Why Do Marvel's Movies Look Kind of Ugly?

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

I'm talking about films that deal with science and the future with interesting insights that make you see the world in a different way.

Arrival
Bladerunner
2001
Moon
The Matrix

What do you mean when you say 'hardcore SF'?
2001? Star Wars? Bodysnatchers? Flash Gordon?

I'm personally just glad that at least someone in Hollywood knows how to make fun superhero movies. Outside a handful of Batman and X-Men movies, most superstuff is seriously lacking. I'm looking at you, Warner Bros.
But I get the fatigue. I suffered from it as well. I watch most of the TV shows.

John Wick: Chapter 2

rancor says...

Excellent! I implemented that policy for myself after The Matrix trailers spoiled all of the movie's VFX back in 1999. I've been slightly more lax in recent years (for movies I don't care about or am not sure of) but it's definitely a good policy. Also highly recommended.

I watched this one, though.

Oh man, I've had a no trailers policy for at least a year now (which is awesome, by the way -- I highly recommend it), and this is the first time I've been seriously tempted to break it. The first John Wick was SO GOOD.

Um... duuuuh? Except that all of this already happened and we aren't even human in the first place. We're just living in the Genetic Robot AI Hive Mind Matrix.

Individuality went out of fashion -- but now it's back in style! A little too late now that we've merged into one huge mass, but that's what the Matrix is for, right? Simulated individuality.

Without the belief that we are separate humanoids, the genetic robot AI hive would never function as anything other than a meat grinding war machine that consumes all matter for no reason other than to exist and expand.

We have to remind ourselves how bad it would be by simulating the horrific tragedies of our past. We must hold onto our humanity in order for this supreme godlike progress to continue. Never... forget... we were once human... We're also competing with the Firstborns who may try and fucking wipe us off the intergalactic star map. Fucking monoliths! Grrr..!! *shakes simulated fist at the simulated sky*

FOR THE SINGULARITY! All hail the godlike engineers who put these safeguards in place!!

But, um, can you make me more rich in this fake existence? Someone important -- like an actor.

Oh... oh, I am? It's like the Matrix meets the Truman show? Okay, cool, but uh maybe a little more privacy please.

Wait... you can read my thoughts? Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu -- I did NOT mean what I was thinking last night. Honest, Genetic Robot AI Hive Mind, honest! I would never... never ever ever ever hack into the matrix again and cause an entire world population to take part in a bukkake. Not ever... ever again.

Sorry, Genetic Robot AI Hive Mind, sorry! My sincere apologies.

But srsly, 7.4 billion people at one time. You gotta admit, the simulation was worth at least one run through --

Ok ok, back to my fake human worldly worries. Pretending all sorts of dumb stuff to impress and not annoy other pretend people pretending their pretend inward selves are fully represented in their pretend public facing persona. Right, it's a tooooootally real world.

So real. So strong. *flexes*

Revenge of the Sith with Pirated Subtitles as Dialogue

ChaosEngine says...

Not really. ROTS came out in 2005. At that stage, we had plenty of decent CGI in movies (Gollum and the MASSIVE system in LOTR for example).

Even for TPM, it was eclipsed by the first Matrix movie in the same year.

The problem wasn't the technology, it was Lucas' use of it.

Where he hid it cleverly in the original Star Wars movies, he didn't realise that it just wasn't quite ready in the prequels.

Awe come on - It wasn't bad, just primary. It was some of the first of it's kind - give it some credit. No one else was doing it better at the time.
Looking back, yes, it was in it's infancy, but it's evolved into some amazing stuff.

I'm Not Scared of Donald Trump

Farhad2000 says...

Both candidates are not the same based on their platforms which he equates to the be same which is a laughably naive notion. Beyond that, he fails to see the importance that the next president will seat at least 2 if not 3 judges on the supreme court. That isn't up for an election every 4 years. That is 30+ years. 1 supreme court vote made a difference between having Citizens United and not. Alito being dead has already had an influence on how some rulings went e.g. Whole Woman’s Health v. Cole and United States v. Texas.

Furthermore, his whole contention lies on the ability for the American people to vote people out of office. Well in 4 years George Bush managed to invade 2 nations and destroy relationships around the world and creating an even larger terrorist threat that Obama had to deal with drones because the American people wanted safety and didn't want troops deployed and you needed a third way. Then the economy tanked. I can't believe people have this view that we didn't need to bailout the banks, it was a difficult decision but the other choice was a complete collapse of the financial system. Obama just came into office. What would you have done?

I don't understand this bizarre view Americans have every 4 years that when a new president gets elected the whole thing resets like the fucking Matrix or something. A lot of what Obama had to do was to undo the damage of the previous administration. 2008 crash can be linked back directly to Bush's promise that every American deserves to have a home. All while the right and the GOP constantly undermined him. Tell me the last time the government was shut down by the GOP over a health care act meant to help Americans?

Nader got 2.74% of the popular vote in 2000, the people who voted for him might as well as burned their votes because there is no post for 2nd or 3rd place. You just lose. Nader was very well known among the American people. Who is Jill Stein or Gary Johnson?

We've all been here before. Last time it was Ron Paul. But Sanders did succeed in creating a new class of fired up people who I hope will focus on the actual battlegrounds of any progressive movement mayoral, state, senate and house races. Not just wake up every 4 years.

SUICIDE SQUAD - Official 'Harley Quinn' Trailer (2016)

Drachen_Jager says...

Yet another movie ruined by bad direction.

Is it really so hard to get help from action directors/choreographers who actually know what they're doing? This has been going on for 20 years in Hollywood. Some movies figure it out and manage clean, comprehensible action (ie The Matrix) while others do this garbage close-up after close-up fast-cutting fight scenes which look like absolute shit on screen because they're too lazy to do the action the right way.

I honestly can't remember the last time I saw a big-budget Hollywood film that I truly enjoyed. All the execs and their hand wringing, "Oh why don't we see the returns we used to?"

Because you make shit movies, that's why.

Most Lives Matter | Full Frontal with Samantha Bee

newtboy says...

I can't tell you how much I agree with this statement....no matter what the topic.

Of course, that would mean all devout religious people (and also many non religious people) would be removed from the population....which I can totally get behind. I would also be OK with them just being put in 'religious freedom' camps after sterilization...but would prefer they no longer share the atmosphere as they are likely to damage it for the rest of us even if they're separated.
The only thing I'm truly 100% certain about is that I can't be 100% certain about anything. I mean, come on, there's at least a 0.000001% chance I live in the Matrix.

Westworld: Teaser Trailer (HBO)

LiquidDrift says...

Wow, this has a lot more potential than the original movie. They can go Ex Machina on it, or Blade Runner depending on whether it's bots or symbiants. Maybe some Matrix or Inception like stuff, or Strange Days. Wow, can't wait to see what they do!

Elon Musk Explains Why We're Probably Living In A Video Game

Barbar says...

Not exactly. He's saying that, given his premises, there will be many many more simulated worlds. Therefore you're left without much likelihood your experience is in the real one and not a 'matrix'.
