going to assume this is due to the candle being petroleum-based(as the majority of candles are)

The wick of a candle gives the molten fuel more surface area so it'll evaporate more quickly. The molecules of the liquid have to actually come in contact with air to burn, and this is mostly done by evaporating.

Got this to work a couple times.

Two things:

Had to be VERY close to the candle (within an inch)

and it had to be VERY soon after I blew it out. If it didn't happen after 2 seconds it wasn't going to happen.

Yeah, like Shap said, I've known about this for years, but never seen it done at that distance from the candle. It always works a bit closer though.
