Elvis Costello: Shipbuilding
"Is it worth it?"
no.
====
frm songfacts.com:
Elvis has said in interviews that this was written from the perspective of workers in British shipbuilding seaports during the buildup to England's war with Argentina over the Falkland Islands in 1982, an event that then-prime minister Margaret Thatcher seized (as most politicians would) in order to use the cacophony of nationalistic fervor to drown out the groaning sounds of a crumbling economy.
The song is set in a region that's economically depressed, one where essentials like "a new winter coat for the wife" is hard to come by. But there's a "rumour" that the local shipyard will soon have work, building ships for a war. The townspeople want to be happy that they will soon have jobs, but it is at the expense of their own boys who must go fight the war.
Chet Baker plays the mournful, lonely trumpet solo on this ballad. It is rumored to be Baker's last recorded performance.
Do you watch less TV because of online videos? (Sift Talk Post)
Yup. People look at me like I'm nuts, when I tell them I don't have cable or even an antenna. And the only shows I watch are TDS and CR, predictably. And then I bittorent them. So zero tv.
A few years ago I received an invitation to become part of the Nielsen households. The questionnaire they sent did not even have this as an option. I had to write my answers by hand, there was no checkbox for "I don't watch tv" or even "Zero to 5 hours" or something inclusive like that.
I watch more tv now than I have in many years, but none of it is through the primary tv channels (ie, cable, broadcast)
Lightning Doodle Project
think of it as a doodle on scrap paper. it's still a cool doodle. (and yet, it's just a doodle. -- mark my words, we haven't seen the last of this type of homegrown animation.)
Once Upon a Time in the West, opening scene
Great movie. Great opening scene. Dir. Sergio Leone
Another great clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08Az1xP2jDY
I did not post it in the sift queue because it should be considered as part of the whole. In this scene, an entire homesteading family is wiped out on the day the (widowed) father is due to meet and marry his mail-order bride. Henry Fonda as Frank, the truly evil sadistic bad-guy, is stunning. I believe that he has been horribly miscast for most of his career, as a wholesome-type. He's a much better bastard.

I know the feeling, ant. We may be the vanguard of the next next wave.
The post-video era. Tho, I don't think the term "video" will last much longer, do you? I'm not sure what will replace it, but it's not quite the right word any more.
What term will replace "video"? Is there any term currently being used that works better? Anyone?

Amazingly, it seems (some) birds are much more intelligent than we give them credit for. African Gray Parrots are supposedly the most intelligent, and I know we have a clip in the sift somewhere of "Einstein" the parrot, going through a circus act on a game-show, answering questions from its trainer.
Another documented high-vocab parrot is N'kisi. Check out this link to an audio recording of one of N'kisi's speech sessions. It could be a total fake, but a google search will show that N'kisi is well-documented. Adding to my initial suspicion was the fact that Aimee Morgana, N'kisi's trainer, seems kinda kooky. http://www.sheldrake.org/nkisi/nkisi1_text.html
Sincere thanks given during a graduation ceremony!!
truly a LOL moment

Now, now, be nice farhad. I've been shooting cool clips Jeff's way since the the early days (that is, a few months ago) -- plenty to go around. Now, rather than send an email to Jeff (Mr. Throwawayyourtv) when I see an appropriate vid, I can just post to the site. I love both of my children, in slightly different ways but exactly equal portions.
I will be scarcer in the near future, however. Not due to Throw...tv, but because I'm moving soon, which will occupy much of my time. From SF, CA to Cottonwood, AZ - so it's a big uprooting sort of move. If any sifters are in that area of AZ, give me a shout (my email addy is in the profile).
Go for it, Ant. I shan't give up my tiara if I can help it. But if you're gonna snatch it, the time (to try) is near.
