Why is it you have to watch fucking RUSSIAN TV to get straight news these days???

I'd be careful about calling RT "straight news", it's just got a different agenda than domestic news orgs. It reminds me a lot of Al-jazeera English -- it gives a lot of attention to any story that indicates America isn't the utopia it sells itself as around the world.

As far as factual accuracy, they're interviewing a guy from alternet.org -- maybe they're more accurate than the mainstream press, maybe they're not, but it's not like RT has done original reporting here. They've just given a platform to a fringe-y group in the US to say that the US electoral process is deeply corrupt.

I agree on a gut level with the alternet guy in this case, but I think RT giving this guy a platform doesn't mean they're "straight news." If anything, I think they're just in the business of giving a megaphone to anyone who can make a persuasive case that America sucks, or at a minimum that all that talk from Americans about freedom, democracy, rights, equality, and prosperity is just a load of propaganda.

I had feeling this was a fake vid for a bit... its not though is it? I mean, thats pretty messed up if its true... I am not sure, have no idea what going on over that way... but that what I know about the economy, makes me worry that this could be true. anyone clear it up for me please?

Netrunner - I'd much prefer this info come from a mainstream source but I couldn't find it.

That said, the narrative seems - to me - straight-forward and uncontroversial.

-A corporate friendly supreme court opens the floodgates to unlimited, anonymous corporate influence over our democracy.
-The midterms are the most expensive in history by a good margin.
-A corporately funded, rage-based movement, heavy on rhetoric, but light on policy specifics sweeps into office.
-The morning after, corporate tax cuts are at the top of the agenda.

Quid pro ... shut yo mouth ....

I don't see anything to quible with here, fact-wise. If you can find more on this from a more widely known source, you let me know and I'll promote it.

WHAT is up with the 'background' footage, being played when the guest speaks for longer than say 10 seconds, actually having audio?!? He's making good points, or at least adding to the discussion around Citizens United and the most recent election in your country, and then all of a sudden the audio from the random shit in the background almost matches the level that he's speaking at... Very, very distracting.

I mentioned as much to my roommate and the first thing he said was that probably the people in charge of the programming are precisely the people this guest is speaking out against, though I haven't seen much recent programming from RT. Perhaps all of their interviews have this 'screen-saver' function?

I found it very annoying, though it's not nearly as annoying (or scary) as having my neighbour to the South be actually wholly owned by corporate interests (rather than just mostly owned...) Now that's truly chilling.

Interesting that the interviewee said that moving these corporate donations out into the open would be a first step into fixing some of the damage since buying elections is still something that we wouldn't do in the public eye -- I doubt that taboo is strong enough to limit things much at all. Hell, Fox News would probably be proud to hold a fundraiser and publicly disclose / brag about how much they raked in for republican / T.P. candidate X.

I'm rather disgusted that this has come to pass. The only way the "lame duck" legislative branch could even make headway towards redeeming itself would be to pass through *far* more drastic campaign finance reforms AND institute single-term limits for both the senate and house. I don't trust anyone being fed massive sums of money by corporations for more than a single term.

@dystopianfuturetoday, I think that what's being said here is true also, but that's because it's a logical inference from the facts that no one's really disputing, not because Russia Today is so credible I need not question anything they say.

For example, we recently had this shoot up the charts, where RT had on a propagandist from Reason to basically say that Prop 19 is going to fail because Obama's DOJ is engaging in "voter intimidation" because it truthfully stated that states don't have the power to nullify federal law.

As for better sources on the campaign finance problem, here's a number of articles in mainstream press to paint the picture:

Washington Post - Interest-group spending for midterm up fivefold from 2006; many sources secret
The Economist - Ignore that $800,000 behind the curtain
The New York Times - Top Corporations Aid U.S. Chamber of Commerce Campaign
The New York Times - John Roberts's America
NPR - 'Independent' Groups Behind Ads Not So Independent

So it's more than a gut feeling on my part that this is true, but again, that's because a) it's a reasonable deduction from the facts, and b) lots of people I respect, both inside mainstream press and outside it are saying the same thing.

But the fact that Russia Today decided to say it too doesn't mean they are some sort of unbiased source. On the contrary, I believe they're only giving it airtime because their bias drives them to promote stories like this.

Interesting, tell me please who you voted for this week? If you think the democratic party hasn't been bought and sold by corporations a hundred times over, you are quite delusional indeed...

Let me tell you as an insider, we couldn't be more amused that the internet is filled with the inane babblings of people who think corporations care whether a "democrat" or "republican" is in power. We could care less who you vote for, as long as you believe it makes a difference. Humans are bought and sold as easy as livestock. We don't need to buy your party, when we can buy you. We control how you spend your time, what you see and hear, what you think you know about the world, even what you want and hope for in life. We control what you eat when you're hungry, what you drink when your thirsty, what you brush your teeth with before you go to bed at night. Your life is nothing but a series of false choices. Coke or Pepsi. You really think it makes a difference to us? You have been helplessly brainwashed. You are nothing but one of millions; silent, droning workers who line our pockets and support our lifestyle.

Thanks for voting!

Great monologue.

Assuming you are truly an insider, and not just some confused kid trying to emulate an archetypal corporate villain, then why have you spent so much time on this site, rambling inanely about politics? Why are you so adamant about pushing RC cola on Coke and Pepsi fans if it's all the same, corruptible shit?

I've been trying for years to prove to blankfist that all of that free market talk was just a ruse to morally justify economic elitism. Could you confirm to him that this is the case? If you do, I promise to continue to always use the kind of toothpaste you want me to use (Why Aquafresh?). Anyway, I think you might have helped my side of the argument here today. Thank you for that.

BTW, who did you vote for?

Fucking ridiculous. When 3/4 of the nation can oppose a constitutional amendment, and yet it still passes, that's proof enough that this government is no longer "of the people, for the people."

THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!!!!11!1

You don't have to prove anything. I know what we have today is not a free market but crony capitalism wrapped in free market rhetoric, and that's the way the bankers and corporatists prefer it.
