Desi Lydic Foxsplains: Why Did Putin Invade Ukraine?

newtboy says...

Sorry if I’m being over sensitive….anything that seems to legitimize the bastardized definition of CRT, in my eyes, is buying into the intentional political ruse to paint any anti racism program, plan, or organization, even unpleasant history with the “CRT” label (and everyone knows CRT is the Devil), and I find that upsetting, even when it’s unintentional….maybe more so when it’s unintentional because that means the rebranding and improper conflation is working.

I think you know, CRT is an advanced law class taken by law students, not a racist movement to erase white people from history as the right claims, not a diabolical plan to make all white children self hating BLM activists, and it really irks me how successful the publicly admitted, intentional, blatantly racist scapegoating and misrepresentation has worked.

It seemed you were accepting the right wing definition even as you dismissed the (I assume anti) “CRT” movement by comparing it to unconstitutional anti German/foreign language laws in the past. Apologies if I misunderstood or came across as accusatory.

Holy fuck!
Remember Hillary?
Remember how she should be locked up for using a private server for digital copies of official government documents?

Uh oh….Trump not only also did exactly that, but he actually stole original (uncopied, with no digital copy) documents from the whitehouse, including but not limited to presidential records, personal notes, correspondence with foreign leaders, government records…. The national archive had to raid Maralago to retrieve what was left unincinerated (yes, he burned records that he stole from the whitehouse).
He allegedly actually ate some records in the Oval Office so they couldn’t be retrieved and put back together like so many were.
Another instance of Trump being ridiculously guilty of far more of the exact criminal activity that he asserted his opponent might commit and should definitely be executed for.

P.S. How about those jobs numbers!? Not the 300000 jobs lost Fox and co have been gleefully telegraphing for weeks, but nearly 500000 gained, and more people reentering the workforce thanks to a healthy economy! Thanks Biden!

On a personal note, Biden debt relief programs just erased $59k of student debt my mother in law has been paying off for nearly 50 years (she became severely ill and was out of work for years….twice, and all progress she had made paying it off was erased with penalties and interest). Thanks again Biden!

Oh no!
Good….Trump (likely) only has $93 million in liquid assets….1% of the 10 billion he’s claimed. None of his properties have shown a profit in at least two years, and they all are essentially owned by the banks that loaned him the money to buy them.
Better….he has $750 million in loan debts due in the next few years.
Best…. he also has between $100-$300 million in back taxes to pay or go to prison.

Sounds like Daddy Trump is going to be sleeping on your couch soon, he already spent all your political donations on defending his own criminal cases, and they’re all still moving forward. His lawyers are making arguments first year law students would laugh at, not actual defenses….and have bled both his and the RNCs coffers dry.
D’oh! Bad year to be a Trumpster.

Baltimore high schoolers math, reading at grade school level

newtboy says...

I know….let’s cut public school funding and let some parents take more with vouchers that partially pay for private schools many can’t afford. That will solve it. Just have those neglected students pick themselves up by their bootstraps and just do better. Problem solved.

Public schools are awful, but the solution isn’t to just defund them. The solution is simple….more, and better teachers, and real standards for grade advancement. That requires more money.

To be fair, I brought up IQ when Bob accused me of being “stupid as shit” before going on to mangle his next sentence.

The only thing I think IQ measures is problem solving ability. It is not a good indicator for future success, happiness, knowledge, experience, morality, or opportunities. Far from an end all measure, but it can be a decent measure of expected limitations in certain arenas. It would not surprise me to find out that the school I went to in Texas had fairly high minimum IQ score requirements. The classes were all accelerated and well above grade level, and I’m sure they wouldn’t accept a below average intelligence student and doom them to failure.
And yes, I understand there are numerous examples of IQ and biased testing being used to separate, subjugate, and denigrate groups of people….my school may have used them to deny many non white applicants….it was a prep school in Texas.

JiggaJonson said:

You know, the IQ test doesn't really measure anything useful, has crazy limitations, and often produces inaccurate and wildly variable results, right?

Not for lack of trying.

Trump didn’t steal the election…..

…..but he sure as fuck tried to, in dozens of illegal and unethical ways, and with 62 ridiculous lawsuits (in the hopes that his appointed judges would return the favor and appoint him president), and with a deadly coup… he’s still trying to. He just failed. Jesus fucking Christ, you ijit. Failing in your efforts to steal, getting caught, doesn’t erase the fact that you’re a thief. Duh.

