Student / Teacher debate on Gender Wage Gap

newtboy says...

When the student is so misinformed, there's nothing to compliment. This appears to be a debate class, so not capitulating is a requirement.
Women who work don't work only 75% as much as men, they actually tend to not take sick days or vacations at the same rate as men so often work more, and are paid around $.75 for the same work men are paid $1 for. They are also more likely to be offered only 35-39 hours a week, not because they want it that way but to screw them out of benefits.

For example, my wife heads her department. She hired an untrained subordinate, and he was hired at the same hourly pay rate she was earning, even though she was his boss with 10+ years superiority. Her next hire was a woman who had some experience, and was hired at $4 an hour less and does a better job. She does not have a say in their pay rates.
It's been the same everywhere she's worked.

I think that guy might be a high sloop, but he's not quite a schooner, high or otherwise.

It was good to see high schooners debate this. Most kids would seem to back down from the authority of a Teacher.

To sum this up On average Woman work 25%less and make 25%less than men.

The best parodies are the ones where you 're still not quite sure if they're serious.

Unfortunately here it's obvious that that second cut isn't at 36 degrees, so the illusion is dispelled.

Cavuto: How does it feel to be dismissed, CNN?

newtboy says...

Verifiability untrue. Any way you look at it shows Faux is king of biased opinion and conjecture masquerading as news. The others are trying to catch up.
That said, I defy you to show what they reported that was untrue in this last case involving the Trump blackmail material. They reported on a briefing that included charges of blackmail against the president elect( *electorally). That briefing absolutely exists. Where's the lie, Bob, where exactly is the lie?

I agree, SOME media outlets are clearly biased for the dems, just as some are for the republicans.

I listed a number of fake Clinton stories Faux repeated, you addressed none. Where's the witty retort? Cat got your tongue?

I also mentioned Bernie, and Clinton's unfavorability. No wonder you can't understand my arguments, you don't seem to have read them.

So then, Faux is not news media, nor is right wing radio, newspapers, or websites? Glad you've come around.
Yes, most mainstream media got it as wrong as the democrats. They clearly suck ass, just not quite as hard or deep as Faux....not for lack of effort.

No media is worse than MSNBC and CNN. King of the lie.
Dont forget Dan Rather of CBS -- FAKE news right before the Bush election -- and he got caught and "let" go. Shameful..

Try as you might you can not deny truth. The media is in the tank for Democrats.

Trump will handle them like a BOSS.

Fake Clinton news?? what?? what child slavery.. how about how she screwed Bernie ???
How she was such a poor candidate that she had no trust with the American people??

But the Media and all the leftest was darn sure she would win.. Even up to 10pm election night.. Then the real results pored in and wiped their smug smiles right off their face.

If your New Year's resolution is to quit smoking...

Payback says...

Everytime I see one of these "bus stop" commercials I'm 100% certain that:

1) they truthfully do put in the exact technology they say they do.
2) they never intend for it to work properly, if at all.
3) there's someone pressing a button nearby.
4) once they're finished filming, it all gets taken away.

I'm not QUITE to believing every smoker filmed was a plant, but I'm close.

ChaosEngine said:

I'm skeptical.

First up, I find it unlikely that a smoke detector would work that well outdoors at that distance.

Second, as evidenced by the comments above, I'm not sure this kind of finger-wagging actually dissuades smokers.

Pokemon Sparks Stampede in Taipei

poolcleaner says...

From experience, there is no map in the game, but there are various third party apps available that people use to pinpoint rare pokemon. It is against the terms of service to use these third party sites, so many people avoid them and just follow wherever the crowd goes -- or whomever they believe has an accurate map location and can prove it. Or the person running the fastest and with their phone in hand, excited about catching a pokemon.

Interesting thing to note is this: Sometimes the crowd is following a troll who uses a screenshot of a past rare pokemon in a location where there is no pokemon, causing a stampede of people who will end up wandering and wandering to no where at all.

It's quite sad... and funny.

So if you want to be an epic, EPIC, MOTHERFUCKING real life stampede creating TROLL, just go to locations where people play pokemon and pretend you know where rare pokemon are.

However... I did see someone get punched in the face after trolling someone, so... you may wish to vacate the area after trolling 1,000 real life humans in real life. Not quite just a game in that respect.

You may also wish to be a good actor and understand the concept of the game better than most non-players so that you can effectively troll people. Obvious trolls troll no one. Good trolls troll the fucking world.

