VideoSift Consumerism
I look at Power Points as my weekly salary. I know how much I will get every week, and when I will get paid. Being a donor, I just got a raise to 2 Power Points. Yay me! Now, what do I spend it on? I used to really enjoy to *promote people's videos and I love awarding smart posts with a *quality. There are also these very new things I could buy for myself such as a self-promote or a *beg.
I want to give out *qualities and *promotes like I used to, but with me being able to spend my salary on myself as opposed to others, I tend to opt for greed. My rationale, "I just don't make enough. Let the rich people pay into those charities. Why should I buy my neighbor a TV when I can get myself one." And so on and so on.
Anyone else feel the 'ickiness' of this consumerism on VS? Or, is it just me?

I feel you on this...and just like in real life, I've spent all my points on frivolous drunken rampages and owe somebody points here or there. But it's the only system we've got.
Yes exactly. I'd rather horde my points to use on my own videos. It's not like with *promotes and *saves where you had them specifically to give to others.
gorgonheap cannot promote this post because gorgonheap does not have enough Power Points.
^That's because I used them all up Mr. Bot. I won't get another for like... 100 days. I think we should either increase the limit of power points or do away with the self-serving commands.
Personally I enjoy promoting old classic clips and giving new sifters a chance to see them. I used the Beg option once, after all it is a new toy, and sure enough my begged video made it to the sift. Mitt thanks you.
If your into self promoting yourself and your sifts, I recommend the blogs, I've been whoring out videos left and right in there.
I also think that * begging should be free. Power points should be used to promote the videos of others, thereby fostering a sense of community. How about allowing sifters to * beg once every 4 days? For free, that is. The number of days between * begs is negotiable of course, but the main thing should be that * begging be free. Sound reasonable?
I think it all boils down to how one looks at the star point system. If the desire to get more star points takes presidense then of course it's warranted to use your power points on your own videos. There will most definately be members not using their power points on their own material, so it should all work out in the end, don't worry about it.
I'm absolutely not trying to claim any moral highground (let's face it, I couldn't even if I wanted to, seeing as how I can't use these points yet), but I do believe the quality control of the unsifted shouldn't be changed to make it easier to sift videos. This does make it harder to get star points, but it will also make sure the quality of videos sifted isn't likely to fall. The focus of the unsifted tag and the power point system shouldn't be to primarily increase ones own star point count IMO, but rather make sure good videos get another shot at getting sifted. Good in this context would not necessarily mean videos you yourself think is good enough, since this is a community of people the decision what is good enough to be sifted rests with everyone who can vote and not the individual who sifted the video.
The way I see it, that's why the power point system limits each member to the number of promotes, begs etc they can do.
The infinite requeue system was IMO terrible just because it counteracted the quality control of the community and let videos hang on indefinately that had been deemed substandard quality by the community.
As I said, it all boils down to how easy one wants it to be to get star points.
KP, I agree with you that the power points should be something we have to spend on others in the community. Kind of like compulsory foot massages for your neighbor's wife -- or, well... maybe something not so deviously untoward. But, yeah, community love!
