Scientology: Spreading shit for over 50 years

holymackerel013 says...

So, was that a Scientologist dumping manure at the feet of those protesters? It seems to me that if that one guy had not stepped back then he would have had his teeth (or probably worse) knocked out. The person driving the front-end loader seemed to be driving very aggressively....I've worked construction before and if someone drove that HUGE piece of equipment up on me like that on purpose, I'd be kicking his ass. I would not be laughing if I was there. They should have called the police and showed them that video.

Judge Judy: Here's Who We Support With Our Tax Money

chilaxe says...

Judge Judy's reasoning seems to be that a free-loader can't sue another free-loader, but isn't the woman right that she's liable for back-pay on the rent even if she didn't have the money to pay it at the time?

Thank you... Same with the mention of chalks. Same with the mention of using the bucket. Same with the comment that lets people know that THESE are usually the things you call in to pull/winch someone stuck. Same with the realization that everything happening in the video = tax payer money being used (paying both state workers-maybe three-to screw this up; although, that may be a utilities truck "trying to pull him out").

It completely confuses me how they haven't taught basic maneuvering on how to get these things unstuck or get things unstuck--I can almost guarantee that most farmers (whether they've been in the snow or not; at that weight mud might be worse than snow) that use one regularly know what to do.

I also must give @jmd an honorable mention for saying what I was thinking the whole time. If you see something like that get on the phone to the local PD and get out there and get the information (trust me; that driver may be hard up for cash, but that is no excuse to "possibly" cause mayhem with their work/payments for months). Also, the lady across the street is yelling just fine what the hell is his problem? He's basically muttering the whole time until his last sentence (then decides to either go out there and get dressed or goes back to sleep). Maybe that street has great acoustics.

As for the firing bit. Look at the complete negligence shown in this video. To me it shows: no common sense, can't ask for help (as said way up top--I'm sure they'll handle him gingerly for most likely totaling a vehicle--or he could have asked for help), gets a second car involved, HUGE waste of tax-payers money from this one stupid event (I'll wager that this little event will cost anywhere from 10k low -if the SUV frame is pulled to far out of alignment- and 30k high--most likely this is about 16k'ish, overall) and one more if he didn't call the cops himself. If you need the job, do IT RIGHT. You can't EVER use that as an excuse to not do the job given to you; especially so when it concerns near pre-meditated negligence all caught on camera. The fact that they did do the initial, possibly no damage, bumper hit should have been the stopping point. When they decided to keep going and said "fuck it", that is a fire-able offense. On the spot .

Last part that I find funny. That thing is heavy as hell. I'm not too sure what those guys thought they'd accomplish by trying to "pull" it out. Winching it out is at the least what you would do. Instead, what really frees the heavy-machinery is it using that SUV as friction for the tires. All they did was pull it sideways into it.

This made me think TSA employees are acting well-reasoned in bad-conditions...

(Longer than I wanted what I wanted it to be, oh well. BTW, this did go national atleast on CNN and the Weather Channel. ....So many things you can do to get yourself in that situation: salt/sand/gravel mixtures in front & back, shovel, metal/rubber tire wedges, @Payback's comment, @ridesallyridenc comment, @BoneRemake's comment, @Porksandwich's comment, it goes, on, and on, and on, and on.... )

The tow truck would of have/should of have had Tire chalks, he could of have put those in place and used his winch to pull the front end loader. And yes they have chalks for mud and snow, they grip into the snow/ice/mud like fish hook barbs, and resist the truck from being pulled backwards via the winch.

Exactly what I was thinking. You can also back it up with the bucket. Bucket in, bucket down, bucket out, bucket up... repeat.

Backhoe scales tower in Germany

Porksandwich says...

I'll take crawler excavator as a more apt description of it, at least you'd know it came on tracks. Not sure what you'd call that attachment on it, looks like it was special made since it has all the swirl marks on the contact side of it.

All I know is I wouldn't want to work on the crew that referred to everything that digs as an excavator, most of em have multiple on site. Rubber tires so they can get up on the street, tracked for when it doesn't matter if the terrain is tore up. And if you want to be really anal about it, anything that doesn't have a digging implement attached to it shouldn't be called an excavator and "backhoe" describes the direction the bucket travels to pickup dirt (toward the machine). A "shovel" bucket works just like a shovel...so away from the machine.

So technically what I called a "backhoe" in my first post should be rephrased to say "Backhoe loader". This machine in the video while listed as an excavator on the companies website, technically can not excavate anything with it's current attachments. So I guess we can refer to it as a crawler tractor with a boom since that describes it more accurately.

Being super anal is tiresome. It's definitely not a backhoe though, it's other descriptions aside from a Liebherr 312 are very debatable apparently.

Porksandwich says...

That's not a backhoe, that's track hoe.

Left side of screen looks like a rubber tire loader.

Right side is a bull dozer.

Most distance item looks like it might be another rubber tire loader.

Machine at 1:26 is a track loader.

Hard to tell if they have track or tires with it being so dark and pretty much always being far camera shots. Day time building scenes are easiest to see.

But the thing climbing the tower is a track hoe. Track hoes can spin all the way around on their tracks, so they can dig a hole and load the dirt to a truck behind them.

