World's First Laser Rust Remover

Cougar released from trap

Ashenkase says...

My Uncle used to work at the animal control facility at Mirabel International Airport North of Montreal. I visited him when I was young and he would have all manner of exotic animals at his house (parrots, a chimp, etc).

At one point someone, I kid you not, tried to smuggle in a cub Mountain Cougar. Algernon was confiscated and put into my Uncles care.

He ultimately took on ownership of Algernon. When I was just 7 years old I remember visiting him and being chased down and scratched by young Algernon. He was cute, but those claws let you know what he would grow into.

Fast forward another 7 years and my Uncle moved to Ontario close to our town. We would visit every now and then and see Algernon. At his maturity he was 15 foot from head to tail. He would live inside the house in a converted room for his needs with a huge cage door. He would spend time outside on a very long, very fortified run. To feed Algernon my Uncle would open the door to his room, close it behind him and deliver the food. My Uncle is all 5' 4" tall, but you wouldn't know it. Algernon would put his front paws up on my Uncles shoulders and you would just hear my Uncle in a slightly annoyed voice "shoo" Algernon off like he was a pesky kitten trying to jump on him for dinner.

I remember sitting at the foot of his cage door looking into his eyes. A few things I learned... never look directly into a large cats eyes and never... never turn your back to a large cat.

Algernon eventually went on to a wildlife preserve that took great care of him until end of life... although not lucky to be taken out of his habitat he sure was well kept post smuggling.

Via NC: Ignored for Years, a Radical Economic Theory Is Gaining Converts

That's Bloomberg reporting on Post-Keynesianism/MMT. On the front page, no less. They paint it as something radical, as if the works of Keynes, Kalecki and Minsky (or Knapp in Germany 100 years ago) never made it out of the dark corners of economic theory. Post-Keynesianism, at its core, is 80 years old, it has merely been pushed aside by monetarists and the likes.

Still, kudos to Bloomberg for shining some light on MMT.

Molten salt + Water = Stand back! (teaser)

Drachen_Jager says...

I wouldn't say the explosion is inexplicable. Pretty easy to explain actually.

A large blob of salt hits the water. Water cools the outside of the salt, and it hardens into a shell. Some water gets in cracks in the shell to hit the molten center of the blob and is instantly converted to steam, the steam is forceful enough it doesn't simply come out through the crack and instead shatters the outside shell of the salt bada-bing, >bang<.
Ahh, I see some people beat me to it.

This is what I get for not reading comments before posting.

Tim Minchin Vs. Cardinal Pell (child abuser protector?)

newtboy says...

Once again, the Catholic Church is clearly and incontrovertibly guilty of being a criminal organization. Why in the hell have they not been brought up on RICO charges and had every penny they own in each country converted to public property? They are actually more guilty than NAMBLA, who at least admits who they are and what they do, rather than using their considerable power and influence to hide it and continue the abuse in 'secret', or protecting well known perpetrators from prosecution.
Fuck the church. Organized religion is one of the most disastrous ideas in human history.

Here's Why You Need Winter Tires As Shown By A Tricycle

coolhund says...

Here in Germany its easy to have a direct comparison. Winter tires are pretty much mandatory in the Winter. The difference is huge. You cant use summer tires or allseason ones on lots of snow. You will get stuck. With Winter tires you will have no problems except in the harshest conditions here only spikes or chains will help. But even there you will have it much easier with Winter tires than with summer ones.

Also, due to my high powered car, I easily notice when temperatures get too low for summer tires. They will start spinning much easier even on dry pavement. That starts at around 8C. Winter tires wont spin easily even at minus temperatures.

And yes, some people have season cars. One for Winter and one for warmer seasons. But thats mostly because they dont want to ruin the good season one, because its more valuable to them (mostly old timers, young timers, convertibles, sports cars).

