Henry Rollins - "This Is How I Protest The War"

This is a funny, powerful and sad tale he tells. I'm just going to fail at describing this, so I'll shut up now.

Right Budzos, Lets just give up, seek comfort in food, luxury, political pablem and religion. (never sex!) That is the natural order, not to struggle against the evil that would manipulate us into doing its will. Resistance is futile, peace is an unnatural state, and it is easier to follow than lead.

(edit)Oh......don't forget entertainment, and the joy of feeling superior.

Obscenesimian, I didn't exactly say it was worthless. I said it was "a bit meaningless," not even completely meaningless. He stood up in front of a room full of people and urged them with great panache to "stop killing each other." That's just a bit meaningless if you ask me.

If he affects one person enough for that person to choose not killing over killing, great, but do you really think this is a new message, or even a new approach to hearing this message, to these people? Do you think they'll hear about a couple Americans getting fucked up and spontaneously develop perspective on the insanity of a religious grudge that's been carrying on for centuries? To half of them he's just another American sticking his nose in where it doesn't belong. He probably fueled some anger among the crowd, as you'll notice not everyone is so enthusiastic to ovate him. Maybe more americans, palestinians, and israelis will be killed because he offended someone...

I don't really think that, but I'm sick of Mr Rollins' schtick in any case. Here's a guy with his head way up his own ass. I give him credit for some of his music and writing, but most of his spoken word and public speaking appearances irk the shit out of me.

As for entertainment, I'd bet Henry Rollins capitalized directly on this appearance through a paycheck, and if not, or if he donated his fee, he still benefits long-term from the enlargement of his personal story.

Let me stress, I do think he did a good thing here, with good intentions. My life story pales in comparison to Henry Rollins. Doesn't make this speech especially laudable, nor even particularly articulate.

Peee-ueew. Henry Rollins? C'mon dude, you've been trying the 'angry-yelling-tattooed-observations with a touch of humour' for a _tad_ too long. They weren't good then, and now they're just deparate sounding. "Please pay attention long enough for me to finish this psuedo-intellectual rant so I can pump my arms at the end..." What a wanna-be badboy. Go drive your Hummer with middle-eastern gas to the shooting range that taught you how to fire your collectible .50 cal. Afterwards we'll go get some tattoos! Yeah! How frickin' cool!
He wouldn't last a second in any war.

Not last, obscenesimian, sorry.

I saw him tell this exact story when he was here in Seattle. He's so great with his spoken word. I met him afterwards and he is NIGHT AND DAY when he is onstage vs. off. He's a really great man.

ok. fuck HR.

Yeah, and fuck Gandhi too for spouting that peace shit.

Holy crap, mushroom, what planet are you living on? end fascism, nazism, communism?

How many neo-nazis are there in the world today?
How many people are enslaved by their own or others' governments?
How many dictatorial communist governments are there in the world?
Maybe you think they are alive and well today because we didn't carpet bomb europe completely enough in the 40's? Perhaps the answer is to keep bombing the shit out of all of them? Because just like an abused wife, THEY JUST DON'T SEEM TO GET IT. right?

sheesh - get thee to a library.

btw: I personally think rollins is something of a tool. The best worst thing he ever did was stop making music. His point, though, was exactly the same as Gandhi's. You have a choice. You can sign up to kill people, or you can refuse to kill people. It is not a complicated choice.
