A really well done study about FEZ developer Phil Fish, and celebrity hate in general.
In 2013, Phil Fish canceled work on FEZ 2 and "quit video games" after an extremely public flame-war with a games journalist.
For those who don't know him, Phil Fish is an independent developer featured in the 2012 documentary Indie Game: the Movie, and creator of indie-darling game FEZ, which won several acclaims and was at the forefront of the recent indie-games renaissance.
Phil Fish is surrounded by controversy and has a history of engaging in incendiary flame-wars with journalists, other devs, and especially with random internet trolls, and this has made him a bit of a villain within the small indie games community. This video attempts to deconstruct the complexity of the issues.

sixshotsays...I really wanted to watch the video... but... I just can't. I love the game FEZ for how well designed it was. And I thought I could care less who it was designed by or who thought of the concept.
The biggest problem with Phil Fish is the fact that he shows little restraint or has very poor choice of words when speaking his mind. I am all for being outspoken as long as you do it w/o pissing your playerbase off.
When FEZ was being promoted in various big name conventions (I forgot which), I posted a comment that perhaps it's better to try to finish up the game rather than promoting it and showing it off. Usually when it comes to games and unknown ones, it only takes some good word of mouth to help promote it. People will find out, one way or another. What I get is a rude reply from him.
It's unknown to me as to whether or not Phil is a nice guy or genuinely an asshole all around. But given his response to that one comment I made, I think it's the latter. I don't need the internet news media to promote the notion that Phil Fish is an asshole. All you have to do to know if he's an asshole is to disagree with him on something, no matter how small or how trivial it is.
lucky760says...You should watch the video. You seem to be making a very large presumption that it contains a message that is explicitly contradictory to its actual point.

Jinxsays...I hope I'm never famous. I hear you turn into a complete asshole.
ps. If some internet random told me how to do my job they'd better expect a snarky comment offering suggestions on where they could put their opinion.

articiansays...Just like everyone, he's a mixture of both. He's rubbed me the wrong way a few times, but he's an artist. Really it comes down to how much you can stand from people, and how much good you see out of the bad.

chingalerasays...Wow. So.....maybe I should stop being such an asshole, huh?...If I like, want folks to like, LIKE me?? Fuck THAT shit.
Who's Nickleback?? ...kinna missed the poppy-90s and then the government coop with 9-11 and all, bit fuzzy in the grey areas... GoddAMN!!-Typed this while listening and got a me a dweeb-speaking, 'Phil Fish' headache now
Excellent offering mechadeath, cheers. with some great scotch!
Paybacksays...I still don't see why people have to hate on Nickelback. Record companies have been generating hyped out bands and singers ever since someone invented record companies. For every Beatles and Elvis Presley, there are a couple hundred Monkees and Nickelback.
By and large, people are sheep. They move with the herd. What is Facebook and Twitter other than versions of this cult of popularity? They are both shit "apps", but they make money and are popular.
I bet over half the people who like "indie" music download it illegally instead of supporting their favourite bands. The fact most people support bands like Nickleback and not indies is almost funny in it's irony.