Your Brain On Ayahuasca: The Hallucinogenic Drug

artician says...

I'm supposed to be attending an Ayahuasca ceremony in a few weeks. I think the 'not quite pleasurable' element is why it's treated more as a ceremonial/religious/disciplinary practice, than a recreational experience, but people continue to use it due to the side-effects being beneficial in that way too (not many recreational drugs can 'reset' your mind to a healthier way of thinking the way Ayahuasca purportedly does).

Auto Lending: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

Mordhaus says...

In the first place as to the house they had bought, it was not new at all, as they had supposed; it was about fifteen years old, and there was nothing new upon it but the paint, which was so bad that it needed to be put on new every year or two. The house was one of a whole row that was built by a company which existed to make money by swindling poor people. The family had paid fifteen hundred dollars for it, and it had not cost the builders five hundred, when it was new. Grandmother Majauszkiene knew that because her son belonged to a political organization with a contractor who put up exactly such houses. They used the very flimsiest and cheapest material; they built the houses a dozen at a time, and they cared about nothing at all except the outside shine. The family could take her word as to the trouble they would have, for she had been through it all--she and her son had bought their house in exactly the same way. They had fooled the company, however, for her son was a skilled man, who made as high as a hundred dollars a month, and as he had had sense enough not to marry, they had been able to pay for the house.

Grandmother Majauszkiene saw that her friends were puzzled at this remark; they did not quite see how paying for the house was "fooling the company." Evidently they were very inexperienced. Cheap as the houses were, they were sold with the idea that the people who bought them would not be able to pay for them. When they failed--if it were only by a single month-- they would lose the house and all that they had paid on it, and then the company would sell it over again. And did they often get a chance to do that? Dieve! (Grandmother Majauszkiene raised her hands.) They did it--how often no one could say, but certainly more than half of the time. They might ask any one who knew anything at all about Packingtown as to that; she had been living here ever since this house was built, and she could tell them all about it. And had it ever been sold before? Susimilkie! Why, since it had been built, no less than four families that their informant could name had tried to buy it and failed. She would tell them a little about it.

The New Wave of YouTube "Skeptics"

Imagoamin says...

Then you haven't encountered any of his fans on twitter.

And he is pretty much the largest and most 1:1 example the above video is referencing: He uses specious arguments, focuses on minor details or extreme examples to paint with a massive brush, and generally is more vitriol than skepticism.

And the difference between Sarkeesian making videos critiquing and thunderf00t is myriad: Sarkeesian focuses on depictions and media, thunderf00t focuses on indviduals and a very amorphous idea of "feminism" with videos like "Why feminism is poisoning atheism", "Why 'feminism' poisons EVERYTHING", all pretty much completely obsessed with Sarkeesian and Rebecca Watson.

That's not skepticism.. that's a creepy personal vendetta.

The other major difference are their fans. I don't recall Sarkeesian ever taking out a personal vendetta against a random person and suggesting her fans bombard their business on Yelp with bad reviews and then people on the doxxing boards of 8chan joined in the online attacks.

I mean, it's not quite as simple as "one person makes videos critiquing, another makes videos critiquing". But I feel like you probably already knew that.

Why look for that excuse? I think the word you are looking for is 'validation'. I think it's really human nature that compels us to search out those who we see as being like us and helps to reaffirm our beliefs. Fox News became a media empire based almost entirely on this principle and ever since then many other media outlets have followed suit.

@Imagoamin
I read that article a little while back, but I'm not sure taking away Patreon or ad money would silence those people. I'm pretty sure many like thunderf00t would just keep on doing what they're doing anyhow. I've watched some of thunderf00t's videos and while they may not use the most genteel language or may come off as snarky but it never sounded like harassment to me.

YouTube, and the internet in general are a soapbox which people like Anita Sarkeesian can use to criticize popular media and can also be used by others to criticize Sarkeesian in turn, this is perfectly fair in my opinion.

Ecuador's Got Talent Bullies 16 Yr Old Atheist

Close, but not quite. Read it again.

"Due to the position taken by actress Maria Fernanda Rios during various interactions on the show, which are not in line with those of the channel, she will no longer have screen presence and her contract will be terminated at the end of the series."

The judge is not going to have her contract renewed AFTER THE END OF THE SERIES. Not even at the end of this season, so she wasn't fired at all, and not a thing happened to the other judges, or the announcer that all joined in. At least they (allegedly) took her off camera, but apparently she's still working with them off screen as long as they exist as a show.
