The Tragedy of Jon Stewart

Stormsinger says...

You forget that Bob's one of the Foxnews wingnuts. He wouldn't know real news if it fucking bit him. When all you watch is fictional propaganda, then of course comedy and satire seem like just another flavor. All that matters in his view is the end slant...if it's "for" the GOP, then it's good, otherwise it's a lie.

Sure...except it's not true. They ridicule made up news, they don't make it up themselves. They are comedy shows, not news.
Fail.

Kellywise - SNL

JiggaJonson says...

This wasn't laugh out loud funny, but the satire was SPOT ON.

Even though I hate Kenan Thompson in almost everything he does, enough for me to mention it almost unprovoked here as his role is small, he doesn't ruin the bit either.

Timely w/ the IT movie out recently and enough ppl have seen it now, etc.

I still didn't laugh out loud, but I appreciated this like I appreciate A Modest Proposal. Worthy of some clapping.

The Free Speech Debate

Donald Trump's newest senior adviser: Locutus of Borg

Sniper007 says...

I'm very confused. When did the satire begin? I thought it was a cleverly edited SNL skit up until the borg clip. Do you mean to tell me that the borg clip was the ONLY edit?

I sincerely thought the half bald guy was some comedian. I'm not even trying to be ironic right now...

Pissing off shitty white people - Liberal Redneck

kceaton1 says...

Knowing Trump and company, Obama as his last act in office will have to use his Presidential Powers to pardon himself, "just in case".

That is totally a satirical comment; it's why I hit the button!

"The arrests and reports of assault follow last month's Supreme Court ruling that the national anthem be played before every film and that audiences stand while it is played - and they make it clear that authorities are taking the ruling seriously."

Dafuq?! I went through the chain of sources and related articles, and it really doesn't seem to be satire. Again, dafuq?!

If 'Djent' Was Added To The Oxford Dictionary

shagen454 says...

Haha that guy is hilarious. I do believe the origin of "djent" was Meshuggah. But, this style that he does for the video actually reminds me of a comedy group from the 90's called "Jud Jud". Jud Jud used to make mouth noises to satirize toughguystraight edge hardcore groups like Earth Crisis and had a few releases on uber punk label No Idea Records.

... and one more for good measure: The Fury and Failure of Donald Trump by Matt Taibbi

Hell of a zinger right at the start:
"Keeping up with Trump revelations is exhausting. By late October, he'll be caught whacking it outside a nunnery. There are not many places left for this thing to go that don't involve kids or cannibalism. We wait, miserably, for the dong shot."

And it only gets better:
"Trump's early rampage through the Republican field made literary sense. It was classic farce. He was the lewd, unwelcome guest who horrified priggish, decent society, a theme that has mesmerized audiences for centuries, from Vanity Fair to The Government Inspector to (closer to home) Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. When you let a hands-y, drunken slob loose at an aristocrats' ball, the satirical power of the story comes from the aristocrats deserving what comes next. And nothing has ever deserved a comeuppance quite like the American presidential electoral process, which had become as exclusive and cut off from the people as a tsarist shooting party."

A Woman's Guide to Woodworking - Building an End Table

transmorpher says...

I got the feeling that she's just an actor in a satire video, not an actual carpenter....

I think she got help making that. Not to sound dismissive or anything, but I think that was beyond her. Probably had her mom help.

Satanist leads prayer at Pensacola council meeting

Wonderful!

When you finally get people to realise how absurd satire is, they're one step closer to realising how absurd the original idea was.

Watch out for curses bob!

Russell Howard On Jesus

transmorpher says...

Stuart Lee is exactly the thing I'm talking about. I'm not saying that you SHOULD make fun of muslims or islam just to arbitrarily balance things out. I'm saying that you simply can't, or else.

Because when someone makes a joke or a cartoon, people get beheaded, cartoonists get shot with AK-47's, riots ensue, and clerics wish death on people. And at the very least people start yelling "racist".

I don't agree that the clip I've posted is satirizing the situation. He's pointing out that he knows what would happen if he did make a joke about it. The joke being "I'm not that stupid to do that".

ChaosEngine said:

Maybe you're terrified. I'm really not that concerned and the clip you posted is actually satirising that very attitude.

I accidentally posted the wrong Dara O'Briain clip, but please watch the edited one (it's very funny and relevant).

Here's Stewart Lee on the same topic

Bill Maher: Who Needs Guns?

ChaosEngine says...

Sorry if I offended your delicate sensibilities. Given that you responded with an obvious satire (gardens are illegal in NZ), I assumed you weren't being 100% serious either.

Apologies for bringing facts into this discussion.

Damn, there's that sarcasm again.

@ChaosEngine

Sorry, I mistook you for someone who wanted to have a reasoned discussion about how the U.S. got here and where it can go from here, not someone just looking to score Internet sarcasm points. Good luck making a positive change in people's attitudes with that method.

Bill Maher: Who Needs Guns?

ChaosEngine says...

To address your points

"Did you even read the article I linked?"
Sorry, I didn't. I opened it, but I really don't have time to read a 40-page law review article.

"In other words, you're flat out wrong when you say the 2nd amendment wasn't about self-defense".
Ok, we can agree to disagree there, but the point still stands that the statement "The WHOLE point of the second amendment... is so we can defend ourselves" (emphasis mine) is incorrect. I'll grant you it might be PART of it.

"I'm not sure why your tone is so dismissive in this thread."
Because I'm tired of trying to convince Americans to stop murdering each other.

"you're quite lucky to live in a country where your government protects you from growing your own food by throwing all those dangerous gardeners in prison. "
Please tell me you realise that's satire because your tone kinda makes me think you're taking that seriously. No, gardens are not illegal in NZ. Almost everyone I know grows some of their own food (at least, those of us lucky enough to afford a house with a garden).

"New Zealand has a shit-ton of guns (about one for every four people)"
Agreed. I even previously brought this up myself.

"people own them for a variety of reasons, from sport"
I know, I have friends who target shoot and hunt

"to self-defense"
cue wrong buzzer sound effect.

To get a gun in NZ you need a Firearms licence. To get this , you will be interviewed, and

You will have difficulty being deemed 'fit and proper' to possess or use firearms if you have:
...
indicated an intent to use a firearm for self-defence.

Have some people (shock, horror) lied to the cops to get a licence? Probably, but in general, no-one here actually wants a gun for self-defense.

Look, I have no problem with people using guns. I just think that maybe you could all stop fetishising them so much and realise that you live in the 21st century and not the old west.

Personally, I'm with Jim Jeffries on this one.

John Oliver does satire and deadpan amazingly well.

But he just can't do "wacky", it just doesn't work for him. His voice goes up and he turns to the graphics and says something like "No johnny, your parents actually hate you" or whatever and it just falls flat every. goddamn. time.

RFlagg said:
