Friendly list-o

I was looking for someone I've engaged in previous conversation with on here, and I've always found him again through topic searches, then by his avatar picture since I rarely send him messages but DO like to contact him about certain topics. I think I've either found him based on the topics, and he's changed his avatar picture, or I haven't found him at all and don't know how to find him without tedious comment searches.

This got me thinking that it would be kind of nice to have a profile option for "saved people" with maybe a space for a comment per entry. This would make it easier to keep people organized into people I like, people I dislike, and why. Seems like it could be a useful feature in what has become a very diverse crowd in the sift with constantly changing member avatars.

Something simple would be nice, and maybe it would even be private per profile to avoid people using the option for abuse..
Just a thought..

I've mentioned this before, but it was quickly squashed by people who thought it was too much like Facebook. They be hatin'. To find people's profile pages on here (who aren't easily located in the top 15) I have to search for their name and hope to find one of their comments.

*quality idea.

I was afraid people would perceive this suggestion as a movement towards facebook similarity, but it really wouldn't be like that... In a community that promotes interaction between members who sometimes have very strong opinions, it can be difficult to remember who you relate to and who you gravitate away from, ESPECIALLY when the picture associated with each name has the potential to change so frequently. If the list of selected members were kept private to each member page I think it would remove the ability for people to use it in a pseudo-political fashion around here or to abuse in other ways. In my mind, it would just be a list with links to people you can add with a brief memo section where you could enter a reason why they are on the list. Nothing more.

The only other way to find anyone is as you say blank! It's actually sort of ridiculous that to find someone you have to look through old comment logs or try to find a video by them, etc. Then if the picture is different, you're left wondering if you've found the right person.

thanks for the quality! Also, I wasn't able to find your previous sift talk suggestion or I would have just promoted it

I don't usually have a hard time remembering people, surprisingly, but I often can't remember exactly what their username was. Names with numbers, made-up words or odd spelling can be hard to track down.

I'd really like to be able to search for users. Maybe we could even do @name auto-completion like Facebook?

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

It's a friends list - calling it something different is just playing with semantics. We proposed one to the community quite a while ago - and there was a bit of a backlash on potential FaceBookization of the Sift.

well you can call it whatever you like but as far as it being a "list of friends" that's not what I'm envisioning. For example, would I add choggie's various personas to a "friends list?" Probably not, but it would be useful to have an accessible list of them for reference when I see something fishy. He was recently here as Boneremake(?) or something like that and from the first comment I saw, I was suspicious and figured I'd keep an eye on the comments. Then I didn't see anything from him for a while and by the next time I saw something, the avatar was either different or I didn't remember it, and I wasn't sure it was the same guy.

I'm thinking more of a personal organizational list of members stored for whatever reason. Something like:

Chicchorea - sifts interesting music, good taste (example links)
boneremake - said some racist stuff, suspected of choggie (link)
randomexample - agree strongly politically
anotherexample - probably a troll, spouting offensive stuff with no reason (links)
??man?? - enjoys This american life, share episodes periodically

Using this example, if you see "anotherexample" saying some garbage in a video, it would be easier to call him on trolling without having to dig through his comment log to make sure it's the same person you're thinking of.

Sounds like a great method of keeping track of fellow sifters.
... as long as it isn't used as a list of who's videos to watch so only the "Friends" are getting the vote-ups while others are being ignored - that would be counter productive to what we do here.

...Liking the idea though!
