I'd hope that they put some time into automated dick-detection technology. Or perhaps just a tagging system to alert about rogue dicks for the admins to delete. I mean, you can't make this and not address that issue in some manner.

Not as advanced as I was hoping. But I'm sure they will get there. He said it cooks now based on time. I'd rather it maybe use infrared to detect temps. Or insert a temp probe. I'd like to see it do the toppings. I think that is where most mistakes are made. Cooked to order doesn't always come out as ordered.

Well, things are not as rosy as folks like Steven Pinker would like us to believe. As much as I dislike resorting to Hollywood for philosophical insights, True Detective was absolutely on point in this quote:

Now, they were talking about a preacher. But I'd argue this applies to scapegoats as well. And if your arguments undermine the scapegoat, it starts losing its efficiency as a focal point of people's discontent.

Most of us have so much day-to-day shit to deal with that outsourcing the macro-shit to a boogeyman, any boogeyman, helps us get through the day without wanting to bash our head against the wall. Or bash someone else's head in, for that matter.

This doesn't excuse this level of self-delusion, but maybe it explains it to some degree. I'd say keep doing what I know you've been doing for many years: present your case in a respectful manner.

There was a point when aerial drones were only used for surveillance, because of ethical concerns about arming them. We crossed that line (16 years ago today), but kill-orders still have to come from a human, and that's the line that the A.I. professor (end of video) hopes we never cross.

When aliens could be anything you have to look for everything. It's not that SETI etc don't understand that life out there may be completely beyond anything we could imagine or detect...it's just that you'd be wasting your time gazing in to space not knowing what you are looking for or trying to detect the undetectable.

I mean rly. "Beyond Imagination" ... "We need more imagination"... dunno.

Exactly. I see a phrase all the time:

'If there are aliens in our galaxy, why haven't we detected evidence of them?'

Perhaps because they are so different from what we even recognize as life that we don't even know what we are looking for. Perhaps the use of radio waves to communicate is something they haven't done in so long, that using it to send a message in space is unfathomable. Or perhaps they never even used that technology in the first place. It's possible that their own physiology would make such technology pointless.

The point is, we're looking for them in very human ways and expecting something very human to come back. Perhaps a civilization at a stage similar to ours out there is asking the same question and using a technology to search that we ourselves have no understanding of. They could be our galactic neighbors and our differing biologies and technology could be so different, that wouldn't even recognize each other as life.

On the flip side of that coin, I once had a UFO experience that was anything but 'lights in the night sky' and the object did things our planes couldn't hope to do. So who knows, maybe they are already here.

To be overly anal about it, uncanny valley concerns more the eeriness or revulsion 'peak' of a near lifelike replica. Think dead eyes in Polar Express or the plastic faces of Japan's android models.

This to me at least is beyond that trough on the uncanny valley chart, I do not sense any revulsion personally. I can of course detect it is still not real but no particular facet triggers that doppelganger reaction.

Yeah, it is still no excuse for him to go through with the order. Better to take a suspension for doing the right thing than to take one for just following orders. Plus you can easily tell the detective was throwing a tantrum even if his supervisor did tell him to arrest her.

So it gets worse.

The person they wanted to draw the blood from is a reserve police officer himself, was not even a suspect in the crash, and only got involved in the crash because the other driver was a suspect fleeing from pursuit by other officers.

So they didn't even need the blood really.

Both the detective and his supervisor are suspended on admin review because the detective said he called his supervisor and was told to arrest the nurse.

Truly sad. She is doing her job and following all the rules, but because the detective threw a temper tantrum she gets arrested. This is the equivalent of a parent telling a child they can't have something just because they want it and then the child abusively locking up the parent.

This guy should be fired, there is no excuse for someone with clear mental issues to be in charge of other peoples lives and freedom.
