FOX NEWS: Obama's mention of nonbelievers "offensive"

Flood says...

There Fox goes again, showing its true colors. The caption for Obama's speech is "Addresses Muslims, Atheists in speech". Christians, Jews, and Hindus were also addressed by the speech, so why the selective parsing?

Obama U-turns for Raytheon

Flood says...

So per Obama's new rules he shouldn't hire William Lynn as deputy defense secretary because he lobbied in the defense industry within the past two years. This makes sense because William Lynn could favor his previous employer (Raytheon) during his work as deputy defense secretary and then as soon as his job is done he could potentially go back to Raytheon and presumably be "rewarded" with a much higher salary. The point of the two years is to help safe guard against that type of behavior, because presumably one would have to work somewhere else during that two year period.

So how does this waiver thing work? Who approves it? I don't mind exceptions to rules like this so long as there are checks and balances in place.

If it's the case that Obama is just allowed to make an exception to his own rule without any third party approval, that would definitely lower my opinion of him.

Glenn Beck Tries to Scare Atheist Children

Flood says...

If one were to believe that a moment of silence is not about prayer, then it is reasonable to conclude that one would not bring prayer into the discussion, as it would be irrelevant and off topic.

If one were to believe that a moment of silence is about prayer, then it is reasonable to conclude that since school sanctioned prayer time is not allowed in public schools then it follows that a school sanctioned moment of silence should also not be allowed in public schools.

In case of Glenn Beck, the only conclusion that can be reached is that he does not adhere to logic and reason in his diatribe. Despite this, it is still likely the case that he has a good reason to be unreasonable: he gets paid well for it.

In other words, the real losers are the unreasonable people who nod at what he says, because they gain nothing from it; they have no reason to be unreasonable. So tell me BillOrielly, what is your reason?

The common factor here is that the subjects are unable to distinguish between literary works of fiction and literary works of non-fiction. In regards to both books mentioned, the subjects appear to view both books as works of non-fiction.

- Video implies that Gitmo may be responsible for creating one or more terrorists.
- QM watchs video and takes this implication to a rediculous extreme: all terrorists were created by Gitmo.
- Random web surfer comes across QM's comment and wonders if it was just a failed attempt at humor by QM, or if QM is mentally challenged.

Obama Signs Order Closing Guantanamo

Flood says...

No one is debating the dangers of a suicidal, homicidal enemy. It's quite obviously a very dangerous world and the previous administration has a terrible track record of compromising morals and human rights in the name of protecting America.

Guantanmo is a symbol that represents a moment of weakness for our country. We lowered our standards for what is right, in the name of combating these enemies; that's a victory for our enemies, not for us.

quantumushroom,

Weakness was exactly the message we sent to them when our previous administration broke our country's own rules.

Doing what is wrong, but easy, is weakness.
Doing what is right, but hard, is strength.

Great Advice to Quit Smoking (BBC Horizon)

Flood says...

Coming back to this a little late, but here's my answer for you spoco2.

Why I smoke? Other than the physical satisfaction (the stimulating effects as well as the appetite suppression), I'd say the main reason I smoke is because I do some of my best thinking during my smoking ritual, which always involves having to go outside.

I quit once for 6 months due to a health issue, but it turned out the issue was due to my allergies and not the smoking. I made the choice to go back to smoking because I never found a substitute for the ritual. I tried going on short walks, meditating, but I couldn't find anything to substitute the critical thinking I could accomplish during a single smoke. There is just something about that combination of removing distractions I can't find a substitute for.

Purely psychological addiction, I know. I don't feel like I smoke enough to be physically addicted (half a pack of lights a day).

FOX's Wallace: Is Obama Really Prez After Bobbled Oath?

Flood says...

Most people can recognize it as the tasteless humor that it is. Unfortunately, it's such a bad joke, especially with the way he prattles on about the idea of it going in front of the supreme court, that there are many people that won't recognize it as a joke at all.

Leave the comedy to the comedians.
