Craig Ferguson - 9/11

Retroboy says...

Michael Palin of Monty Python fame did something similar, as did Billy Connelly, who did an awesome tour of almost the entire coast of Canada. Seems to be a "thing" among comedians from the isles, and Craig is certainly the type of spontaneous and interesting guy that could pull this off very very well.

Well worth watching: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Connolly:_Journey_to_the_Edge_of_the_World
and (now 25 years old!)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Palin:_Around_the_World_in_80_Days

EDIT: Game show, huh? Waste of talent in my book, but probably VERY easy money for Craig and a very controllable schedule for filming. Ah well.

RIP-Robin Williams :(

bremnet says...

Yeah, it is pretty sad... that some mourn for people who have more oppotunities than most, money, fame, talent and a legacy known around the world, but that isn't enough, or they can't handle it and decide that suicide is the way to go. Why don't you sift about the 20 or so military combat vets (not just US vets either) that commit suicide every day, men and women who decided that their day at work could mean dying for you, me, and a belief - you know, if you really are sick of sifting this kind of idolizing bullshit.

How Mass Murders Should NOT Be Covered By The Media

wraith says...

As far as I understand the psychological reasoning behind this, it is the same as a well known effect in the area of suicides which in Germany we call Werther Effect after a novel be Wolfgang Goethe (published 1774), which caused a number of "copycat suicides".

It seems to me that a potential spree killer is desperately trying to be noticed by society either out of personal, religious or political reasons.

If you show such persons that they will get noticed, that they will get there 15 minutes of fame, it might push them a closer to the realization that committing mass murder is a way to be "noticed".

MY HERO - Foo Fighters

Fairbs says...

Pretty much my favorite Foo Fighters song. I don't remember if it's really about Kurt or if that's just what I made up in my head.

'There goes my hero' is like Kurt dying. 'He's ordinary' is because Kurt didn't like the fame or want it. He wanted to be in a band and play with his friends. Not become a 'hero'. And to Grohl, Kurt WAS ordinary (not some rock God) and at the same time he was Grohls hero because he respected him so much. Or that's how I read it at least.

Molyneax on Bundy Ranch Standown of BLM

Fade says...

Check out Peter Joseph of Zeitgeist fame's take down of this total goober. Molyneax is a pratt and basically the opposite of everything he says is true.

Kobayashi pranks the New York Cosmos

Engels says...

They make it sound like Kobayashi is a household name. Never heard of him. If his only claim to fame is speed eating contests, well, uhm, isn't that a bit of an esoteric interest?

Lorde performing Royals at the Grammys

Fairbs says...

She is. I think she wrote this song when she was 15. Her Mother is a poet laureate in NZ. I read a big story about her in Rolling Stone. Pretty interesting. A lot more together than some of her peers. Who knows if the fame will change her though.

She's 17? I only ask because she looks like a modern day Madonna. Or maybe Wednesday. Awesome song tho'

8th Grade Baller Gets Lucky Twice from Full Court

Sagemind says...

"...8th grader Easton Gamoke is enjoying fame like never before. He manages to hit an incredible full court buzzer beater to give his team the win. As if that's not enough, when local TV news shows up to interview him, he sinks the same shot for the second time - and a legend among his peers is born..."

Science teacher got surprising results from McDonald's diet.

lucky760 says...

I think his point was to try to surprise people by riding on the wake of Super Size Me and using a attention-grabbing headline like "Eat Only McDonald's and Lose Weight!"

My point had nothing to do with whether it was better for your diet etc. etc. My only point was: Yes, of course it's possible to lose weight and eat [only] at McDonald's. That's not surprising at all.

If your body uses more calories than it takes in, regardless of what kind of calories they are, you will lose weight. You could eat only candy or maple syrup + cayenne pepper + lemon juice or pumpkin pie every day and still lose weight, but those results shouldn't "surprise" anyone.

He intentionally mislead people by making them think he ate a "normal" adult's food choices at McDonald's and lost weight, but he severely restricted his diet (and added extra exercise) to forcibly yield his intended results [and grasp at straws for his 15 minutes of fame].

It wasn't a clinical study, I think the point was merely to show that it was possible for a overweight, borderline obese man to eat only MCD menu items, be satiated and maintain the calorific deficit needed to gradually lose weight, provided basic exercise was maintained.

I don't think the point was to stress that changing to MCD made his diet better (in that case adding exercise is obviously cheating), just to show that it is possible to lose weight and eat MCD.

Taking this as a reference for calorie burned:

http://www.health.harvard.edu/newsweek/Calories-burned-in-30-minutes-of-leisure-and-routine-activities.htm

45 mins walking is about 300 calories burned. Considering that teaching is primarily a pretty sedentary job (outside of class), that's only freeing up an extra 15% of your roughly daily intake needs of 2000 calories.

Not huge. I think the main takeaway here is, junk food or not, if your goal is losing weight (ignoring long term health complications), then it's all about portion control.

@JiggaJonson

As above, I think this is the main issue. I usually want half the portion that take away food outlets offer. Pricing structure then distorts the cost of the smallest size to make the larger 'value meal' much more attractive. One reason why I tend to prefer sashimi eat outs.

Duck Dynasty Butthole Logic

eric3579 says...

I think this video says more about this guys fascination with "fame" then anything else. Hes talking about some hick that happens to be on TV. Stupid people say stupid shit ALL THE TIME. The guy hes talking about just happens to be on TV. STOP worshiping pop culture and or their fame.

I have a bit of a buzz (had a bit of a drink...anxiety issues) so i might redact this at a later time but for now this guy just annoys me.

QUARK Episode 1 from 1979

Trout says...

Wikipedia says this pilot aired in May of 1977, not 1979 (show was cancelled in '78)..... also the show was created by Buck Henry of Get Smart (and The Graduate) fame! Awesome find.

Lady Gaga's Final Sketch on SNL

chingalera says...

SNLs' well-known for that the last 15 years or so...This wasn't too bad for the simple fact that she's using complete sentences and singing to spoof herself.

+1 art level-up for Gaga

May she continue to evolve and maybe one day say to herself, 'Fuck fame and glory'...then re-invent herself through traditional Jazz be-bop piano.

kokomo arnold and the lost sound of acoustic blues

chingalera says...

So now as blues goes, Kokomo Arnold did gain fame and money during his lifetime, and I'd imagine he pretty much rolled in it till after prohibition when he had to start making a living with music instead of liquor.
