Top Ten Summer Box Office Bombs 2013
The information in this video is deceptively incomplete. Modern major-release movies are enormously expensive to make and a big part of their profit calculation includes the worldwide market. In fact, country-specific versions of these films are often released in overseas markets, sometimes with new characters/scenes added just for them.
So while it's perhaps culturally interesting to see whether a particular flick was popular with Americans, the economic side of the movie business cares not.
It's almost quaint that someone would report only U.S. box office totals today - particularly when using that data to call a film a bomb. Here's the real bottom line for these "bombs" (total worldwide grosses as of 9/2013 - and counting):
After Earth $243m ($130m budget)
The Lone Ranger $243m ($215m budget)
Elysium $213m ($115m budget)
Turbo $157m ($135m budget)
Red 2 $120m ($ 84m budget)
White House Down $153m ($150m budget)
Heck, even Mortal Instruments ($66.6m, $60m budget) and The Internship ($83m, $58m budget) have made millions.
These movies are almost all profitmakers - often enormously so. Just, you know, not as much as we were hyped to believe in the States.
(That said - R.I.P.D. was actually a bomb! The only real one here, I'd say. But I think the film companies will survive.)
Man With No Short-term Memory
Saw this documentary ages ago... the wife lives in another city now, and has a new family, etc. But she still visits him semi-regularly, and (of course) he is none the wiser.
What's enormously sad is that - if I remember the documentary correctly (no pun intended!) - is that every time she re-enters the room, it feels to him like she's been gone FOREVER (even if it's only been a few minutes). Hence his intense emotional reaction every time they "reunite." So imagine how it must feel to him when she's been gone for a week (or more).
What kills me is when his wife leaves the room and comes back. That right there, that's real love. For her to be able to cope with what's going on...
MSNBC PSA - All Your Kids Are Belong to Us
Yes it's semantics really. If she had said the following instead, I don't think this would have been posted here:
We've got to kind of break through the idea that parents and families are only ever responsible for their own kids alone, and recognize that kids will best thrive when the whole community takes greater responsibility for their well-being.
Some people are very sensitive to the implied political meanings of the words "public" vs. "private". But that said... it seems pretty clear to me that the above is what she means.
Of course, regardless of how it's stated, some may still find this idea dangerous and radical .
Loki introduces Thor 2 footage
He's actually really great in that role... When do we get a Loki movie!
Weird, Raunchy Old Music Video from the 50's
Sift of the day! Take that Monkees, "inventors of the music video" my hat!
Katy Perry-Teenage Dream(Death Metal Version)
Yeah, that's lip-synching for sure. Anyone with half a brain can tell who the actual vocalist is.... cookie monster, of course.
Moby Grape -- It's A Beautiful Day Today
Thanks for posting.... a great one, long forgotten too. I wish there was a radio station that only played songs like this - an alternate reality of classic rock "hits" that should have been huge (but weren't).
Best Birthday Surprise Ever!!
You could totally be right VoodooV.
And if that's the case, this is the sort of thing that might increase the chances of that happening. The bullied often become bullies - as they try to prove they aren't the weak/different ones.
This video makes fun of an 11 year old kid, without his consent, in arguably a pretty cruel way. That's the definition of bullying, online or otherwise, While we laugh virally at his expense. Not cool, I say.
why do you think he'll get bullied? if anything, I would think he would fall into the "future bully" camp
Best Birthday Surprise Ever!!
Yeah it's funny and all. Sort of.
I just watched the original. The kid is actually delighted at getting a giant "monster truck" poster. You know, the kind of oversized car crusher with huge wheels that they show off at county fair tractor pulls.
I have kids this age. And looking at this kid - buzz cut, track pants, burly dad with a Steelers jersey - I can't help but cringe when I think what his Monday morning will be like at his likely rural U.S. public middle school. If I had to make an educated guess, he's going to get bullied. For weeks.
So down vote for me. De-viral this one. And it's not that funny anyway.
Why the moon hoax would have been impossible
Wonderful... and lest it's not obvious, debunking moon truthers is merely the example he's using to make a larger point. And that point is more easily made *because* he picked something we (mostly!) all agree on - that the moon shot was real, and moon truthers are freakin' nuts.
Not that there are any people like that today. Right )?
Big Bird's Transmutation into Terence McKenna
And! His Big Bird voice speaks with the cadence/phrasing of Mr. Rogers!
Trippy indeed
Widowspeak "In The Pines" Live - Sideshow Alley
Me too! I hope they are aware of their influences
Chet Baker Talks Jazz with Flea
Nice sift... just wanted to say the description mentions Flea as the Chili Pepper's frontman. Not true - he's the bass player (flamboyant he is, but he's not the frontman).
The Artist Formelly Known As Cat Stevens - Don't Wear Fear
The title of this song is actually "Don't Be Shy" (not "Don't Wear Fear"). It was originally on the soundtrack of the early '70s flick Harold and Maude.
Disney buy Lucasfilm for $4.05bn. Star Wars Ep. 7 in 2015.
>> ^VoodooV:
Disney owns Marvel AND Lucasfilm.
fuck....
Not just Marvel and Lucasfilm! They also own Pixar. And ESPN. And not to mention Hyperion (they're known for something called "books"). And oh almost forgot - something called ABC! And a big chunk of Hulu.
And let's not leave out - both the Muppets AND the Might Morphin' Power Rangers! Sheesh... why not sell them DC, Star Trek and Harry Potter and just be done with it already.
