Girl living full, happy life with only half her brain!

LittleRed says...

Well "Girl living with only half her brain!" sounds a little more exciting than "Brain Plasticity."

I think this is absolutely fascinating. It likely has to do with the fact she was so young when the surgery was performed, but that the brain completely rewired itself so she can really do anything - it looks like one of the clips it showed of her, she was in a dance class of some sort. And they managed not to slice through the corpus callosum? That takes some serious skill. It's not like it's just floating there in the middle with nothing around it. There's really not much definition until you've already cut through into the ventricles.

I'm just so excited and astonished I can't even formulate proper sentences. I never would've imagined this possible.

The Effects of Drugs On the Brain

Announcing the "Mind and Brain" Channel (Brain Talk Post)

LittleRed says...

Woooooooooooo! Finally! A new channel that's useful!

I love it. Love it, love it, love it. And when I actually get around to sifting videos, I'll be your biggest fan. Or... something.

Exclusive Rachel Maddow Interview w/ Obama - Oct 30, 2008

Believe me sirex, the intelligent ones over here have been saying the same thing. Seems like the entire Republican base will absolutely shut their brains off at the first mention that the U.S. isn't perfect.

Uh, no, actually. Republicans who still love Bush, maybe. Being Republican doesn't exempt one from being intelligent. There are plenty of us who are well educated and realize our nation isn't perfect. But way to make an incorrect blanket statement there.

The Mental Toll On The Troops In Iraq

LittleRed says...

3+ years after his deployment, and I'm still getting punched in the jaw or kicked in the back at night because of nightmares. It may be treatable during the daytime, but nightmares don't go away. Sleep aids reduce dreaming significantly, but they can't completely shut it off.

Also, don't think for a second that half the guys over there that aren't medicated are fine, either - particularly if it's not their first deployment. One of the symptoms of PTSD is survivor guilt - for many, that means volunteering to go back.

Target Women: Cleaning

LittleRed says...

>> ^MarineGunrock:
Yeah, she makes some good points, but isn't it kind of ridiculous to have your logo screen have items that are ONLY for women, like tampons, bikinis, hair care products, and women's deoderant?

Uh... the show is called "Target Women." Look at the related videos. She reviews birth control and wedding tv shows. I don't imagine she has a very large male audience. If the show is for women, why not have products geared toward women?

Joe McCain calls 911 to complain about traffic

LittleRed says...

>> ^bamdrew:
dial 411, or free 1-800-GOOG-411 to get a local police department number while on the road

In Anchorage, I know that absolutely doesn't work. I use GOOG-411 for everything, so when I called to report that several lights were out on a major road in town with no maintenance crews around, no power outage, and no other obvious problem, I was met with at least 12 different numbers for the PD. When I went through the addresses and picked the one I thought was best, I got their fax number.

On the other hand, why in the world is this actually news? There are plenty of asshats that call 911 all the time for various stupid reasons. None of them have made the news, and very, very few of them made the "Top 10 911 calls of this year" list that various networks have. Just because the McCains share parents doesn't make this anything special.

Heroin Addicts Speak

LittleRed says...

We had a nurse come in to one of my classes last week. One of the things she said - Ladies: if you have ever used heroin, make sure you tell your doctor when you're pregnant. There is a drug they use during labor that can cause a psychotic episode when it interacts with the residual heroin in your fat cells, even if you only used heroin once, or it was 15 years ago.

She had a patient who had used heroin 10 years prior. They gave her two doses of the medication - one when she first went into labor, and one when she was 8 cm dilated. The woman was standing on her bed, screaming at the doctor and the nurses, and bearing down at the same time. Not exactly the safest environment for your baby to be born.

From the Phoenix area, along for the ride.

I know the Billiards place is 21+ - they mention it on the front page. I assumed the Red Lion was too, since they call themselves a "Beer Garden," and they advertise a Happy Hour. If it's all ages, it'll work.

EDIT: Nevermind; I called. They're a "family restaurant" until 10PM.

Southern California Sift-Up? (Sift Talk Post)

LittleRed says...

What about a restaurant instead of a bar? I'm not 21 until next summer, and if I'm going to be stuck in a car for 6 hours, I'd like to be able to grab something to eat somewhere I'll actually be allowed in.
