The "Shimabukuro" issue

Sorry if this has been brought up before, and I know there's a discussion at the video itself, but I wanted to suggest an improvement that has directly to do with it here.

So, everyone reading this probably was already involved in this discussion already, about new users signing up, promoting a video, and taking off. I have a suggestion which might solve this issue in the future to some extent, and maybe even just be enabled whenever there's an issue with a particular video. I bring it up now, after the "damage" has been done (with too many double quotes), because the same thing can definitely happen in the future.

Perhaps when a new user signs up, they have to wait a week before they can vote on a video. Well, you might say, then that might discourage them from continuing with the site and having a blast, thereby discourage general sign-uppage. Well, perhaps then a user could vote only on Queued videos for the first week. That's good for at least voting on 500 different videos (my guesstimation), and they could always playlist videos for upvoting at the end of their week.

Thoughts?

Various forms of this have been discussed before. Basically, the only real concern is a mob of new user voting on something, and generally that is noticed.

the worst thing is to bar new folks from participating. Heck, if it takes more than 30 seconds to sign up, most people walk away and never come back. i personally think it is too hard for new folks to get video on the front page. I would honestly prefer an escape limit of 6 for new folks.

But then again, think about how hard it was to get a submission on fark frontpage back in the day, etc. etc. can be said for most large sites. So part of the thrill is find a sift-worthy video, and it takes new folks awhile to do that. I guess it's better that those that keep trying might be better community members.

One idea might be to not allow scarlet "P" members to vote for other "P" submissions. But it hasn't been to big of a problem, and some people prefer to just be watchers and voters forever. I personally think X number of comments over a period of time removes the "P" or X number of votes over time. (Maybe this was implemented)

I don't think Jake will ever get displaced. Currently the vid is at 441, the closest fairly recent submission is at 179 (rembar's Pachelbel rant) submitted 3 months ago. Jake will probably stay at #1 unless Pachelbel gets lots of [star] promotes or someone finds a video of Richard Dawkins playing a ukulele on the Daily Show while juggling cats… (!)
But basically, it's what JD said, "mob-voting" will most likely get noticed and squashed.

I'm not quite sure why people seem to think something needs to be replaced as the numuro uno. Jake has been on the sift for what, whitout looking, close to a year. I say give it time. like firefly said Ron P got 179 and he hasn't even been on the sift more then a couple months.
