Why I Left the Left

Horribly Slow Murderer with the Extremely Inefficient Weapon

Trout says...

You should watch the recent horror movie, "It Follows"... excellent serious treatment of this basic idea (sans spoon .

JustSaying said:

And now imagine Charlie Brooker gives this idea the same treatment he gave the pig-fucking episode of Black Mirror. Totally ridiculous idea played completely straight.
I'd watch that movie.

Jet powered flying motorcycle from the film MegaForce (1982)

Trout says...

I (cough) saw this in 1982. In the theater, first run, with my step-brother. I had blocked that out!

Even then, we immediately knew it was completely, indescribably awful. Yet also sort of awesome. A very confusing feeling at the time!

Whiter Shade of Pale - Procol Harum

Trout says...

Ah, one of the all-time great singles of the rock era. So mature, yet it was their first single. I envy those hearing this for the first time (and they're just kids in this video... kids!). One of Paul McCartney's favorite songs:

McCartney: "It's got to be "A Whiter Shade of Pale." The first time I ever heard it was the night I met Linda. We met at the Bag O' Nails, and we went on to the Speakeasy, and they played the record of it there. We were with Keith Moon of the Who and Eric Burdon of the Animals, and we were all trying to figure out who it was. We all thought it must be Stevie Winwood, but it turned out to be Procol Harum. We just said, 'This is the best song ever, man.'"

Fleetwood Mac - Albatross - Live at the BBC

Trout says...

It's a fake-a-long to the studio version... but oh so beautiful! I melt slowly everytime I hear this. The inspiration to The Beatles' Sun King, btw.

The Making of Raiders of the Lost Ark:A 1981 PBS Documentary

Trout says...

Great sift. Who needs DVD extras!

(Aside: I almost wish they never made the sequels... although I enjoyed some of them, the first movie was f-l-a-w-l-e-s-s. Imagine its reputation today if they'd only made the one.)

Midnight Special - 1974 - Golden Earring - Radar Love - Live

Trout says...

Just like that recently posted version of Heart's Magic Man, this is another live vocal over a studio recording ... that is, the singer is singin' but the band is fakin' it. Check out the rubber puck on the snare drum - always a dead give away . Still cool though!

Heart - Magic Man Live

Trout says...

Ah, interesting... very different & spirited vocal from Ann Wilson. Cool stuff. And yet - although Ann Wilson is singing live - the rest of the band is faking along to a pre-recorded backing track. Not uncommon in those days for TV guest spots. (And, of course, de rigueur along with "vocal support track" for any aspiring ingenue pop star these days.)

Also, check out Luke Skywalker, faking it on lead guitar! Complete with, uh, some sort of concealed light saber weapon...

How our society fails its men and boys -- the trailer

Trout says...

I'm a father, and this rings all too true. Already with my son in middle school, I see many of the boys withdrawing from genuine bonding into carefully crafted fronts and defensive posturing. It's alarming as a dad, but sadly not a surprise. I remember this transition all too well - not much has changed on this topic since I was a kid in the '70s and '80s.

But we can teach emotional sensitivity to our boys - and still demonstrate real masculinity (and strength). Like most dads, I've taught my son that strength of character often means facing fear head-on. Yes, being strong.

But does that mean to just "man up" and act tough? No. Everyday, the single greatest thing most men are afraid of is sharing their true feelings (and not just irritation or rage). For a lot of men, it gets to the point where they themselves don't know what they're feeling anymore - let alone have the ability to tell anyone else.

I've taught my son that real bravery is facing that fear. Express your feelings to someone you trust regularly. Share them with friends, and (especially) reach out for help when you're feeling sad/down. Overcome the fear that buries your inner world, and you're on your way to becoming a real man - the kind of man that's not afraid of the very thing most men cower and retreat from.

The Rolling Stones-Angie

Trout says...

Not to nitpick, but this really shouldn't be tagged as Live Music.

Jagger is lip-synching (nicely), Mick Taylor is fake playing Nicky Hopkins' awesome piano part, and Keith Richards isn't even onstage with the rest of the band (he appears in just a few cutaways). And, of course, there's no audience.

This is one of the promo videos that the Stones shot for the '73 single version of Angie (which is the version of the song we're hearing). Still a really cool video, and nice to have on the Sift.

Stevie Ray Vaughan's Roadie is the Epitome of a Professional

Trout says...

Yep, and notice Stevie's little head nod just before the replacement guitar arrives, right on time (in the vocal break).

And afterwards, here's what we don't see (but is surely happening backstage) - the roadie rushing to restring and quickly tune-up Stevie's favorite guitar.

QUARK Episode 1 from 1979

Trout says...

Wikipedia says this pilot aired in May of 1977, not 1979 (show was cancelled in '78)..... also the show was created by Buck Henry of Get Smart (and The Graduate) fame! Awesome find.

World's First 3D Printed Metal Gun

Patty Griffin and Robert Plant - "Ohio"

Freddy Mercury is alive and well

Trout says...

Yeah, I mean like... what? Swarthy guy with a mustache. Doesn't sound like Freddie Mercury. Doesn't move like Freddie Mercury. Music is vastly different. Vague physical resemblance, but nothing else.
