How one tweet can ruin your life - Jon Ronson

"This isn't social justice. It's a cathartic alternative."

Full disclosure - I clicked on this video expecting to hear the humorous details of somebody's deserved annihilation. Shame on me I guess. How intoxicating it is to feel as if we are the voice of justice... if only we were more judicious with it.

Marked NSFW due to some rather unsavoury quotations.

Everything in life has a price. Her tweet did not ruin her life it only cost her job. There have been many others who's comments have cost them far more then she has paid.

That's some cold hearted malice right there.

You start pointing out that the victim described "only lost their job", and then you go on with this little link providing the suggestion that she really was guilty of holding to a hate filled ideology.

All this based on a single tweet in which she was actually making fun of those people holding to hate filled ideologies.

Kind of like when you posted:
"Once you learn to profit from racism then BS like this doesn't bother you. In fact you begin to appreciate all the hard free labor that keeps the dividends flowing."

Imagine if you lost your job because a million folks on the internet all took that as straight faced support for profitting off racism and not the obvious jab at it that it is.

Makes me think of the guy who videotaped the woman at the Chick-Fil-A drive thru, figuring he would be lauded as a hero for challenging someone who worked for that company. And it backfired and he became unemployed because of his "principles", which was pretty much what he expected of that woman. And then he played the victim. But he brought it on himself, the woman who tweeted about AIDS in Africa is a whole other story.

Now that everyone has the power to self-publish and broadcast just about anything to the entire world I'm seeing the power that it unleashes in others. I posted a comment on an unsolicited news posting in my FB feed, regarding the Pulitzer Prize picture of the black woman holding out her hands to be handcuffed by the police in riot gear. And everyone in the comment section is going predictably teary-eyed and goose pimply over it, with the usual cliches of iconic, defining, inspiring, uplifting, etc.

And I wrote "don't be so easily manipulated, it's stagey and predictable and Kardashians use this shit to sell sugar water." or something like that. My point being that we have gone from prize-winning pictures of the Viet Nam war (e.g.) to the whole process being co-opted by pop culture, like everything and anything else. Of course I got bombarded with claims of racism and people who pitied my soul. And some were musing on whether to try to track down my employer. I deleted my comment, this world has gotten too fucking weird for me.

Never having to fear financial disruption due to an opinion does afford one a sense of liberty. No company is going to fire your shares and stop sending dividends.

jon's clever attempt to sway public opinion on a fools tweet lines his pockets with book royalties and speaking fees. He's profiting from a special kind of sinister back door racism. It enriches him financially and psychologically with the praises from the suckers who are being told to all go buy his book.

The very thought of being embarrassed or shamed by profiting from racism in a country built by slaves is truly hilarious. No matter if you stand or take a knee all are paying rent or interest.

bcglorfsays...

Focus.

You callously said the victim 'only' lost their job, and then posted a link that can only be read as implying the victim truly is filled with a hateful ideology that they should be repenting of.

I understand that trying to duck, dodge and otherwise change the topic is maybe the best defense you can come up with, but I'm not biting. You may want to consider if you're the one that should give an inch on occasion and not just the 'monsters' you've identified off a single tweet.

Here, they can have a bite of you, you racist monster,
Maybe you won't only lose your job, but can also be berated off the internet, ostracized by friends and neighbors, and publicly shamed for decades, and denied employment, then have others talk about you as if nothing happened and you deserve worse.
As our local racist race baiter, it would be poetic justice.....

Care to rethink?

No surprise. Racist assholes never look at their own behaviours, they just talk crazy shit about the 'others' and pretend they aren't guilty of the exact same crimes.

I, and perhaps others, will do my best to open your eyes to how your suggestions work when used against you instead of those you dehumanize. Your own public comments are far more racist than her single, private joke someone made public, so you should certainly get worse treatment.

Not really, because I'm not an asshole like that...but I do wish you would come to your senses. How would you like it if any black person caught demeaning whites in any minor way loses their job and job prospects for life, like you seem to suggest is proper when reversed....or are you one of those brain dead idiots that think non whites can't be racist?

C-notesays...

So you are implying profiting off racism and racists is racist. That is an interesting opinion.
In america there is a well documented history of what happens to any black person caught demeaning whites in any minor way.

The point
Your head

And I don't believe for a moment that you really are missing the point.

The victim in the video made a tweet that sounds racist, but was meant in a sarcastic manner to be making fun of the stupid things racists say.

Your own comment you've made before is the same thing, saying profiting of racism is AOK, in a sarcastic way to be making fun of the stupid things racists do:
Once you learn to profit from racism then BS like this doesn't bother you. In fact you begin to appreciate all the hard free labor that keeps the dividends flowing

You weren't really advocating for enjoying the free labor and profits of racism, you were making fun of it. The victim you are so quick to run a bus over and see ruined made the same joke as you did, but you still fail to see any irony or double standard in this.

And 1 sentence to refute your off-topic rant. Apparently newtboy and I differ from you in believing the historic racism and prejudices were BAD and should be ended rather than recycled against a new range of victims.

newtboysays...

Yes. Profiting off of racism and racists of a specific race is also racist.

Some history, not how it works today. The guy in your link wasn't fired for saying something about whites he was fired for making political statements (that were intentionally misidentified as anti military, anti flag, anti America) at a work sponsored function, and not what happened to Kapernick either, he may be hired again next year and wasn't fired for a minor private joke about white people. I won't bother with lynching...please. Don't be a bobknight, dragging up red herrings and claiming they're blue fin tuna.

Funny, you bemoan the historical mistreatment of certain people while advocating mistreating others in the same or more harsh way, all based on race, and you probably think you aren't racist....in fact I would bet you feel you are fighting against racism....by sounding racist.
*facepalm

Right. So the virtual lynchmob is ok because... worse things happen to other people?

What.

Dunno. Not sure how suggesting a woman should be raped because she tweeted a poor joke is in any way making up for Emmett Till. I mean, I made sure I was born of white parents in an affluent country so I guess this is a level of privilege that I will never be able to atone for... but if I tweeted at more white woman that I hope they gets aids do you think that would like, help my case at all?

Indeed, yes. It is difficult to tell.

What's not difficult is understanding that fighting racism with racism is both ignorant and stupid.

C-notesaid:

It is difficult to tell if the ignorance is sincere and if stupidity is conscientious.