Biden didn’t steal the election…he won by getting more votes, something Trump has never done, so it’s not surprising he thinks the person with fewer votes should win….but it’s pretty sad and 100% anti American that your ilk agree.

Trump has stolen at every turn from anyone involved with him his entire life, he (ghost) wrote books bragging about it, from routinely not paying contractors, using his position on boards to hire his own companies at exorbitant rates for jobs they often don’t do (but still get paid) bankrupting projects, creating projects designed to fall into bankruptcy after he strips the assets, stealing from students with his fraudulent university, stealing from veterans with his fraudulent charities, stealing from banks by inflating his assets then defaulting on loans intentionally, stealing from the US by tax fraud. Trump’s never had a business dealing where he didn’t screw over his investors by fraud or just outright theft.

Trump is a consummate thief, repeatedly convicted of or admitting fraud. Theft by fraud isn’t just theft, it’s theft compounded, often by horrifically destructive unpatriotic lies, that’s about as unethical as it gets.

🤦‍♂️

BTW, Trump has never won an election by getting more votes, since you forget.

Bob, they went on TV and said it. You don’t even have to read, just not hide your head in the sand…sadly that’s still too much to ask of you. God forbid you actually know what the party you blindly support is planning.

https://www.businessinsider.com/mcconnell-no-republican-legislative-agenda-before-2022-midterm-elections-2021-12

Historic Unemployment levels are way down. Historically negative GDP now up. My portfolio went up >25% in 6 months, under Trump it went down over 10% in 4 years. I have a diverse portfolio. Biden got serious funding for real infrastructure repair, not some vague promise of infrastructure week used as a distraction from innumerable scandals but never actually happening, not even for a week. Our international standing is on the rise after falling like a stone under Trump. Biden is doing fine…much better than Trump on his best day. Expectations are low with Republican obstruction a given and some “Democrats” being Republicans in practice.

Biden didn’t attempt a democracy ending coup. Trump did. That alone means Biden wins the “good job” medal 100-0.

Biden’s votes are all valid, Trump has dozens of voters caught voting more than once, and who knows how many not caught. There was voter fraud, 100% Republican voter fraud. How many senators won by cheating. If I used your (lack of any) metric, I would say every Republican representative is invalid and should be removed and jailed. D’oh!

Trump was a mess….an unmitigated failure at everything he tried. He inherited a healthy economy and nation, he left a recession, pandemic, and deep, DEEP division that already tried to destroy American democracy based on his lies.
Trump’s legacy is 3/4 million dead, economy in shambles, allies turning away, and the union crumbling…what you call an unmitigated success.

Edit: some light reading, since inflation is so important to you now…keep in mind the fed “created” over $4.5 trillion in 2020 alone to pay for Trump’s failures. (A dollar devaluation equating to 25% inflation long term)

GET LAMP: The Text Adventure Documentary

StukaFox says...

So this is absolutely true:

When I was 14, I wrote the (as far as I can determine) first parser-driven BBS in the world, basically creating the first purpose-driven, "multi-player" online adventure game, with the following caveats:

- Unis had such games themselves, but their access was limited to other university students and not the general public.

- It's also possible that someone else might have done the same thing before me, but I have never found any record of a such a BBS or online game existing prior to 1981.

The name of the BBS was 'New House of Wrath' and it featured a house that you explored via simple verb-noun syntax. Each room in the house was a BBS function (various text games which I wrote myself / a message base / a philez repository / a graffiti wall) as well as a simple underlying adventure in the style of Zork. The whole thing was written in sloppy TRS-DOS BASIC on a TRS-80 Model III and resided within 48k of memory including a primitive DB engine that I wrote. I still have a 8-pin dot-maxtrix print out of the code.

Shortly after my BBS went "online", a couple of multi-line BBSs sprung up, but these were straight BBSs without an overlying structure like mine.

At the time, I thought nothing of writing the BBS other than it was a fun thing to do. 80 Micro, the magazine that covered all things TRS-related, was going to write a story about my BBS, but nothing ever came of it. I ran it until about 1986 when I finally gave up because everyone was going to online service like Compu$erve and Prodigy.

I know I'll never get a single bit of credit for what I did, but I know what I did and I'm proud of my little contribution to the online world; that'll have to be enough.

New Rule: Words Matter | Real Time with Bill Maher (HBO)

newtboy says...

There’s a difference between “racist” and “biased”. IMO, that’s what Bill is saying.

