QI - Drugs and Drink and Stuff

Correction: wormwood is very mildly hallucinogenic, you need ti ingest a lot more than fits into a bottle. We are talking about quantities that are present in cabbages, tomato plant, potato etc... Totally harmless. It's the high alcohol on Absinthethat made people see fairies, it's super easy to drink too much. QI made a correction in later shows.

Police Shoot and Kill 80-Year Old Man in His Own Bed

CreamK says...

Pretty typical, if the cops want to search your premises, they will. In this case, it was that wall and gate that caused suspicions. Then "anonymous informant" steppes in to the picture, you got all the ticks checked, go ahead in full swat gear, detain everyone, see if there something that you can justify the action.

The bad thing is, often they are right. Suspicious places often are suspicious. So it gets fed back in the system "this method works, we get only x% of wrongful blaa blaa". They do the same here, busting chili growers for marijuana... Then they try to justify it, play it down or simply threaten to keep quiet. Bad thing here is, if you obtain evidence during wrongful seizure or search, it's still valid. So the act of obtaining evidence is is illegal but evidence is not. This sounds right if the reprimand for breaking the law fro obtaining evidence is treated as a crime but it never is in any western society that i know of. Usually things go to internal investigation that results at most a non-paid leave, a paid leave, a verbal notice and most often, absolutely nothing.

It's "end justify the means" policy and we did our best to get rid of that by inventing all these complicated laws protecting us that are now turned on against us. W can do with uncomplicated laws too, the society would stay lawful, peaceful. The injustice that comes should be enough reason to not go back few centuries.

Oakland CA Is So Scary Even Cops Want Nothing To Do With It

Private security can not fix social problems.

First you fix poverty, then crime.

Other way around, there is only one way: forever sentences, "no rehabilitation only penalty" is the goal. Trying to sweep "undesirables" away, clean and neatly tucked away in private prisons. It's very neat way of "fixing" the leak by pusnihing one part of your own populace on different rules. What do you think will happen once it goes for a generation? Children are taught from ground-up to not trust the government, the police and the rest of the society that's want to basically kill them but are too afraid so it's dealt with another route: destroying any chance of social mobility by promoting inequality, making tougher laws for crimes that are mostly only happening on lowest economic classes, giving out sentences for the same crimes differently depending how those background factors are that the people themselves can't help. That is an effective solution, it's not final but in these quarterly run world, nothings forever but instead "make profit now".

And then after all that claiming "it's the land of the free", "pursuit of happiness" etc. Everything is very logical under those circumstances. If you are poor, it's your own fault. That is the message blasted all over. Even when shown the overwhelming evidence how equality promotes happiness, social mobility, prevents poverty, it seems that every US citizen, poor or rich thinks otherwise.

The inequality in USA means POWER. It means "i'm better than you". The whole country is sick in that attitude (Sorry, US citizens, i wouldn't say all this if i didn't lover you and your country). You are never good if you're as good as the next person.

Countries that do promote equality, the attitude is "this is enough", i don't need to be better than my neighbor to feel good. It doesn't mean they are lazy or unambitious, it means that boasting with wealth is considered vulgar, idiotic, uncivilized. You can have a guy earning triple right next to you and you can't really see the difference.

This does not fit US frame of mind where money is the only way to happiness and you never can have enough. If you have it, you want to shove it in everyones face.

Even Pat Robertson Denies the Earth is 6,000 Years Old!!!!

CreamK says...

Funny, i come from a background where young earth was a fact taught to me. By the time i was 10, the overwhelming evidence pointed towards at least hundreds of thousands of years and by the time i was 15, the whole thing was over for me. The church i was in, changed it's views (maybe the only thing they've admitted..) but that was after i was long gone. So i know young earth theories pretty well and they are all bullshit.

Let me ask you this, if creation is such big part of the bible, why does that story only last two pages? It's very vague and cryptic, the subtle changes between two different languages in those very first words allow all kinds of theories in them and i'm not talking about translations that are changing text deliberately, i'm talking about "honest to god" verbatim translations. Believing that Earth is old is not blasphemy. Believing that earth is young and then cherry picking the rest of the book as you wish.. That is the real blasphemy. If your Young Earth believer, you are also believing that owning of slaves is good etc all that stuff that you don't believe in. You can't say that one part is absolute truth taken literally and the next is not.

There are plenty of theists who believe in an old age of the Earth; however, they have to compromise scripture in a big way to get it to work. Also, and I've said this before, I used to be a firm believer in an old age of the Earth, but I changed my mind because of the evidence, not in spite of it. I had always believed there was very good evidence proving it was true, as that was the way I was taught and raised. I found out this was not so, or even close to it, and when I found out I would have to put more faith in the assumptions being made than I would in the bible, I chose to put my faith in scripture. I am fairly sure most of the people of this site were at the place I used to be, believing it because that is what is taught in school and mirrored endlessly in the culture. You see it in movies, books, televisions show, reinforcing it over and over again. But when I took the time to understand the actual evidence I found that they have taken some very big leaps of faith, completely unjustified, and actually contrary to the evidence that they find.

You mean that there's a demand for a bank type institution to actually do what banks do: store savings and grants loans instead of taking your money, creating a huge sum of money from that, then invest that in to options and derivatives that is basically gambling, then losing it all and getting everything back as bailouts? Really, who would've guessed a traditional bank is a good thing when it doesn't run on "profit now" ultra-capitalist principle.

It's something that is very common elsewhere in the world. There usually is a demand for very simple, traditional basic banks that can't swindle with overdraft charges, credit cards pushed to people who can't handle them, just the basic bank you store money temporarily.

There are regulations in place that allow such banks to be exist and these banks are the real backbones of the economy, increasing growth in the smallest sectors that immediately invest that money back in to the economy. It might even be state backed bank or a group of citizens, it might be mandatory by law etc. Usually every country has one. It promotes equality, social mobility and keeps the cash rotating much longer than what investing towards investment banking does. The latter is just a cancer, it doesn't really do anything but it skims the most wealth and that wealth does not move anywhere, it stays in that imaginary system.

In USA, regulatory system is so stripped out that freerange capitalism is really showing how bad it is when it's left running things. Capitalism is like fire: good servant, poor master.

All the lobbying by Monsanto and a like to get rid of GMO labeling is a clear warning sign: they don't want you to know it is there.