A back hoe can only move it's digging arm in roughly a 180 degree arc, basically it's 90 degrees off center in either direction, so they can only load a truck that's sitting beside them. I have run backhoe (often), and a very small version of a track hoe (week or so). Backhoes are called backhoes because basically they used to be tractors with a loading bucket on the front and a hoe attachment on the back. They eventually morphed into what you see today, loading bucket or skid loader attachment on front and hoe (digging arm) on back....never seen them on tracks if it's even an option... typically rubber tires with stabilizer legs they can let down on the digging arm end of the machine. So the front bucket and the 2 stabilizer legs make it so the machine is pretty solid on the ground. Digging without the legs down is a good way to throw up your lunch especially if the ground is really hard, the tires just constantly bounce from the force the arm can add and relieve in a blink of an eye.

Bobcats and backhoes are what most people own as they can do a lot of jobs with the right attachments/buckets/etc. I would say that backhoes are the safer of the two, while bobcats have more utility due to attachments. Bobcats will let you dump whatever you load in the front bucket right on top of the machine (where you're sitting) and aren't typically covered in the front....and their ability to spin in a circle is a good way to break things or hurt someone really bad.

Porndemic - Sex in the Digital Age

MilkmanDan says...

Wait a minute... People keep going back to porn because it "isn't working"? It doesn't "actually satisfy"? Ahh yes, as opposed to intimate sex with a loving partner, which you engage in one time and then you're completely satisfied and set for the rest of your life. ...Oh wait, she didn't intend to imply that? I don't think that porn viewing and a healthy mutually respectful and loving relationship with an actual human being are by any means mutually exclusive.

I hit puberty just as dialup internet was becoming available in my hometown. My family were early adopters and got internet service pretty much as soon as it was available. As you might imagine, I grew up with rather free and easy access to internet porn, and I browsed for quite a lot of it. However, I think that in examining my own experience as objectively as possible, I believe that I was able to self-police or direct my exposure away from the sorts of porn that I would agree are potentially damaging; for example violence, rape, or demeaning behavior (although definitions of each of those vary a lot). But in any case, I think that the reason that I was able to achieve this self-direction was though good parenting. If these things concern you, talk to your kids about it, and explain why. Provide them with the framework they need, and you'll probably be surprised at how well they react.

And just for one more anecdote, I thought I'd contribute a story that exposes just how much of a nerd I am. When I was a sophomore in High School, I was into math. I was taking trigonometry with mostly seniors and a few juniors. I had a complex graphing calculator, a Texas Instruments TI-85, with a roughly 2.5 inch by 3.5 inch screen. On the internet, you could download programs that would overwrite the basic "operating system" of the calculator, and allow you to load programs that people coded up in assembly language compatible with the machine's Z80 processor.

One such program was an image viewer. The calculator normally just had a 2-color liquid crystal screen; each pixel was either ON (black) or OFF (white). This viewer program allowed the screen to be treated as grayscale by adjusting the contrast/brightness values sent to individual pixels, as opposed the the screen as a whole as per usual.

What did I do with this program? I loaded it up with porn, of course. All softcore nudes, mostly Pamela Anderson as I recall. So, with the correct button presses to get into the assembly loader, I had a very low-resolution porn image browser. Being a sophomore, I thought that I could gain some "street cred" with the upperclassmen by showing off my porn. And, as you can probably guess, they immediately turned me in to the teacher just because it would be fun to watch me squirm. Fortunately, my teacher was very cool about it. He said: "I don't want to see it, I don't want to know about it, and if I ever hear anything about it again in the future, I'll be highly displeased". That was enough to get me to delete the program from the calculator.

The segment about porn on (the oh-so ubiquitous) cellphones brought that episode to mind.

Degausser...Would it work? Maybe. Degaussing renders the magnetic media completely unusable and damages the storage system...ok? A better plan for "illegal" down loaders is to act as joe2 suggested, tell the FBI to return with a warrant..BUT-What if (chances are good they do) they already have one secured....yer screwed.
A simpler, foolproof plan is to employ a system of RHI (Remote Hardware Incineration) near the front door or in a pocket. Feds arrive, push button, and an electronic fuse ignites detcord easily attached to the internal harddrive of yer PC. Bobs yer uncle, harddrive annihilated.(Remember how Mel Gibson got rid of his evidence in Conspiracy Theory?)

Ahhh, but you might recall in Conspiracy Theory, his RHI also incinerated his building. Now, if you are willing to submit yourself to an arson charge (and probably attempted murder, since you would be starting a fire with the police in your house, they would certainly enter when they saw the fire start) rather than have your data looked at, then that's a good choice, but I disagree that it's simpler. Setting up a degaussing loop is plug and play, way easier than setting up a det-chord fireing button (but not nearly as fun). Personally, I think a "tampering with evidence" charge is preferable.
Also note, if the feds come to your door looking for evidence without a warrant, then return with a warrant for that evidence, and you have destroyed it in the mean time, you are (probably) guilty of tampering with evidence, even though it wasn't in the feds custody as evidence yet.
(this is not legal advice, it is opinion, and I am not a lawyer)
