via: etiquette

What do you guys think - if you find a video on another blog - do you / should you attribute it to the blog with a "via" link?

I know I always appreciate when blogs attribute finds to VideoSift.

I sometimes feel very suspicious when I see video blogs that have new posts that are 2 or 3 videos from our top 15. Not much to do about it I guess - but use the golden rule and try to exemplify the etiquette we would like others to have.

I often put in where I found my videos, but I sometimes don't, and I don't feel bad about it. For one thing, things come in waves, and sometimes things are 4 or 5 places I look, and sometimes I see a pointer to an idea one place and get the video elsewhere (like today when I saw an article on neatorama about glasswing butterflies, and then went looking for videos with them in them--no video was at the original article).

I do if it's a blog I regularly follow, or otherwise like. If not, I follow oxdottir's method. I don't bother to link if the blog I found it on was one of many who posted it almost at the same time.

none of us actually made or paid for any of this, so worrying about "via" etiquette seems bizarre to me.

or put it this way... if you find a vid on the sift that you like, feauring some talented guy or some amazing animation or music... do you ever go to the dude's youtube channel and thank him for providing you with free entertainment?

parasites, leeches, web 2.0 bitches

I usually try to put a link in, especially if more info can be found at the source.

Just a thought:
It might be a good idea to add a found on or via field on the submit page that could then link to the source alongside the posted clip.

That way people have to at least think about where they found it and could still make an active choice to leave it blank if the source is not worth mentioning in their eyes...
