Trio Of Meteors Fly Through The Night Sky

RNC 2020 & Kenosha: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)

scheherazade says...

Perspectives on Rittenhouse seem to track perspectives on where one imagines one would be found in that situation.

Do you imagine being a looter or rioter?
Rittenhouse is bad.

Do you imagine being a resident of the street in question?
Rittenhouse is good.

The protest angle is moot, since Rittenhouse didn't go there to interact with protesters.

I personally wouldn't go attack property that doesn't belong to any of the people that ostensibly inspired the protest (the police officers responsible for the shooting). So I am more likely to imagine myself being a simple resident.

If it were the homes of the police officers being looted, then at least the looting would have some logical reason behind it.
I'm actually surprised, that after all these protests, and all the looting, and all the destruction, that nobody has bothered to actually target the people that are responsible. Brings into question sincerity.

Side note, I actually think that police were way in the wrong to shoot, or even bother, Jacob Blake. The man only stopped to break up a fight. Cops (responding to a call, ostensibly about that very fight) just showed up and went after him, without taking any time to assess what was going on. Absolutely reckless cowboy behavior with little regard for the state.

The Documented Truth About Trump Collusion and Obstruction

BSR says...

Well... there is that little bit about him killing children and breaking up families.

And if you wish to hide behind "The parents are at fault" I understand. That's how you protect yourself from the horror. Or you can always blame Trump as a cushion.

BTW, I don't believe you are a sore loser or a hypocritical liar. Just angry. I think you can relate to Trump and his anger. What you don't know is what it's doing to you.

We knew Trump was coming.

White Lie: The Cruel Abuse of a Starving Polar Bear

newtboy says...

I have to agree, since they also claim NO other starving polar bears were seen in 2017, and that sea ice didn't break up early, but in fact it was measured at around 5000km3 in September 2017 and the mean volume since 1979 is around 12000km3 in September, and average ice thickness was the lowest ever recorded for most of the year in 2017....when these articles were published.

The truth is, that IS what climate change LOOKS like, very few articles actually attributed this particular bears condition to climate change. Only those wishing to intentionally misread in order to contradict their own intentional misunderstanding didn't understand that. Lies indeed.

It reminds me of my brother denouncing the numbers on mass school shootings because in some, only one person was killed (but multiple shot), claiming that "mass shooting" meant "mass murder" was his way of debunking the argument and then denying there is a problem.

Right wing debate strategy....Step one, misrepresent a claim. Step two, prove that misrepresentation wrong. Step three, claim that debunks the entire argument the claim was supporting.

*lies

Even if the plight of this individual bear was misrepresented, this still sounds like some climate change denialism.

Hypersonic Missile Nonproliferation

Mordhaus says...

"To date, he says, the US has conducted tests on this type of missile system but to his knowledge none have been successful, flying for just a few seconds. "

Basically, Putin made a laughable claim that Russia already has a mach 10 missile, so China and the USA jumped down the rabbit hole.

Kind of like when Reagan started up the SDI star wars BS. Which some people believe led to the USSR dramatically boosting their defense spending, nigh bankrupting themselves and breaking up as a country.

Pouring water down a 50 meter well

newtboy jokingly says...

It accelerates at up to 9.8m/s^2 (- wind resistance)but terminal velocity can be well below or above 9.8m/s, depending on how (or if) it breaks up.

(I could only find terminal velocity data for droplets up to 3mm, and studies did show droplet stability up to 6mm outside laminar flows)

ABC News: Purity Balls: Lifting the Veil on Special Ceremony

Sagemind says...

Who said anything about under age sex?

When they're younger, dad makes them abstain for dating.
When they get older, their dad is choosing who who can date them, and ultimately who they will marry.

Where do these girls have a say in their own lives? Why are they not given the chance to make a few mistakes and learn what they want in a man. Not everyone wants the same thing.
This is brainwashing at best.

You need to teach them to make good decisions. Teach them to handle a break up, teach them to learn what they want and how to find it. Teach them to stand up for what they want, and then let them learn the skills of controlling their own destiny.

Personally, I'd prefer my daughter to have sex, learn a bit before deciding what she wants. Unfortunately, IT'S NOT UP TO ME. It's fully up to her, and I gave her the skills to make those choices on her own.

There are things like statutory rape laws because kids in middle and high school are too young to consent to sex. They legally CAN'T make that decision, so saying dad has control issues for proactively and publicly "deciding" for his daughter is pretty funny.

Why cultures that lose their wiser elders get into trouble

poolcleaner says...

@SFOGuy False positive. This is not the type of serious brawl that occurs when there is a severe lack of parenting in a particular neighborhood.

The "wise elder" in the video is proof of this -- he wouldn't have been able to so easily break up a fight if your anthropological study were at all accurate. The kids know they're in the wrong. They just don't like being laughed at by their "friends".

I've also never heard of a culture where teenagers don't get into fights after school and where classmates don't use peer pressure to bully less aware students into fighting. This is a classic scene from countless middle class neighborhoods, white or black.

When their yuppie parents see this video, I can almost guarantee some asses will be red. Unless they're the kind of ultra liberal parents that don't believe in punishment -- then I may be inclined to agree with you in part.

Haha, OK. It's funny, but I'm unclear as to whether or not you guys are making fun of me or not.
At this point I'm still recovering from the effects of dealing with the storm of memories that flooded my brain after maniacally confirming that the sift indeed did "break up" with me.
I love this website because everyone posts such amazing stuff and in truth I have felt guilty for not contributing to the community more, but I'm not that good at that, so I'll try and do better. Wasn't there a dude on here called chaosengine from NZ who used to comment a lot what happened to that guy?
Anyway, thanks for not banning me because I really love this place.
I never created an account before because I'm a bit wary of speaking up because people here be cray cray [sarcasm] and public vilification is terrifying, despite the anonymity (so, yes I'm a real person).

Man Arrested & Punched for Sitting on Mom's Front Porch

greatgooglymoogly says...

I'm beginning to believe the only way this gets fixed is the black community bypasses the police entirely. Set up a "Black 911" staffed by volunteers who are willing to break up fights, mundane cop stuff, etc etc, and won't shoot somebody at the slightest provocation. Then start de-funding the police until they are only responding to "shots fired" calls in black neighborhoods where they need to be armed.
