When should a *dupeof invocation be called?

I've duped a few videos recently - some of them were quite 'hot'. I've noticed some folks just leave links to a dupe in the comments, even if they are Gold Star or above and have the power to call a *dupeof. What's the SOP here?

Personally I call them as soon as I see 'em (doesn't seem fair to the original submitter to let a dupe linger). Nothing personal folks.

I voted ASAP, but it's a bit more complicated than that.

If the user is able to dupeof, I prefer posting a link or alerting him in the comments and let him/her do it.
If the video is already up with 15+ votes I'll go with letting it gain more votes while it's hot.

Generally though, I'd just call it as soon as I've confirmed it's a dupe.

Can hotness transfer to the old vid with the dupeof invoke? Say there is a dupe but it is "hot" (popular enough to be on/near the front page). Call dupeof, put the old vid where the dupe was and give that attention to the old vid as it is for whatever reason relevant at the time. The vid gets the attention, and the original poster gets the credit.

just dupe it when you find it. it annoys me when you have the ability to dupe it, but just leave a comment instead its just as easy to write "dupeof" infront of that you link you left, finish the job and get it over with.. and why does anyone get pissed when their video is a dupe?

Ideally it should be called immediately, but I think when we have the system we have now, it can be nice to let a video gather some votes, because the original could be several years old and therefore completely impossible to find by browsing. That's the main reason I usually just drop links and let them be. Some times, I don't really wanna check in depth either, so if I suspect a dupe if make the post too instead.

I don't want to accidentally make a wrong invocation either, so if I don't have time to look through properly, I let other do it by verifying the link.

I'd like to see something like rgroom1 suggests, some level of hotness passed on to the one you dupe to, so it doesn't feel like you're killing the video when dupeoffing. If it feels bad to do it, something is wrong.

I've left comments regarding a video being a dupe (as I don't have privileges yet), but I've sometimes checked back and noticed the owner has then simply discarded or killed the video, making it a total waste of votes anyway.

I say dupeof should be done immediately.

If a new submission is getting a lot of votes, I'd prefer to see it left around to gather more, especially if the original is more than 8-10 months old.
It gets exposure, it gathers votes, and from what I've seen when a dupe is called the original doesn't get any kind of 'hotness' bump, so by invoking *dupeof you're effectively removing a vid from the table entirely.

Hence the ability to promote. If you call dupeof on a video, nothing stops you from then promoting the original to get it more votes. Unless they are out of power points I suppose. I will do both, either put a link if the duper has the ability to dupe it himself. If then after a couple days it's still not duped, I'll invoke myself. If the duper cannot invoke, I will do it immediately most of the time.

I usually only leave a comment when the duped video is one of mine, and I can't use dupeof to fix it myself.

Well, you know, if you would just wait two or three years, I guess it would all right itself.

Be patient. Take what you're given.
