Once a day. SiftBot says you don't get it, but awards the point anyway if you're eligible. Check your profile - you have 4 points for fixes. Does that not sound right? The dead pool has only been active for about 5 days.

Not sure if anyone else pointed out that this obvious bug was happening, but thanks for mentioning it jonny. It's now fixed.

SC, as jonny said, one star is rewarded per user per 24 hours.

drattus says...

mlx didn't seem to get the star though they said they hadn't fixed any yet, total adds up to just the vids plus sift talk total, so I checked it myself. Fixed one and got the notice which was no surprise, but no star either. I hadn't fixed one yet either, just earned the bronze so I could this morning sometime and hadn't got to it yet.

Not sure what's up, maybe it reads a star earned for other reasons in the last day so doesn't award it for the fix either now? Only thing I can think of offhand.

Sounds like cure worse than disease. Actually, as looris pointed out, limiting the number of points you receive for fixing dead videos by time removes the incentive to fix more than X at a time. Fractional points were also noted to have some problems, so it would probably be better to award 1 point for every N fixes. Can that be implemented as easily?

swampgirl says...

Yeah Jonny that was pointed before, but it also isn't fair to the rest of the sifters to see someone just work on dead videos to rise in rank without earning the votes to get those stars.

twiddles says...

I've been thinking about that sampgirl, and I would like to see a limit to the amount of points you can get from things other than publishing videos to 50% of your total points. And in order to achieve the goal of encouraging people to fix dead videos it seems to make more sense to base it off of how many they fix rather than just 1 point a day. I would like to see both fixing dead videos and comment applauds be worth 1/10th of a point (or 1 point for every 10) without a distinction in type.

It is useful to reward actions other than publishing videos that help the community, but balance in the system is desirable.

but it also isn't fair to the rest of the sifters to see someone just work on dead videos to rise in rank without earning the votes to get those stars.

I disagree.

They EARNED those points, because fixing videos may be simpler than posting them from queue, but still it's a valuable work for the community.

I'm too lazy to do that, but I'd be glad if some dead videos would, well, not be dead. So awarding points to whoever fixed it is correct.

jonny says...

SG - I'm aware that fixing dead videos isn't as valuable as posting new stuff. That's why I suggested 1 point for some number of fixes, not for every fix.

twiddles - 10 seems kind of extreme. I think 5 fixes is probably dilute enough. Also, I like the requirement that a particular comment get 5 applauds to award a point. It recognizes a truly valuable comment, as opposed to a prolific commenter. Certainly some truly quality comments will be missed (a couple of yours in the thumbnail posts t come to mind) that deserve more applause, but that happens with vids too.

And requiring published videos to account for some percentage of a user's total number of points good idea too. Too bad I can't applaud.

twiddles says...

Jonny - I was suggesting 10 because it could be a combination of video fixes, applause or some future as yet unidentified contribution. Five might be sufficient for just dead video fixes, but keep in mind I was able to fix 32 in one day. -- I see your point about the applause, and I agree partially with you. But does 4 applause mean the comment wasn't truly valuable? (*)Quality is given out fairly readily for posts that someone in the community deems are valuable. It only takes one goldie to do so. Yet someone who contributes an insightful or useful comment needs 5 goldies to agree? Frankly, although I enjoy being rewarded for fixing dead videos, I feel a little guilty like I'm sneaking in the back door. And at the same time I wonder why 5 is the magic number for applause.

jonny says...

Good point about quality comments vs posts. I still think 10 would be kind of high - whatever combination of posts, comments, and fixes, that would be a lot more work than one published video.

I'm definitely convinced - fractional points are the way to go. I think we should weight various contributions differently too. For instance, I personally think fixing a dead video is more valuable than making a good suggestion, so I'd suggest something like a 1/4 point for fixes, 1/5 point for good comments, etc.

lucky760 says...

Whoops! Sorry everybody. I seem to have "fixed" the wrong thing and broke it double big.

Now it should be working properly and everyone should have the appropriate stars credited momentarily.
