Why I hate having the queue sorted by votes-to-views
I know it took Lucky some time to get it working properly, and the intention was to get the best videos fastest out of the queue. I like the concept in principle, but I don't think it's working.
It might be possible to fix some of these issues with a time-weighted ratio. But personally I'd like to see a return to sorting by queue date by default.
- Many of the best vids don't make it quickly out of the queue. The current Top 15 has six videos that had to be requeued to be published, which seems common.
- The first pages of the queue favour videos with low views, because that's when the ratio is most likely to be skewed by chance. If the first few viewers happen to vote a video up, that gives it an unnaturally high ratio.
- By the same token, if a video happens not to get votes on its first few views, it goes to the bottom of the pile, and all hope is lost.
- The result is that the vast majority of submissions get between 4 and 7 votes and then languish for days.
- Pagination doesn't work well, as the order bounces around a lot between page views.
It might be possible to fix some of these issues with a time-weighted ratio. But personally I'd like to see a return to sorting by queue date by default.

Similar thoughts to me (which had motivated my posting this).
I dont know how hard a change/alternative ranking options would be but im unconvinced the current system is achieving its aims.
You know you can change your personal sorting option just by checking one on the side. I for instance have mine defaulted to worst votes to views ratio. I think a lot of people are not actually using the default view. Although I suppose we could dig through our db and give you more exact results.
Thanks James, I do have mine set to sort by queue date, but I think the key thing is the default setting -- I'd be kinda surprised if the percentage of non-default viewers was all that high, but it would be interesting to find out (if it's easy to SQL up an answer).
Like arvana I set my personal sorting option on the unsifted videos by queue date. Still, also like arvana, I'd like to see the default setting for everyone sort by queue date, just like the sifted videos. *Quality.
And BTW, are we going to shorten queue times like we discussed a while back? I thought we had achieved a consensus in favor of this option, but nothing has changed yet. Is it in the works?
Awarding arvana with one star point for this contribution to Sift Talk - declared quality by kronosposeidon.
Yeah, I know, I was hoping for just another heuristics to order them by.
I set mine to show them according to date queued, and I totally agree that views/votes ratio is a horrible way to sort things as a default.
I totally agree with arvana here: default setting is the key issue, and it could/should be changed, since actual setting is clearly not working (nice idea, ok, but facts show it simply fails, sorry)