The Jewish migration to Judea was happening well before WW2, with lots of conflict with the native population, acts of terror on both sides. The British had a mandate from the League of Nations to administer it and decided to allow this influx. And Israel isn't as insular as you believe, there is no racial purity test to prevent being "bred out of existence", they accept people who have no Jewish blood but have converted to Judaism.

scheherazade said:

That's in part to do with how during WW2 Europe had the bulk population of Jewish faithed people.

Outside of Europe, the population of Jewish faithed persons was scattered throughout little towns and ghettos (in the social sense, eg. like NY's Chinatown for the Chinese).

There was a small-ish population of Jewish Poles (called the Zionists) that had in the WW1 era moved to Palestine and bought land together to form their own communities.

Basically, the high concentration of Jewish faithed persons in Europe in the WW2 era made it easy to target a large percentage of their overall population.

Judea (Referred to as "Palestine" by the Romans - hence why in modern times Judea was called Palestine) had converted from Judaism to Christianity around 300 ish AD (under the influence of Rome), and then to Islam around 700 ish AD (Under the influence of the Islamic expansions). By WW2, Judaism was an archaic religion in the middle east. Similar to Zoroastrianism, where small pockets still can be found, but its otherwise not represented.

It's not till after WW2 (1948) when Britain carved out the nation of Israel from [at the time British colonial] Palestine, and surviving Jewish Europeans immigrated there from Europe, and subsequently Jewish faithed Arabs/Burburs immigrated there from around the middle east, that there was another major concentration of Jewish faithed persons to be found.

(This is when the Arab vs Israel conflict(s) began. A fun irony is that much of Israel's military in 1948 was German equipment (bf109s, etc), and much of the Arab equipment was British (spitfires, etc).)

(The Nazi government did a lot of killing, tho. The Soviet Union alone lost ~10 million soldiers, ~14-17 million civilians, and ~1-2 million Jewish persons.)

One of the reasons why Israel is so insular in regards to non-Jews, is because their overall population is small enough that they would be bred out of existence in a few generations.

A particular take on what went wrong with Islam

On a side note, I was very surprised to learn there were only 15 million Jews in the world today. I really tought there were ten times more. (double-checked in Wikipedia)

Further more, the Jewish population of 1933 was estimated around 15 million at that time too. The nazis killed approx. 6 million of them. Hitler basically killed half of the Jews that existed. That's nuts!

Lesbians Touch a Penis for the First Time. Yikes.

newtboy jokingly says...

Um...no. If they were pushing for that, I'm pretty sure a flamingly gay guy would NOT be the "right guy" to convert them.

VoodooV said:

this is...something people want to see?

I don't get it. is this part of the not so secret delusion that some people seem to have that they will convert a lesbian if they're with the right guy or something?

Sweden Being Raped To Death By Muslim Migrants

bobknight33 says...

@Lawdeedaw

No.

Muslim is the only religion who tenents is to force you to convert, if not then extort money from you if not then kill you.

Christians would just call you sinners and go about their day.

newtboy said:

Yes, they are, which makes singling one out as 'bad' while ignoring the same evil in one's own, and most other religions all the more terrible.

Stephen Attempts To Convert Bill Maher

shinyblurry says...

Colbert is trying to convert Bill Maher to his religion, but religion cannot save you. A religion is mans attempt to reach God by his own merits, but there is nothing we can do to reach God on our own. The reason Jesus Christ died on the cross is because man is utterly unable to merit his own salvation. A lifetime of good works, added up together, cannot wipe out a single sin.

Our sins are wiped out only by the sacrifice that Christ made on the cross, when He paid for the sin of the world. His payment for our sins is accounted to us when we put our trust and faith in Him as Lord and Savior. We will all pay for our sins either on our own merit, or on the merit of Jesus Christ, who was accepted as a sacrifice for sins by God because He had never sinned and met Gods righteous requirement of moral perfection.

Colbert isn't alone; we are all bad at this. We cannot live up to Gods requirements, but God sent His Son Jesus Christ to do what we can never do and pay the price we cannot pay so we can be reconciled to God and obtain eternal life.
