Trancecoachjokingly says...Apparently, then, it's "polite" manners to keep an unshaven, unkempt appearance when eating sushi...
(and shaking is only for the men's room)
siftbotsays...Tags for this video have been changed from 'japan, otoro, fatty tuna, scallion, ginger' to 'japan, otoro, fatty tuna, scallion, ginger, sushi' - edited by Grimm
Grimmsays...I've watched a few of these "How to eat sushi" videos and while there are some things that are the same I've seen many that contradict each other. Some say you should use your hand with sushi and rolls and others say rolls only. Some say you are supposed to eat the sushi fish side down so the fish is on your tongue and others don't say this. I've seen some that say you can mix the soy sauce with the wasabi while other say you never do that.
Zawashsays...Gotta relate this to one of the best sifts ever: *related=http://videosift.com/video/Sushi-The-Japanese-Tradition-1

TheFreaksays...I agree. You can have your Burger King your way and if any man in God's Great 'Murica tries to tell you how to eat it then they can go straight to Commie/Socialist Europe, where there's no Constitution that guarantees Freedom!
On the other hand, some things I cook take multiple days to prepare. Sometimes I may not have slept more than a couple hours overnight, tending to the food I just served you. The rubs, marinades, bastes, brines and such may represent years of experimentation. It often requires multiple different cooking methods to prepare one single item.
When I share that food with you, you can smother it in ketchup and salt before you taste it...that's your right. You can also take that food and eat it in the fucking street. I will, in fact, help you to the street. No...really...I insist.
There's assembly line food and there's unique, carefully prepared, food that sometimes represents a lifetime of care and effort. You can show some appreciation for the work that went into the food you're eating or you can be a self centered dick. That's what Freedom is all about.
Not directed at you personally DannyM...just the concept in general.

ChaosEnginesays...Why are people so against learning how to appreciate food or drink?
In many cases with these things, there are decades or even centuries of tradition and experience that have gone into this little rituals that are part of the theatre of food or wine or whiskey.
Besides, especially in the context of a culture that's not your own, disregarding the cultural norms is just rude and ignorant.

entr0pysays...I half agree with both points of view. First of all, doing it your own way is fine, it's not doing it 'wrong' or being rude. So long as you're not talking with your mouth full, you're golden.
But if you see it as time honored suggestions for how to enjoy the experience more; that's both useful and interesting. I'd love it if we could have conversations about how to enjoy food without any snobbery.
But honestly for some people the joy of superiority is most of what they get out of it. For them these rituals are not about the food, it's about identifying the lower class who don't know what the tiny fork is for. Or in this case, when to eat the ginger.
