G. Greenwald's testimony and Q&A before European Parliament

CreamK says...

Install HTTPS everywhere (was hesitant at first but it works really fine now). It makes NSA SIGINT hate you cause they got most likely harmless, useless info in encrypted form stored in their vault.. We can never fill up their space individually. Encryption is the only tool to at least cause resistance at individual level. So far, in the next 5 years the issue needs to be addressed globally (creating even better encryption methods is one answer, endless cat&mouse game played in mathematics) or nations will start to separate and control their own net...which is a huge step backwards, wiping 20 years of internet freedom in it's wake and doesn't address the issue in personal level.. Most likely such intranets are very very heavily controlled and monitored.. goodbye freedom.

Encryption is the first step and one that offers some personal privacy, next is to contact to every page you visit daily to request https if it isn't available (or works poorly).

Basically, using end-to-end encryption everywhere you can is the only thing the majority of us can do who don't live in US. Even then the major hubs (google, facebook etc) are not safe but at least lets make them go physically to each and every server farm to install signal splitters and backdoors. And Google and Facebook store your data anyway by default, that's how they work. But FB won't come knocking on your door in the middle of the night.

Those can vote in US, we are looking at you, why do we need to even think about this? Use your vote wisely. Rebel if needed. If this does not change, rest of the world WILL take measures to stop traffic going in thru US unnecessarily.

How to Make a Swedish Torch

CreamK says...

Called Jätkän Kynttilä (loose transl. Redneck Candle) in Finland.. Never heard of Swedish Torch.

The other great fire for outdoors is Rakovalkea (white crack, yeah it's double entendre), it consists of 2 large logs and the fire is set between them. It'll warm up one camp for a whole Finnish winter night, guaranteed. Same principle, restricted burn.

The scariest talk about the NSA as of yet - it's bad, people

CreamK says...

This started long before 9/11, that attack just "created a threat" where every congressman was willing to hand out every right that people had accumulated to that day. NSA tried to stop 128bit encryption back in the 90s when the first rumors started circulating in tech community. Encryption was seen as a "threat" to national security. Sound familiar? 9/11 gave NSA the money to do what they were after, at the time they wanted it the most. I've known most about their goals for 15 years, just never thought it was going to be this bad so soon...

NSA used the basic principle of internet, which is trust between nodes to route data from A to B in the most efficient manner possible. In the future, this means that the open architecture has to be stripped in favor of trusted, fixed nodes. That means the end of net neutrality. It also means congestions, traffic jams, huge blackouts when regional nodes go out. And it's the end of freedom in the surface web and the absolute end of deep web.

We are screwed unless this system is taken out NOW and made in to the list "crimes against the humanity" at International Courts. A year from now is too late.

No no no, I MEANT to do that! (Turn left in snow)

Cops using unexpected level of force to arrest girl

CreamK says...

Nothing wrong here, the girl is just shouting all the time. She even had her cuffs put on front after all that crying and what does she do? Tries to twist them off (FYI, it doesn't work..) while shouting "i'm hurting" when clearly no ones is hurting her. The bad thing about this kind of attitude is that if you're actually hurt, no one believes you and you get those unfortunate cases where someone is denied of medical care. There are tons of vids on police brutality, this is not one of them.

How attached cats are to their owners?

CreamK says...

Speaking from my own experience, so skip if you need facts..

Depends on a cat but the ones that are brought up in an environment where it hasn't suffer any major traumas (note, i don't mean neglect or abuse, even a cat living in best possible conditions can get in accidents that change their behavior) tend to inspect everything new as priority one. Basically, if it's not with kittens, it's gonna check any new things or people as soon as possible. The difference how dogs behave is dramatic, they tend to keep owners as reference. Cats don't do that and it's all about pack mentality.

When the cat is rescued or had a accident, they tend to associate owners as more of a mother figure and sometimes are almost incapable to handle separation. I've had a few cats as guests and for healthy cat it's few seconds to touch, few minutes before it sits on your lap and few hours before it trusts you to pick it up. Even in the worst cases by day four you are among the humans it trust but it might require some trust building exercises.. (One that does the trick well is if the cat sits in owners lap, stranger sits beside the owner, humans interact normally, in calm voice, no sudden movements and don't take notice of the cat, sometimes for hours. Every time it's inborn curiosity wins.

Funnily, i haven't had the same effect with food which is in contrast on this study. "Healthy" cats pick up really really fast who hands out the sustenance and can ditch the owner in a heartbeat for a good meal.... If the stranger has softer lap, that's where the darn thing heads. Cat just chooses very simply the best available option and needs to be aware of all options so it's curious. I kind a like that quest for efficiency. A lot of signs of empathy are actually cat trying to do what it can so that it's owner returns to normality; you cry, it comes rubbing on you. Not because of love but simply "won't you shut the f#¤% up".

But i've seen cats with their owners and they sure do love them. It' just that cats love is inclusive rather than exclusive.

Snowdrop Next-Gen Engine | Tom Clancy's The Division

CreamK says...

And the fact that this demo wasn't rendered in real time... But it wouldn't be presented unless it works fast enough for those clips to be rendered in theory with a machine that's powerful enough. Procedural desctruction is nothing new but it complexes carefully optimized scenes in unpredictable ways very fast so kudos if they've solved it.

Carl Sagan's View On Science, Technology and the Government

CreamK says...

You got it totally wrong. It was not a criticism against democracy or goverment but a genuine warning about our leaders lack of knowledge. This applies mostly on US politicians who have special hatred against science because of their religious beliefs. The same people have no problem benefiting from any advances made in science but tries as hard as he can to deny any knowledge of the subject, akin to "dark ages" where knowledge of religion was banned from common folks.

The lesson in this video is that the leaders you choose to represent you should have brains and ideologies that concentrate on facts, not beliefs.

Science Vlogger reads her comments

CreamK says...

Would be nice to see what are the proportions of women looking at science videos. I'm pretty sure (pun intended) the problem stems from that, at least partly: how to engage women in these traditionally patriarchal fields.

Another thing... I'm straight male and intelligent women "get me going", big time.. commenting on appearance kind a defeats that.
