Re-Sifting the Sift.
So on my Weekly crusade to hunt down dead links I said to myself; "Self, how come there are published posts that have much less then 10 votes?" And I came to no certin conclusion. Personally I think when the site was first born a lot of crud got tracked in that people later found to be obnoxious or outdated. (for example: political or recent pop culture satires) Which later became forgotten or irrelivent. Some I know would never get on the sift nowdays. Perhaps I'm over zelous but I think if we could re-queue some of the videos that have lost their fame we could clean out the Sift. Let me know what you think. Or if through my poor grammer you can even understand what I'm trying to say :-p

A lot of the videos that have low votes are videos that were sifted way back when you only needed 4 votes to get on to the front page. I suppose we could go back and clean some of the lower quality stuff out, but having been around since day 3 I sort of enjoy the nostalgia associated with a simpler time when Dag and I employed split personalities to talk to each other on every thread.
I can understand that. I'll admit I have mixed feelings on this one too.
I was curious about the old "under 10s" myself. If I like 'em I give them a vote and add them to the playlists I'm building. Maybe eventually the good ones will rise to the top. Would downvoting the outdated or bad ones serve any purpose?
deja-vu?

Only if a system were enacted where ones that had receved enough downvotes to be voted off the sift. From what I know there is no system in place. I'd at least like something to see somthing take care of duplicates. Most people don't know they are posting something that was on the sift over a year ago.
any video that gets to -2 votes is discarded. The top video on the classics page is actually only 6 votes away.
James has already made the point/answer that lisa and gorgon were posing.
I like the oldies - it's fun to decide whether to run them for a promote or to just check on them to see if they still have a pulse (or if they need a *-dead call). Sort of like wandering through a field of half dead soldiers? Wait, that's my worst analogy of the year, so far.
Tastes of the majority are probably different now. Chances are they will be different a year from now too. What is quality to one may be trash to another. I suggest we let the upvotes and downvotes determine what stays and not explore revisionist queue levels on the old material. Though older vids may not have as high a number of votes, there was time spent in locating them. Some of those votes were not necessarily easy to get either. Vids dieing in the queue is not a new phenomenon for the Sift.
Well I leanred something new today. I didn't know any video with a -2 gets the ax. Well I'm satisfied with that. Back to collecting the dead. "Bring out your dead!" * Ding * "Bring out your dead!"