(To be clear, the difference I’m standing on here is racist implies it intentionally targets one race, biased in this context means while it may inadvertently impact one group, that is not the intent.)

Standardized testing is biased towards those with better educational opportunities….not any particular race. It just so happens one “race” is far more likely to have fewer educational opportunities on average….but that’s not the test’s fault or design, nor the student’s, and is not MEANT to target anyone by race. It just measures what you know….what you’ve been taught.

When it comes to SATs, they don’t take into account the educational opportunities people may not have had, and so aren’t a great measure of a student’s ability to learn, but are a measure of what they’ve learned. As such, they are a good metric for colleges to use in admissions, but are also sorely lacking when it comes to identifying ability. That means they should not be the ONLY measure used in admissions, but are still a useful tool for colleges.

I’m all for color blind admissions, if they measure ability as well as wrote knowledge, finding a way to measure how well they made use of the opportunities to learn they were presented….no matter what their skin color or economic status. So far, I don’t believe any such measure exists.

Really, I’m all for free jr college for anyone. It’s cheap, $150 a semester the last time I went, probably double that now, still a bargain. Most people drop out before year 3, so that’s a great way to allow everyone the opportunity for higher education without the expense…and frees up 4 year colleges to eliminate year 1&2 and teach more people who might graduate.

bcglorf said:

@newtboy,

One of Mayers examples is calling out headlines about SAT's being inherently racist as false. Isn't that something you've told me you felt strongly about? I know we had discussion on including race in college admissions, and you against a race/color blind admission process as that was too pro-white. Seems it's not wrong on at least that point to say Maher's ruffling feathers with the left?

dahauns says...

@vil: Well, it's actually Bell herself that has a similar opinion:

https://jila.colorado.edu/~ajsh/astr2030_12/sn/Bell.html

It has been suggested that I should have had a part in the Nobel Prize awarded to Tony Hewish for the discovery of pulsars. There are several comments that I would like to make on this: First, demarcation disputes between supervisor and student are always difficult, probably impossible to resolve. Secondly, it is the supervisor who has the final responsibility for the success or failure of the project. We hear of cases where a supervisor blames his student for a failure, but we know that it is largely the fault of the supervisor. It seems only fair to me that he should benefit from the successes, too. Thirdly, I believe it would demean Nobel Prizes if they were awarded to research students, except in very exceptional cases, and I do not believe this is one of them. Finally, I am not myself upset about it – after all, I am in good company, am I not!

And that doesn't mean she was ignorant to the issue - she *did* tear the sexist media a new one, with gleeful wit:

When the paper was published the press descended, and when they discovered a woman was involved they descended even faster. I had my photograph taken standing on a bank, sitting on a bank, standing on a bank examining bogus records, sitting on a bank examining bogus records: one of them even had me running down the bank waving my arms in the air. Look happy dear, you've just made a Discovery! (Archimedes doesn't know what he missed!) Meanwhile the journalists were asking relevant questions like was I taller than or not quite as tall as Princess Margaret (we have quaint units of measurement in Britain) and how many boyfriends did I have at a time?

School Board Must Resign or be Charged With “Child Porn”

newtboy says...

The mayor is a bold faced liar abusing his civil authority to threaten a school board he doesn’t like with prison if they don’t quit.
That’s not how criminal law works. You can’t get out of child porn charges by quitting your board seat.
There’s absolutely no way in hell any judge confirmed that the worst possible interpretation of the facts rises to child pornography, nor that teachers or board members would be guilty if students wrote sexually explicit writings, which aren’t child pornography either.

No surprise…. @bobknight33 posted this, there was bound to be massive misrepresentation of the facts.

Anybody got some follow up? I hope this abusive threat isn’t successful. I’m going to guess that none of the parents there complaining have children in the advanced creative writing class, or they would have better sense.

School Board Must Resign or be Charged With “Child Porn”

spawnflagger jokingly says...

For those curious - this was the book of writing prompts:
https://www.amazon.com/Things-Write-Francisco-Writers-Grotto/dp/1452105448

And here's 100 of 642 of those prompts:
http://ryanjurewiczedu390.pbworks.com/f/WritingPrompts.pdf

This book was given to students in a college-credit creative writing class, and none of those 3-4 controversial prompts were assigned to students.

I would hazard to guess that even in Hudson, OH, most 17-18 year olds have already said and done things that their prude parents would cringe at.

Call the fireman, time to burn those books!
