Not that it seemed to apply to most of the vehicles that crashed but a lot of modern cars with LED or HID lights have a VERY aggressive cutoff, with the driver's side light being angled down slightly to minimize blinding oncoming traffic. Unless you have your high beams on (which you can't really on a busy highway), it's quite easy to outdrive those lights on a poorly illuminated section of highway.

On another note, I wonder what happened to that dude in the red shirt that got back into his car just before it was hit. I didn't see him get out... Anyone who’s driven at night on LA freeways would expect exactly this. Between oncoming semi trucks with their brights on, signs, intermittent street lighting, etc, night vision is non existent. Anything not lit is invisible beyond 30 ft ahead.
Also, out driving your headlights is the norm almost everywhere. Low beams illuminate about 150 ft ahead, at 65mph it takes over 500 ft to stop on average (according to google), farther for heavy vehicles, worn brakes, and trucks. A recipe for disaster.

I believe the train engine is built to withstand a crash like this one, meaning it will not explode or come apart in large heavy pieces. Also it is a passenger train. To apply full braking could cause more injuries for the passengers onboard.

I also think any passengers in a stuck vehicle on the tracks will more times than not have plenty of time to abandon the vehicle before impact. An 8-car passenger train moving at 80 miles an hour needs about a mile to stop.

If an engineer sees that a bridge up ahead is out, he would probably apply full braking and deal with the injuries to passengers rather than risk deaths.

On this one, Bob, assuming you are not being ironic, I totally agree with you. Most people drive about 11.5 miles each way to and from work--and most cars used for non-work go less distance. Range for at least one car in a family isn't really the hang up.

A Tesla Model X (just to pick one) goes 0-60 in around 3.8 seconds. 3.8 seconds is ridiculous fast. The Plaid variant does it in 2.5 seconds. The fastest internal combustion engine I've ever personally lived with did/does it in 5.9. Thus, moms hauling groceries can flatten the bags against the rear hatch about twice as fast as me. I am a poser lol.

The F-150 pick up is rumored to do it..4.4 seconds. Good grief. The load will fly out of the bed.

Even WITH the tax credit, it's a hard buy for most of us. I just finished paying off my first new car @ about $25k, but I DO make trips longer than 250 miles in a day somewhat regularly.
