What is Dubstep?

Dubstep is a genre of electronic music that has its roots in London's early 2000s UK garage scene. Musically, dubstep is distinguished by its dark mood, sparse rhythms, and emphasis on bass.

Now for some examples from the Sift.

Box of Dub: Dubstep & Future Dub Vol.1&2 are both very good examples of today's dubstep movement.

BBC Radio One's very own Mary Anne Hobbs debuts a lot of the newest dubstep releases, and has a pretty intense back-catalogue of in-studio live performances and DJ mixes from a lot of today's most heralded dj's and producers of the genre.

Si Begg and Cursor Miner have been releasing a lot of dubstep recently. Obviously Burial has been the recent breakthrough artist, but I think his first LP was much better than his most recent.

Watching dubstep on youtube is like eating a hamburger with chopsticks.

The first rule of dubstep is: do not talk about dubstep. just fucking dance. it is club music. just go to a club and dance, or stay at home debating which Burial album is the best. Or stfu.

^Debating? I just stated my opinion.

And sorry, we don't have any dubstep clubs here in Los Angeles. I literally have to fly to London for that.

But, dubstep isn't just club music. It's headphone music too.

FLY TO LONDON THEN.
or bristol, it's closer
and dubstep is only headphone music if your headphones have 18 inch subs or larger.

I do quite frequently!!

I go to the Combat & Rag&Bone parties quite a bit. But would love to bust over to Bristol!

^reeeeeeespek

i am just sensitive about the headphone thing because so many lithuanians used to listen to dubstep online and then say to me dubstep this, dubstep that, blah blah... but they never heard it in a club, and they definitely never heard it in a club with a good sound system. Man it is so annoying being born in the same town as Skream, going to school in the same town as Benga, and then having a Lithuanian telling you what is "real" dubstep.

ARgggghhhhhh

Awesome post. I really like the role the bass plays in Dubstep, great bass lines and bass drops I can recommend Dubstep Allstars vol 5. also has the Benga & Coki videoclip at the top on the album.

Thanks for this post. I spent the last weekend getting aquainted with dubstep and listened to a lot of it during the week. My basic impression (note: I have neither 18 inch headphones nor do I live in London) is: Great mood, great rhythm, but a bit too repetetive and the soundscape is too sparesely populated for my tastes. It's great to listen to while coding, and kind of relaxing (yeah, other people's dance music is my chill music).

The bastard child of Dubstep and Breakcore does peak my interest, though. Ebola's "Painkillers" (from Mutant Dubstep Vol 1) is currently on heavy rotation in my private soundpool. Looking around for Vol2 and 3 of the mutants. I may report back unless my face is et in the meantime.
