Battlefield 3: In-game, gameplay footage (Part 2)

westy says...

graphics look nice but , to much shit bloom and contrast its like 90s games and lens flair all over again , also the actual game play shown so far looks utterly retarded and bland kind of thing that works well in a film but in a game just feels dead and robotic especially if your the type of player that likes to "play" a game thats presented as an open game but is in fact a linear on rails shooter.

With any luck the multilayer will be open like it was in bf 1942 , or the give modders the tools so people can make a good game of it instead of having something that plays like a shallow console shooter.

I dont have annything against console shooters , but the whole USP of Bf was big maps vehicular combat with time and space for tactics , Games like COD do the corador shooter stuff just fine.

Just hope this plays more like BF1942 and less like bad company , bf1943 on 360 was actualy quite good and seemed to mix the new stuff well with the old stuff.

but in llikelyhood this will turn out to be another dulled down pc game to make it work well for console , Ill defintly get it on day 1 Evan though bad company 2 was a bit dull compared to original bf games still a pretty solid game and at least the net-code works in the new frostbite engin, and im sure bf3 will be the same.

on final note , The sound is fantastic so at least they got that right 10 points to the sound designer lol actually more excited about the sound design than the rest of the game.

Zero Punctuation: Dead Space 2

This game was a disaster. What a waste of $60. Stupid story, no genuine terror aside from jump scares, sluggish controls, poor collision detection, terrible facial animation, linear, lacking in variety, lacking in bosses... The formula of the game is 1) enter a room 2) fight off 3-5 waves of enemies 3) wait 10 seconds for the door to the next room to open 4) yawn 5) repeat.

Unlike Yahtzee, I really dug DS1. It was scary because you were alone and underpowered. In this game, you are Rambo and there are NPC's everywhere. In the first game, the sound design gave you subtle distant growls to let you know monsters may strike at any moment. In this game, a bombastic soundtrack beats you over the head any time a monster is about to strike. I actually played a good portion of the game without sound, listening to my ipod. In the first game, you are this Gordon Freeman style silent, solitary figure who only reveals his face at the end. In this one, your annoying character talks and shows his poorly animated face constantly.

The multiplayer is also a mess. It's a hackneyed, poorly thought out rip off of Left 4 Dead. (Valve really should make a Left 4 Dead in space game) Not only is the multiplayer horrible, but you need an EA license to play it, which means that whoever buys my used copy is going to have to pony up even more money to EA. Fuckers.

A good Audio Editor? Suggestions please. (Art Talk Post)

Cubase, Logic, Digital Performer and Pro Tools are common, popular pro digital audio workstations. They all cost several hundreds of dollars and are fairly complicated to use, especially if you are new to digital audio. Cubase and Logic seem to be popular in the remix/electronic music scene. Digital Performer is popular among film composers. Pro Tools is a popular choice for TV/Film sound design and mixing. I use Digital Performer and like it a lot. It's slick and powerful.

There are cheaper, simpler options out there. I believe Apple's 'Garage Band' is to music editing, what 'iMovie' is to video editing, though I've never tried it.

Hi Zonbie,
Thanks for the heads-up! Turns out I can't dupeof it because I would be duping to my original. There to prevent abuse, I guess. Maybe if you do the dupeof to mine, I can second it?

The Most Terrifying Video Game Ever

shagen454 says...

The invisible splashing water monster was genius. I had to replay that segment a few times, it was terrifying me so much I had to take off my headphones to progress. I was freaking out. The sound design (field recorded sound) is absolutely terrific. A little too terrific at points maybe.

There is nothing like being beside some grotesque being and slowly melting away in the darkness trying not to look at it. Sends chills down my spine. The crucial part is that they use the monster device very minimally. This game has serious game design class.

Tron legacy: New trailer

spoco2 says...

I don't get how anyone can look at 'young Flynn' and not think he looks terrible, like CG from 10 years ago, the mouth movements are an abomination. Even just in the still shot it has as the thumbnail up there, he looks terrible.

Now, if you can watch a film with a CG character that looks the bad and not wince, then I may envy you in some regards, but I can't, I hate it, and it really has dampened my enthusiasm for the film. The sound design and the look was really spot on and I just loved it up until that point.

*sigh*

*small weep*

I really hope that his poor look is on purpose or they fix it before release, as it's really going to jar me out of the movie if it isn't.

The Wilhelm Scream in its original context

spoco2 says...

Ah Wilhelm, how I hate thee.

I know it's like a sound designer's 'in gag', but man it shits me when I hear it, especially in a 'serious' film, takes me right out of the moment.

Grr
