Handcrafting Mehrunes' Razor

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Donald Trump

heropsycho says...

The problem is that sets up what reminds me of the 2000 election. It absolutely astounded me half the country thought George W. Bush was a valid candidate, let alone the better candidate than Al Gore, not that I liked Gore, but given the choice between the two, Gore had viable plans for the budget, a cohesive foreign policy, etc.

It shouldn't have been a close election, but not only was it razor close, Gore lost. Countless times there have been in world history leaders who came about who generally wouldn't and shouldn't have, but they did. All it takes is a bad recession or other event to tilt the odds in their favor at the right time. Hitler doesn't come to power without the Great Depression and the Treaty of Versailles leaving Germany dependent on US loans.

And to me, Trump is absolutely frightening. I honestly have absolutely no idea what he would do as President, and not in a good way. I quite honestly don't even know if he's actually in line with the Tea Party or not. It is terrifying to me that he's on a course where potentially a recession at the wrong time could make him president because so many voters are absolutely ignorant or stupid enough to support him.

Screw the entertainment value of it. I keep thinking back to the George W. Bush Iraqi occupation and the crapshow that was Katrina and realize people's lives are literally at stake by botching the selection of the next President, and when you make one option completely invalid before the election even starts, it doesn't help.

Part of me wants Clinton vs Drumpf for the pure entertainment value. Just imagine all the skeletons buried in that chest of emails on HRC's server and how Drumpf would slap her silly with it.

B.o.B. Flatline featuring NDGT - Flat Earth Rap

ChaosEngine says...

I feel your pain, brother. I honestly tried to watch it. Maybe he actually has a reasoned argument, I thought.

I lasted 3 minutes and then I realised that my brain was attempting to kill me for subjecting it to this. So I switched off the video and put down the razor.

Ball Lightning Filmed

AeroMechanical says...

Could it be a standard cloud to cloud arc but seen end on so that it appears ball-like? I know that the existence of "ball" lightning is disputed, and to me the end-on-view seems the simplest explanation, so Occam's razor and all that.

Everyday People React To Being Called Beautiful

JustSaying says...

Let me get this straight: cutting people because they gave you a compliment is inappropriate?
Well, shit. Not only do I not get any compliments, on top of that I'm carrying a razor around for nothing!
Stupid feel good videos.

Rose McIver's Sick Magic Trick Pisses Off Jimmy Kimmel

lucky760 says...

One word: pshaw.

No, silly. The basis of most all magic tricks hinges entirely on doing very complicated things or using very complicated special props.

Using Occam's Razor the selected answer would be: Rose McIver is really doing magic. That's simpler than "Jimmy Kimmel is a horny old man and he wants to beg this C-list TV show actress to do him the favor of being on his show at some future point because he has to bribe low-level actors to do that (as if that's how Hollywood works), so he got prepped on what card to select then rehearsed being surprised when she selected his card" and that's way simpler than "she has a trick deck that's laid out in a special way and requires you to memorize suits and numbers and pulling apart cards without giving it away."

Nonsense.

Probably had to go along with it to get her to agree to read Mean Tweets at some point in the future.

That's always the easy, go-to answer, but not how every trick is performed.

I significantly doubt Jimmy would ever go along with a "pretend to be surprised" magic trick. (He's not that type of guy/host, unlike the other late-night Jimmy who pretends [very poorly] to be surprised by everything he plans in advance.)

Huge Great White Close Up

Man Stuns Family By Shaving Off His Beard After 14 Years

Asmo says...

I went down to a number 1 razor beard trim once so my wife could see what it did to the shape of my face (basically stubble).

The words "Never again" and "Holy shit" came out more than a few times.

I keep my beard on because it softens my face, without it I look a bit younger, but my chin leaves me looking kinda harsh (my neutral expression goes from "bored" to "angry" imo).

Is reality real? Call of Duty May Have the Answer

GenjiKilpatrick says...

@robdot

You're either trollin' or just real thick.

Yes, the simulation could in start an arbitrary place.
Yes, the devs could pre-programmed our knowledge of historical events.

That's besides the point, you're missing the point.

One philosophical tool we humans use to analyze the world is called - Occam's Razor.

Meaning, hypotheses that are overly complex should be simplified to their bare minimum in order to draw the best conclusions.

You COULD make a simulation with pre-programmed historical events.. and procedurally generated galaxies..

but that's even complex than simply setting up a few simple rules and variables.. and letting that simulation play out.

THE EVEN MORE GLARINGLY POINT THAT YOU KEEP GLOSSING OVER is..

It's much more likely that any civilization advance enough to create such simulations...

Would probably be extinct or too busy living in utopia to do so.

AGAIN, a point the author of the video concede MANY times.
