Intervention with a Video Game Addict

Flood says...

What a slap in the face from all his friends and family. I would have shoved their ultimatum up their asses and the last they would have ever seen of me would have been my middle finger as I walked out the door.

Smoke Waterfall

Flood says...

Very interesting trick. I'm stumped to explain it. Anyone know about the physics at work here?

Every idea I've come up with so far has a flaw in it. Is the chamber filled with some type of gas that is significantly less dense than the smoke? Or perhaps this is a weird vacuum type effect?

Legalization: Yes We Can

Flood says...

To even take into consideration the law enforcement employees that would lose their jobs if pot were to be legalized is ridiculous in my opinion.

"I'm sorry, you have to go to jail for growing pot because we wouldn't want to have to fire Bob over there."

Legalization: Yes We Can

Flood says...

Well said notarobot.

I think the biggest hurdle to legalization would be finding the right answer to the question of what we do with all the prisoners who would not have been imprisoned under the revised laws. Would they be released? Or would they remain in jail since they still broke the law at the time of their crime?

Ron Paul: "We are doing what Osama Bin Laden wanted"

Flood says...

Man, every time Ron Paul opens his mouth I can't help but...

...nod my head in agreement. Seems like a very reasonable guy and overall he presents himself well. I'd have voted for him if he was listed on my state's ballet.

Nora O'Donnell Trips up Kevin McCarthy on Stimulus

Flood says...

>> ^NetRunner:
I suppose if you want to split hairs, I mischaracterized it slightly; she doesn't say people keeping their money creates a stagnant economy, instead she says people keeping their money won't help correct a stagnant economy (or "stimulate" the economy). That seems like a semantic quibble though.

Are we watching the same video? I don't see anything even closely like that.

0:00 - "So you believe that tax cuts are stimulus?"
0:10 - "And how do tax cuts; and Congressman, how do tax cuts create jobs?
0:45 - "Really!? I'd have thought you'd have to hire someone to put the new sod down on the nation mall. I mean, just to play Devils Advocate doing alot of those projects you have to... [interupted]"
1:00 - "On no I thought you said you want the small business to spend that money to hire more people I thought thats what you just said. That is not keeping it in their pocket. You're not trying to pad the pockets of small business are you?"
1:17 - *Obnoxious Laugh* "Why that doesn't make any sense to me but anyways."

So perhaps you can see how I am confused.

I find the video funny not because she questions of the idea of tax cuts stimulating the economy, because I question that myself. I find the video funny because I see a lady who can't even follow the guy's point. I don't see a woman who is disagreeing with a point so much as a woman who confuses the metaphor of tax cuts giving people more money with a metaphor for people not spending money. After her statement at around the 1:00 mark, the guy tries to clarify but she just laughs and says that she doesn't get it.

Perhaps it is a political Rorschach test, because all I see is a lady who comes off as an obnoxious, clueless, twit while the guy was trying to politely explain the theory behind the idea of tax cuts as economic stimulus.

(INSANELY) Awesome New Desktop GUI

Flood says...

I'm not a fan of the idea of the spoken word being a primary input device. It doesn't make most tasks any easier.

Now, voice recognition combined with some rudimentary AI (Confabulation Theory type stuff) that allowed the computer to understand context could definitely help augment the experience. But I'm not going to play a computer game or surf the web using that technology. "Scroll down. Scroll down. Click Reply."

BCIs (Brain Computer Interfaces) is where the real research energy needs to be directed.

Obama U-turns for Raytheon

Flood says...

QM has a good point about Timothy Geithner, what a horrible choice. Never did like Obama's economic strategy, then again I didn't like Bush's or McCain's either. But I suppose I'm pretty radical when it comes to my own ideas of economic policy.

Nora O'Donnell Trips up Kevin McCarthy on Stimulus

Flood says...

I understand that NetRunner.

But the news lady is clearly confused. She says "I thought you said you wanted people to spend that money ... that's not keeping it in their pocket."

The guys trying to describe how a tax cut gives people more spending power. He says "It goes faster into an individual's pocket." to imply that it becomes theirs to spend how they like. I thought it was obvious. Maybe it wasn't.

One last thing. No where in the vid does the lady make the point that people keeping their money is what creates a stagnant economy. It's not a bad point (though not 100% accurate, it's people not spending their money that creates a stagnant economy), its just that she doesn't make it. It is also an entirely separate issue from whether or not the government should be allowed to spend it for people.

FOX NEWS: Obama's mention of nonbelievers "offensive"

Flood says...

Sigh, I suppose I will have to spell it out for you.

I'm not outraged. What in my comment implied that I was upset in any way?

I don't post any vids, I just comment on them. So I cannot help it if the number Fox News vids is out of proportion. If there is one theme that the majority of my posts take on the Sift, I'd probably generalize it as I "carp" at any vid that conveys an unreasonable message about a topic I have interest in.

Some reports and editorials are obviously slanted to the left or right, and while I'd prefer it to be objective unless done for comedic effect, that is not the true colors I alluded to in my original post. What I'm alluding to is that they have a bias against Muslims and Atheists, which is consistent with other content I have seen come from the Fox News Network.

I too saw this a while back. I like that people are exploring new ideas but I personally wouldn't use it. Right now I barely use my desktop. It is just the blank slate that I start with.

What I think I'd like as far as desktop enhancements is something similar to what Google has done with their web browser Chrome. When I launch Chrome, the start page is primarily filled with a 3 by 3 grid of the most commonly visit websites, which is maintained and updated automatically by the browser. This gives me quick, and easy access that covers about 80% of my web surfing habits. For a desktop, this grid could be populated with my most used programs.

I'm not looking for spiffy visual effects or cool ways to organize things on my desktop. I use Windows Explorer for organizing my files. What I'm looking for in desktop enhancements is for the desktop to be smarter about organizing the access points to my most commonly used applications and files without me having to do a bunch of manual work to get the same effect.
