Tesla Model S driver sleeping at the wheel on Autopilot
Probably fake, but the technology is absolutely mature enough.
Self-driving cars are a solved problem. It's a matter of regulation, not research at this point.
In fact, once they reach critical mass, the problem actually becomes a lot easier from a technological standpoint. If all the cars on the road are AI, their behaviour becomes much more predictable, and a highway full of self-driving cars could easily communicate with each other, allowing increased traffic flow and reducing accidents.
Think about a simple scenario right now. You're driving in the fast lane on a multilane highway and your exit is coming up in a km or two. You need to cross 3 lanes, so you indicate and wait for a safe gap. You're completely dependent on the drivers in the other lane to let you in. But human nature being what it is, they might not want to let you in. Even if the first lane lets you through, the outer lanes have no idea what you want until they see you, so you have to repeat this manoeuvre a few times.
But with a highway of self-driving cars? Your car broadcasts its intentions on a localised network, and the other cars create a gap all the way to the exit. You move through and traffic resumes.

Self-Driving Cars Are Coming Right For Us
I'm pretty sure self driving vehicles are going to be killed off by the legal responsibilty problem.
If you're the only person in your self driving car, and it runs a little old lady over, who's at fault? If you're still going to be at fault, because it's your car, then people won't buy them in any great numbers. If you have to be just as attentive even though you have no control, people won't buy them.
I see self-correcting cars being popular. The car that decides "oh, you're an idiot, I'm gonna save you" and then does so.

Or in winter.
I assume the car will prompt you to take over when it doesn't know what to do. Fully self driving cars are probably many many years away.
I wonder how these autopilot cars will handle non-marked roads?
Like for example, if you're driving along, and there's roadworks, and all of a sudden there are no lines, will the sensors be able to figure out where to go?

With self-driving cars, maybe pedestrians will regain their right of way.
Some men just want to watch the world burn.
It is wrong.
Self driving cars are being programmed to get out of the way of emergency vehicles and break the speed limit or other minor traffic infringements where they judge it is safe to do so in order to get out of the way. Still plenty of work to be done, but this kind of obstinance is still better explained as human assholery.
I hope that's wrong, or that they fix that before they're commonplace. They should be able to pull slowly to the curb at least, if not turn right on red to get out of the way. Stopping dead in the middle of the lane will NOT work in emergency situations.
Some men just want to watch the world burn.
From what I understand, the self driving cars will do exactly this. They will not, under any circumstances, knowingly go against traffic signals. Then when they recognize the firetruck behind them, they will wait until it passes.
You have just come up with a possible reason for this video, that's a test car.
I can't wait for self driving cars to be mandatory on public roads.

yeah maybe. i dunno, i've seen people just freeze like a deer in the headlights whenever something unusual happens on the road.
Literally last night we pulled up as an accident had occurred ahead of us, and for the next five minutes the number of people who blasted past a line of stopped cars all with their hazards on and full headlight beams illuminating the crash site and so on, was staggering. Last minute they'd realize that yes, there's a car blocking one lane and facing the wrong way all smashed to bits and yes, there's glass and oil on the road. One after anouther they'd slam on the brakes, almost hit it, then almost get rear ended.
People drive with total tunnel vision i think. It's kinda scary how little awareness some people have. On the other hand maybe they're an asshole. hard to say.

Except a bus doesn't go where you want to go, it goes where it wants to go and you have to hope where it wants to go is somewhere near where you want to go.
And that's if the damn thing wants to go somewhere near to where you live so you can hitch a ride with it in the first place.
And all this at times that it chooses. Yeah, not much like a self-driving car. :-D
This is what I imagine the future of transport will be like - I get in my electric vehicle in the morning, and sit down as it takes off toward the destination I want to go. I spend the ride checking email, listening to music, or just relaxing, as the correct route is dynamically updated to avoid construction, traffic jams, etc. At the end of the journey that's cost me very little, gotten me safely to my destination, and had minimal environmental impact, my vehicle moves on to pick up other passengers BECAUSE IT'S A GODDAMN BUS AND BUSES HAVE ALWAYS WORKED LIKE THIS.

I suppose it depends on how/where you drive. My driving is split between commuting to work (~30-40mins) and long journeys (2-5 hours).
My main use case for a self-driving car is bringing me home from the pub. Not because I'm wasted, I simply don't drive after more than 1 or 2 beers.
When I'm going on a long trip, it's usually around the south island and I love driving those trips.

Come on, nobody's going to be working - they'll be playing holographic Candy Crush. Also, I for one would be happy with just the long motorway segments being automated.
