Powerpoints with Expiration Date?

Hey folks,

a thing that crossed my mind:

How about we give powerpoints an expiration date like one week or so?

Why you ask?
I realized I have a bunch of points and they are really just sitting there and don´t help anyone. Having an expiration date on them could convince people to spend, rather than hoarding them.

"B̶u̶t̶ I̶ d̶o̶n̶'t̶ w̶a̶n̶n̶a̶ b̶e̶ a̶ p̶i̶r̶a̶t̶e̶!̶ " "But I don´t know what to use them for! Don´t force me!"
Good point. I guess you could try a little harder and try to find something worth spending them on. Which would have the desired effect and raise interaction with the site.

Or/And: If you still can`t find anything: what if expiring points went towards a good cause on the sift?Like another user or to the wise siftbot to distribute?

Further thoughts:
- Maybe the expiration date should only apply to earned points, not the renewing ones.
- Maybe you could use 100 (or amount x) of them to pay for a month of premium service for yourself or someone else. (Like the "give gold" feature on reddit)

And what about limiting the number of total available points on the site to amount x per registered user? This would impact inflation and make them almost like a currency.

Who knows: Maybe powerpoints could end up like Bitcoin and the Winklevoss Twins will invest a Gazillion Dollars in the Sift...

Looking forward to a discussion on the general idea.

Well, I don't know exactly what or how I would like to change about the powerpoints, but I do think we could do with some more things you can use them for. *quality ideas! *promote

I'm proud of my handful of power points, but since I don't have a star yet I can't really use them on anyone else. Sure, I can beg for a video here or there, but I don't want them to expire because I'm biding my time until I can put them to good use!

I'm also a sifter who might go a month or two between video posts. I keep coming back because I like the community, and I usually think of Video Sift if I see a video I really enjoy. I think I'd be sad if I came back after a couple months to find all my power points had expired.

I don't come here very often these days so I'm with @lullaby_lune on this one. Also, I don't like the idea of sifters clamoring to use their powerpoints up before they expire. That will probably lead the promoting less quality stuff.

I don't get that many powerpoints and when I do get them, I like to use them for things I really want to promote and quality.

Good points. But would a use by date not cause you to check the sift more often, to keep your points from expiring?

And like I suggested above, maybe only earned points expire, not the "refill" ones.

I totally understand your side of this. Would love to see more people voice their opinion on this.

When I see something I'd like to promote I fix dead embeds to recharge points. 2 dead fixes, 2 power points. Use, fix, repeat. Up-to-date embed and sift coins to throw around recklessly...win.
Almost made Necromancer level 69 and wishin' I was a lesbian.

I use my powerpoints to suppress, humiliate, and dehumanize people. Why would I want an expiration date on that? Seriously it's like the only bastion of power I have left in my life, and now you want them to expire? I am using my powepoints to *obliterate your freedom to express views contrary to my own!

Can somebody explain Power Points for me? I have (17) points sitting to the right of my name, but my Profile says I last used a Power Point back in September 5, 2010, which would be wrong as I promoted a video within the last couple of weeks.

That said, I don't think a use by date is the way to go. I think the Achievements section is where to go for more rewards. Use you Power Points to promote a video that isn't yours, and it makes it to the top 15? Get an Achievement (The Promoter Badge or something like that), if that video makes it to #1 off your promote (not sure how they would work that formula out, probably have to promote a video before it Sifted and it rise fairly quickly after that) then perhaps another Achievement or a single Power Point reward. Those would help encourage people to promote quality videos that aren't theirs. Perhaps add an Achievement bit to the hover text over their indicator, like hover over my ruby it would say "Ranked #85 - 10265 votes - 350 star points - 8 achievements" perhaps adding "(lvl 14)" after the achievements to indicate the highest achievement level (not counting anniversary).

TLDR: Achievements would be a better thing to encourage interaction and non-self promotion.

I would like some of those unused power points. I would use them to get more attention to other sifters videos which didn't get the attention they needed the first time through. I like looking back at posts that are many years old and finding those few gems.

Not really, to be honest. I usually check the Sift because I've just seen a video that made me laugh, inspired me, or I otherwise thought was awesome and worth sharing. It's never been about the points for me -- they're more like a pleasant surprise if anything.

That being said, having the points there gives me a sense that I can contribute something to the community here when I do check in. (even if my possible uses for Power Points are still pretty limited)
