there is also pink noise, brown/red noise, grey noise, plus other less commonly used varieties.

CNN is often displayed on screens in airports, food establishments, etc. with sound muted. Also, there are people who are deaf/hard of hearing that benefit from the caption.

It's just the words that are lost, and this type of interpretation brings it together. Above that, it's also not just the words, but the attitude and facial expressions which convey a strong feeling to the message of the music.

My sister is deaf. I know enough ASL to know this woman is truly exceptionally skilled. Not only is it accurate but also beautifully interpreted. Those of you who know more than one language know that it is never possible to directly translate almost anything. In the case of english to ASL, expressions that we may use a dozen words for are condensed into perhaps half as many signs or even less in some cases. For this song, conveying Eminem's eloquent phrasing is ASL takes an impressive amount of artistic skill beyond just having the vocabulary. Massive props.

My ex-girlfriend got into music more than anyone on the dance floor. What was best is that I could follow her but cannot really follow others. If you can't tell, she was deaf, I am not.

So, devils advocate: what is the point of signing music? Presumably the majority of people this is aimed at are deaf, and can't hear the melody. Ok, you can get the lyrics and the rhythm, but that's not really the music is it?

The only thing I will say is just because blatantly racist jokes are said, that doesn't automatically mean someone is racist.

A friend and I will literally try to say the most god awful racist crap to each other about black people partly to make fun of racism and to just be so shockingly horrifying that it's funny. We also make horrifyingly sexist jokes, I make jokes about Canada (he lives there), and he makes 'Murica jokes. We even make horrifyingly awful "yo mamma" jokes. But the key is we absolutely positively know for a fact that neither of us believe any of it. If our chat logs only were cataloged and examined, we'd appear to be members of the KKK who regularly fornicated with each other's mothers while repeatedly demanding women make us sandwiches.

I don't know enough about the specifics of this incident if this notion is applicable or not. However, with everything going on with racial issues and policing, it's certainly amazingly tone deaf at best.
