By the way, I was at a special corporate evening last night and the main speaker was an oil CEO. They found huge gas seam reserves here in Queensland and there are plans to drill tens of thousands of wells over the next few decades to extract it. So we got propoganda fed to us for nearly 30 minutes, about how it was Queenslands future, and it was unavoidable. Watch "gaslands" the movie documentary if you don't know how badly fracking fucks up the environment and the people living nearby.

All this so a few offshore companies can make fortunes on the back of our own ruin, the biggest irony is that the gas isn't even going to be used in Australia, it's all getting shipped overseas, so our local gas prices are going to increase due to the huge amounts of it needed to run the extraction operations.

So god damn sickening.

Geesh, calm down. We actually have a shared rainwater tank here -- the groundwater that I already mentioned.

I calculated the electrical cost of running my sprinklers, and it came to 5 or 6 dollars a month. So yes, there's some carbon impact.

When I say 3 months a year, I don't mean 3 months of continuous operation, you realize? It's 2 and half hours every morning. In the Fall and Spring the grass doesn't need watering, and in the Winter it's under snow.

Anyway, if you want to yell at me for not being low impact, do so because I live 20 miles from work. I don't want to, but I don't have a choice.

Actually, I'm curious about your electrical consumption since you're shaming me for mine. I live in a state with one of the lowest per-capita carbon emission rates. I have aggressively programmed electronic thermostats and compact fluorescent lights. I run my air conditioner only about 30 days out of the year. I wonder if you're not actually living a higher impact lifestyle by trying to live in an arid area?

I have a different perspective. It feels like childhood energy around here. I had an older brother, and the dynamic was he would beat up on me big time, I would hit him once, and he would beat on me even more for hitting back.

So from my perspective, I get beat on every single fricking fracking day (not personally, just the atmosphere), I say one thing -- and pow, the pile on happens.

Don't much enjoy that.

But I can see that you experience it differently.

Unfortunately, the economic situation in many states is forcing mineral rights sales...fun times. I can't see how risking contamination of as much fresh water as is in question here can possibly be a good idea for anyone. Can you imagine the economic damage that comes with entire areas of the country having unsafe drinking water?

There needs to be some sort of standard punishment for causing long-term damage to any public system, whether it's economic or environmental. The fact that the gas companies can do this or banks can do similar things economically and get away with executive bonuses and such is simply intolerable. In the case of fracking, even if some case were somehow brought against Halliburton can you even put a true dollar amount on the damages you'd be responsible for as a corporation when you're talking about an entire aquifer or watershed?

But really - these companies need to pay for any damage they cause. This is simple liability.

That said, natural gas really does make a lot of sense from an energy perspective, and fracking is how you get a lot of natural gas. If they can afford to pay people $100k for their gas rights, they can pay to fix a busted well.


Also, protip: Home Depot will test your well water for you, for free. Obviously, don't trust testing done by someone with an agenda.
