Sound design on Transformers 2 was 100% original

therealblankman says...

I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but to my (not inexperienced) ears there was no subtlety nor artistry to any of the sound design in this movie. It was nothing but a constant overwhelming assault, overly compressed and turned up to 11.

Autechre - Clipper (7:54)

I know this is a very old argument, but goddamn they used to make some beautiful music.

The last, hell, 7+ years (?) they've become so glitch/nonsense-heavy to the point where each track on a new album is just yet more fairly boring, unreckognizable, dsp wankery, that's hard to discern from any other track from the last four albums they've released.

Sure, they'll do a great live show once in a while where they will kick the walls down and freak the place out with heavy bass, dirty and funky beats and out-of-this world sound design. And they obviously do have a few solid tunes from the last decade, but for the most part ae has fallen off the IDM cliff. Sad, innit.

do you work in the industry?

ok, the "please don't make the sound effects" part was pretty funny

Actors always make weird noises on set. I don't know why, but anytime they need to press something or move something (anything that doesn't have a physical sound but will have one added in post) they have to play on-set sound designer. My favorite thing they do is faking hit sounds during a fight sequence. They're adorable.

^So YOU have a list of a every single donor to Equality For All?
[edit] ps V - You're welcome.

Look maaaaaaan, "every single donor" to EFA didn't produce this video. It was Marc Shaiman, Will Ferrell, and Adam McKay (who own funnyordie). Jack Black and the others were called by them, and they agreed.

I wasn't "castigating" every lighting technician, grip and sound designer of this video, and either you know it and are just trying to 'win', or you don't and are making a fool of yourself.

Shaiman (who's idea this was, AFTER Nov 4th) has only contributed to this "protest" movement twice. Once in this video, and once to get Scott Eckern, the Artistic Director of the California Musical Theater (the state's biggest nonprofit musical theater company) fired.

So KP - I gave as much as most of these people, who are mostly obscenely wealthy. And I'm fucking skint. Wow, what heroes they are!!!

History of the Wilhelm Scream

spoco2 says...

I detest the Wilhelm scream. I detest it because it jars me out of whatever movie I'm watching, whatever escapism, and reminds me it's just a silly movie.

I also dislike the arrogance of them to say that it's something that no-one noticed unless they were in the business. I, and many others, do notice these things you know, they detract from the films. Grrr.

I upvote this for the historical notes, and the original recording, fascinating.

Oh, and just to mention, my MOST HATED sound in sound design is the kii-woosh sound that I mention in this other sift. It's used ALL THE DAMN time, and I hate, hate, hate it.

Scenes that Should Have the Wilhelm Scream

spoco2 says...

Upvoted only because I hope it makes people HATE the damn thing as much as me.

I SO Hate hearing it in movies, and I notice it pretty much any time it happens.

It's almost as bad as, well, it's a hard one to explain, it's a kind of (kii woosh) eplosiony sound thing that seems to be used far, far too much. It's hard to explain, it's used as a backdraft sound sometimes, and just all round explosion thing. I'll try and find an example of it. (AHAH, I remembered it from the intro to Magic Carpet from 1994 of all places... it's here at 3:22 (skip forward to it, terrible intro) It gets used EVERYWHERE and I hate, hate, hate it

Damn lazy sound designers, damn them to hell

Orchestral instruments built from a Ford Focus

Abducted says...

"Composer Craig Richey, sound designer Bill Milbrodt, and friends used a five-door Focus fresh from the factory floor, took it apart, then used the car's many parts to create 31 musical instruments. We're not talking flutes and trombones here, folks. The musical maestros used Focus parts to create such original works as a Rear Suspension Spike Fiddle and Door Harp." -audioporncentral.com

The music is real, the video is TV magic.

"Contact" intro--zooming out through time

budzos says...

The movie doesn't quite do the book justice, but it does a pretty good job of conveying all the important themes and ideas. It's very artistic and has amazing sound design. Hard to believe it's been more than ten years since it came out. Guess I'm getting old.

No Country For Old Men? (Cinema Talk Post)

youdiejoe says...

This is prob the best film in last 5 to 10 years as far as I'm concerned. The script, cast, cinematography, sound design and of course direction are spot on. I have recommended it to anyone that will listen.

No Country For Old Men - Coin Toss Scene

youdiejoe says...

This film is one of the few perfect films that exist. Top 10 all time, I hope I'm not over hyping this for those who haven't seen it, but really....this is film making at its finest, direction, script, acting, cinematography and sound design.
