The Hell Hole - Dropping Maltovs into a DEEP Hole

Ickster says...

Ummm, after thoughtlessly upvoting your comment, I followed the link you posted and it's definitely not the place they are at. According to the YT description on the video, it's an abandoned mine shaft somewhere in the western US, not in West Virginia.

They still don't seem like my kind of people, but not as bad as your comment makes them out to be.

Someone should drop these redneck fucks down there.

FizzBuzz : A simple test when hiring programmers/coders

Ickster says...

Ha! I often ask FizzBuzz in interviews if I have a hint that someone's blowing smoke. Often, they'll whiteboard a solution which is a giveaway that they've rehearsed this one (going straight to mod 15 instead of mucking around with 3 and 5 first), but that's no big deal. Where people usually utterly fail is when I ask them how they'd test it.

The vast majority of people end up saying that they'd run it and examine the output or something stupid; relatively few go straight to a unit test, and of those that do, even fewer immediately see that they have to refactor the simple solution to separate application from logic from presentation.

ChaosEngine said:

You want to impress me? Start out by writing a test that verifies the output. I don't care if it works, I want to know you can PROVE it works. While you're at it, if I see a console.log or a printf or a cout or any kind of output in your algorithm (unless it's just there for debugging)... instant fail. Learn to separate presentation from logic.

I do not support a livable wage

By the higher spending brought about by the other workers who were making a relative fortune? It's really not that hard to understand that the economy was helped a lot more by the workers having money to spend than it would've been by Ford being a multiple or two richer than he became.

Ford had what 2000 - 10,000 employees. OK they got better wages.

How did all the other 100 000 people afford the car on lower wages?

I love the pointless rationalization by the guy near the end. So husbands should love their wives unconditionally? Presumably because their wives are silent and submissive, right? How does the former cancel out the latter?

Lots of helicopters have that capability. I have some book about helicopters from the 80s that has a publicity shot of a pair Sea Stallions or some such refueling in flight.

A.I. Is Progressing Faster Than You Think

Ickster says...

For the time being, I don't think that's a concern; with all of the incredible progress being shown in using neural networks to replicate (and yes, improve on) human skills, I'm not aware of any real advances in any field related to giving AI any sort of actual will.

What's more concerning to me is how this sort of technology will be put to use to categorize and control people. I'm not talking about shadowy cabals, or even evil corporations--I'm talking about the unintentional consequences of being able to accurately reduce people to a set of metrics and predictable behaviors, and how that may push culture to a bland algorithmic mush rather than the chaotic but vibrant human mess it's always been. Time will tell, I guess.

ChaosEngine said:

That is really cool and very scary.

What are the chances of us being able to control an AI? Next to zero, IMO.

Trigger Happy Cop Attacks Private Investigator

Ickster says...

You said you hate that cops are untrained and that the cop acted improperly. The rest of your comment is suggesting that his actions were possibly justified. What exactly is your point?

MaxWilder said:

The scariest part to me is that you can read my whole comment and think I'm defending the cop.

What I'm talking about is things that happen because a cop is poorly trained or undertrained, and I said that several times.

But go ahead and pull a couple phrases out of context if you get off that way.
