Jimmy Kimmel on Santa Fe School Shooting

bobknight33 says...

Maybe some day America will look at the root causes and make policies that actually do good, not political grandstanding like this video.

Addressing Gang violence and mental illness issues first would be a good start.

Hey Incels, women don’t owe you anything

ChaosEngine says...

100% agree with the first part.

"the internet is killing people's ability to be social"
Not so sure about that. Pre-internet incels definitely existed, but I don't think they would have "worked it out" any more than they would today. If anything, I think the internet can bring marginalised people together, for good or ill.

As you say, the problem is one of magnification or more specifically reinforcement.... the "echo chamber" effect.

OTOH, connecting with a marginalised group can be a positive. If there's no-one around you who has the same interests/desires/problems, the world can feel quite lonely. As usual, context matters.

no one is owed anything, these "nice guys" as you call them are not that nice if they lose patience with their flawed strategy, then attack women.

how nice a person is doesn't matter, most women want someone who excites them/makes them laugh/is an action man/follows through on promises.

these incel people are not an internet group by coincidence... the internet is killing people's ability to be social, especially those people who would have already had trouble, but could have worked it out pre-internet, now people have internet forums as a crutch to help them never have to speak to real people ever and everything gets magnified.

"Aren't there incel women? "

Actually, I believe the term was coined by a woman, who meant it to be a positive group for socially awkward, marginalised or mentally ill people.

"How about a program....hookers for incels....or something similar?"
That's one of the reasons why decriminalisation of prostitution is a good thing.

"Making them feel more inadequate and less a part of society will definitely lead to more attacks, so that seems like a really dumb move."
To be fair, Jim does address this. As he said himself, almost all humans are incel at some point.

I think there's also a reasonable case to be made for people to be less hung up on looks.

But if your response to being incel is to act like an entitled arsehole on reddit, or worse, to do something like this, it's kinda hard to have sympathy for you. (obviously, not you, newt... I'm sure you're a fine looking nad who has 5s of sex a year )

I don't particularly enjoy smoking pot, but it is speeding my recovery from a long term illness no end. As soon as I don't have to I'll stop, simple as that. The law sucks.

The White House's Violence in Video Games

RFlagg says...

That is the part that befuddles me with their whole argument. Every other country in the world has these games, movies, and TV... have they seen some of the stuff coming out of Japan and parts of Europe. They all have equally violent games and movies, and they don't have the same problem. And as was pointed out by CrushBug, they are all Rated M games.

They all have "mentally ill" people too... and don't have the same problem. Another argument that makes no sense, given that one of their first actions was to make it easier for "mentally ill" people to get guns. Though as I understand it that hasn't gone into effect yet, it's still the principle of saying "it's mental illness" while making it easier for those you are blaming. Not to mention every version of their attempts to get rid of Obamacare included massive cuts to mental health programs.

The fact that all these people are the same people who scream "right to life" in regards to abortion, and that's why they vote Republican (a party that loves war and the death penalty), is a bit odd since they seem to love their right to own a gun far more than the tons of lives snuffed out by said guns each year. I'd be more or less happy enough, for now, to just end the Dickey amendment and see how the data works out. But no, they still refuse to do that... probably because the NRA has an idea of where that data will go.

I like how they ripped things straight from people's youtube channels.

Also, they do understand that the rest of the world has access to these games right? Kind of shits on any correlation they want to make there, doesn't it?

God Isn't Allowed In School

RFlagg says...

Because of the shirt/meme shown around the 0:23 mark, where people ask "God, why do you allow violence in our schools" to which the reply is "I'm not allowed in schools". Remember that the Christian Right STRONGLY loves guns and are the biggest advocates of gun rights.

Every mass shooting, the Christian Right comes out and screams that it is a lack of God in schools and in our society that is causing the problem, not guns. It is never guns. It is the lack of God, and then violent movies and games, and mental health (which if true, then one would have to wonder why the GOP passed a law, which while it hasn't taken effect yet, makes it easier for mentally ill people to get a gun, and why every version of the repeal and replace Obamacare include massive cuts to mental health programs). Of course, other countries, as noted, doesn't include forced prayer in school, which the Christian Right wants to see returned, and they don't have the school shooting problems.

