More studies confirm Calcium still doesn't prevent fractures

ghark says...

Seems like a pretty good analysis.

Taking just about any supplement just for the sake of it, is pretty much like eating lollies, except they aren't tasty, and can have side effects. It's not really that calcium supplements are the main problem, it's that people are gullible.

Yeah, I've had it before and I don't really find it to be that tasty. Too watery.

Plus, the point of good ice cream is to not have large ice crystals.

Fun to watch and probably tasty...but not ice cream.

Meh. Still kickin'.

I just tried slacklining for the first time yesterday. It was exciting, cool, & slightly painful.

It's basically like whooping yourself with a belt if you bail the wrong way.

Also.. core strength.

But yeah, World Juggling Day was this past Saturday.

Got drunk on tasty beer and played with glowing juggling equipment.

Pretty awesome weekend I guess.

Hope yer feelin' well too!

Chinese People Try Panda Express For The First Time

MaxWilder says...

I'm a big fan of Panda Express when I can't find a tasty local mom & pop Chinese food place. It can be very good, or very bad depending on the restaurant, time of day, and other factors. I haven't nailed down exactly when is the best time to go, but I know that sometimes when I go it's delicious, and other times it will just taste like paste.

I'm not surprised at all that the people in the video have mixed opinions, but I'm really glad they weren't all bashing it.

Porn Actress Mercedes Carrera LOSES IT With Modern Feminists

curiousity jokingly says...

I'm a victim of pho. I'm a battered man that can't even look up Pho shops' signs in the eyes... mocking me.... teasing me.... taunting me.... Don't you think I wanted some fish and chips? I did, but I was shamed and force into getting pho. I starting to enjoy it. I've tried seeking help, but I can't find PA groups and no one will take me seriously. "Oh, you wanted that hot tasty soup in your mouth." I'm losing control of my life. I've starting learning how to sew so I make myself clothes so I can start dressing like a bowl of pho. I need help.

FAUX!!!!!
Pho is Vietnamese noodle soup.

...Or do you really want to talk about "Pho-victimhood getting more press & media coverage than actual victims" Talk about off topic...why are you obsessed with people being victimized by noodle soups?!?! I've never even heard of that being a problem.
I prefer to focus on the issue of battered women....and I keep it simple-flour, eggs, butter, and milk.

Why Do Aussie Trucks Have Bullbars?

ChaosEngine says...

Meh, you really don't. It's tough and not very tasty. Crocodile OTOH is delicious.

And he's not kidding about driving at night. Years ago, I drove from Sydney to Perth. I was always told not to drive at night, but one day the engine overheated a few hours from the nearest town. Got it going again, but had to drive in the dark for a few hours. Was lucky to miss a large desert red kangaroo, but unfortunately hit a wallaby. Pretty gruesome trying to extract it from the bullbars.

Now I want to eat a camel.

Megyn Kelly on Fox: "Some things do require Big Brother"

ChaosEngine says...

The jury is still out on vegetarian diets, and they are certainly nowhere near anything like a vaccination for heart disease. You can just as easily be an unhealthy vegetarian as an unhealthy carnivore.

Certainly, most people in the west do eat too much meat, but there's plenty of evidence to suggest that meat absolutely has a place in our diet. The problem with most of these studies is that they don't compare like with like. Vegetarians tend to have made conscious decisions about food and health and are more likely to exercise and eat less processed foods. If you compare a vegetarian with a carnivore that eats well and exercises, the difference is much less pronounced.

If you want to be a vegetarian on ethical grounds, that's up to you, and there's certainly an argument to be made that a vegetarian lifestyle is more sustainable (using less land and water, etc)

However, this isn't really relevant to this discussion. If I choose to eat tasty steaks, there's no risk to those around me of catching heart disease.

eoe said:

This will undoubtedly stir up a flame war, because it touches upon one of the forbidden topics, but what the hell:

Although there is, indeed, not a vaccination for heart diseases, a plant-based diet, across the board, in studies since, like, the 70s have shown that it basically heart-disease proofs you, not to mention diabetes.

Here's a long 53 minute video that goes over the basics, but the entire webpage has a little under 2,000 videos with a bunch of stats, papers, meta-studies, etc.

In a lot of ways, heart disease is very preventable, and even reversible in some cases, if you stop eating so much damn meat.

But, as stated above, "not eating meat" or "don't tell me what I can and cannot eat!" is up there with religion as far as topics that people get super-defensive about.

It's up you, truly, to determine what's more important: health or food deliciousness. And some people, knowingly, choose food deliciousness. And bless them. You make your own choices.

But also bless them for our ridiculous health care costs.

Coca Cola vs Coca Cola Zero - Sugar Test

ChaosEngine says...

The taste is subjective, but the sweeteners are in no way "far worse than sugar".

Coke Zero uses aspartame, and in and of itself, there's nothing wrong with aspartame. There are a bunch of bullshit conspiracy theories around it, but none of them have any solid science behind them.

That said, I don't drink any kind of soft drink anymore. If I'm thirsty, I drink water.

Soft drinks are just empty calories and frankly, if I want a tasty drink, I'll have beer, whiskey or wine. More enjoyable and at least that way I know what I'm drinking is bad for me

Sagemind said:

Yes, but Coke Zero tastes disgusting and what they use for sweeteners is far worse for you than sugar!
