i usually just DON'T vote for it. If nobody votes for something it won't be sifted. I reserve downvoting for something that doesn't belong here. I use it to show that it lessens the average quality of the sift. I can't justifiably downvote something just because I don't think it's funny if I think it could be funny to others.

Remember, you can exercise your opinion by not voting as well. And it's the EASIEST one you lazy cheetoh eating slobs can exercise.

My take is, if its offensive/stupid without redemption I down-vote, I've only done this twice. If I don't care for it or it just bores me I just don't vote. I see a lot of obscure videos that fit into that category, I know they're hard to sift, and I know they hold a lot of value to other people even if I don't care for them, hence why I just leave them be.

All that said, I think people should us their votes as they see fit, some people hate the cute kitty vids, and if they wanna down-vote those, more power too 'em.

Unlike real voting, siftvoting is analyzed for intent, as if each downvote were a potential hate crime. That probably makes a few potential downvoters wary.

There are so 'few' downvotes visible because highly downvoted stuff is simply removed...most sifters are aiming for material that earns the highest number of votes no matter the content.

Mostly peeps don't downvote because the nail sticking up is the one that gets hammered down. Almost no one wants to be the lone voice of dissent. ALMOST. HA HA HA HA! Good night.

I think I use my downvote powers more liberally than others. Check my down voted videos out, you'll see they are mostly crap, and / or I have a good reason to do what I did. So far I haven't got any shit from the down voting, so I think thats proof that no one fear retribution. Well, except from one user, but that was squashed long ago.

[edit] well, I just looked at my downvote list and there is something fishy going on. Theres videos in there that i know I didn't downvote.

I quoted and bolded this because of how much I agree with what jwray said and because I think that this message has to be impressed upon any and all VS users repeatedly.

Title, tags and and the sifter's commentary are a part of the content. I vote on all three and the video. If the video is "meh" and the title is pure shit, I'll downvote and not think twice.

There are many, many videos that I find "average" or "mediocre" that I just don't vote on, because I think maybe others will like it. But I suppose, I could be more stern.

Has the irony of asking for more downvotes and then complaining about my downvote record hit you yet? I downvoted EVERY comment on this thread(up until I logged off on Friday at least), not just the "sensible" ones.

I wouldn't ever go on a downvote tirade except that in this circumstance it seemed excusable for the sake of humor. You know... humor.

Let me just say that I won't ever again downvote someone's comment as a joke in response to the subject they are discussing. I have learned my lesson. Oh wise one.

Down voting is childish in my opinion. You like a video, you vote for it. You don't like a video, you don't vote for it. The down-vote takes it one step further. It's saying "I don't give a shit about how many people like this video I'm going to reduce that number by 1. My opinion means so much I will use my power to nullify another users vote".

Also I believe it was stated that "way too many who indiscriminately upvote" at the beginning of this thread. Are you kidding me? Look at some of the most popular video here. Of the people who view and those that vote it's usually 90% or more that don't vote at all. Do you really believe those 90% didn't vote because they didn't like the video? No...it's because the vast majority of the people here do not vote at all.