Basically, it is the Christian Right's fault. They have made fighting against gun control one of their major platforms. And as the Christian Right makes up the vast majority of Christians in the US (or at least the loudest, and near 100% guaranteed to get out and vote... which is why there won't be a Blue Wave 2018), they control the message. So the "God isn't allowed in schools" argument comes up every single school shooting as one of the most oft-repeated reasons for them. Just watch Fox News or any of the primary Christian programming like Jim Baker and 700 Club, and it is the lack of God in schools, the fact that there's a war against Christianity why we have these shootings.

The US is a country where a full 40% of the population believe the universe is under 10,000 years old. Where saying "happy holidays" is a war on Christianity, and that Christianity is the most attacked faith in the world, which proves that it is the one true faith. And this isn't hyperbole on my part, this is what they teach in the Christian Right churches, movies, shows, televangelists and the like (I used to be among their numbers). They honestly see attempts at controlling guns as an attack on their faith. They honestly ignore Jesus saying that it wasn't an eye for an eye and that he said those who live by the sword will die by it, and think that the right to own and defend oneself as a divine right from God himself. So they bring the lack of God as the reason for all these shootings in the US.

It's almost stupid to drag religion into the gun violence/ownership issue. There are religious/atheist citizens who support/detest gun violence/ownership. What's the benefit of doing it?

Why Do Doctors Have Men Turn Their Heads and Cough?

MilkmanDan says...

Somehow, I've made it to 36 years old without ever having this test done.

I remember grade and high school classmates talking a lot about it, but that was usually in conjunction with going out for some team sport, which I never did. Sometimes a sudden cough gives me a bit of a twinge in the groin, so I've wondered if that is a potential symptom of the hernia, but I've never had any serious issues, so "meh" I guess.

My brother (adopted, so different genetics in case this runs in families) DID have this sort of hernia though, and had it surgically corrected. He came through with no ill effects, and I think that his was actually an extreme enough case that it was probably worth correcting and rolling the dice on the adverse side effects. Sucks that that was NOT the case for you guys, @newtboy and @Fairbs -- definitely good that it sounds like they are trying to just keep an eye on minor cases rather than immediately opting for surgery now, not that it does you guys any good...

Takeout creates a lot of trash. It doesn't have to.

Star Citizen Squadron 42 gameplay

OverLord says...

Ill just say again, it's not the FIRST hour. This is a section of gameplay that was chosen as it has a few of the mechanics they wanted to show off (quantum travel, player NPC interaction, FPS combat etc). It's not the start of your Single player experience.

So much wrong.

Reality is not subjective. That's insane. Your perception of reality is subjective, but only if you aren't careful.

(Redacted)

Mental defect doesn't mean mental illness. It means your brain chemistry might be abnormal and react abnormally to drugs. Parkinson's isn't considered mental illness for example.

This story was about him stupidly taking totally unknown drugs from unknown sources, why on earth are your panties in such a bunch because I stated the obvious, that this is not a normal marijuana overdose experience?

Pretty weak, bro.

Classic "I'm a pro drug guy" comments here. "I've never been that high so they must have been on some other drug". Guess what dumbass, everyone is different and reality is subjective. I've heard of many people having similar experiences on edible marijuana. Just because it didn't happen to YOU, does not mean it cannot be that way for others!! And how can you say "with confidence" about a situation you have no facts from? You can't. And to top it off you dismiss this person's experience by suggesting they could be mentally Ill. Pretty weak man.

I'm pretty certain this was not just marijuana. As a person who has ingested over an oz of AAA quality marijuana in a single sitting, I will confidently say there was something else in those brownies to have this effect....unless he has a mental disorder. This is not a normal reaction to excess thc. I expect he unintentionally just got wet (pcp).
