canadian man faces jail for disagreeing with a feminist

We're not talking about a random "beat up this picture" game, or at least, that's not the impression I got (if it IS user-generated, then I retract my statements re Spurr). We're talking about a game specifically about beating up Sarkeesian.

First, it's the old comedy motto... "punch up, not down". Sarkeesian has received multiple, unbelievably vile threats against her. More to the point, those threats are credible. She's not a famous celebrity with an army of bodyguards to protect her. There's a very real chance that someone could just assault her on the street, far more so than Bieber.

Second, the people that want to punch Bieber are doing so because he's annoying. There's really very little malice behind it in almost all cases.

You can't reasonably argue that's the same for Sarkeesian. There is a genuine and widely documented movement of people on the web who have expressed serious hatred of her.

Let me put it this way, if I compared a "Punch Bieber" and a "Shoot Bin Laden" in the head game, which would you say has more genuine ill intent behind it?

When someone did shoot Bin Laden, everyone cheered. If someone seriously assaulted Bieber, even people who are annoyed by him would say that's going too far.

OTOH, if someone seriously assaulted Sarkeesian, there is a sizeable group of people who be delighted by that.

We don't make judgements in a vacuum. We must take what we know of the context surrounding something to decide whether we like it or not.

A game about punching Bill Cosby in the face? We can reasonably assume it's motivated by sexual assault allegations.
Now take the same game, and instead of Bill Cosby, you can choose any black celebrity. Again, you can make a reasonable assumption, except this time we could say it's racially motivated.

Possibly I'm misinterpreting his intentions, but if so, he's not really attempting to correct the public perception of them.

I pretty much agreed with you...except for this part.
Sarkeesian is another polarizing public figure, so how is making a game where you punch HER picture different from, say, Bieber (who also receives death threats from random people, BTW)...or any random picture you might upload into the 'game'? The only difference I see is the level of success at being a public figure.
Maybe I'm just an idiot, but I don't get what you mean. Please explain.

How Plants Attract Bodyguards

10 Hours of Walking in NYC as a Woman

Dumdeedum says...

There wasn't a single "innocent" call there, merely some guys thinking they're being more progressive and have a better chance if they holler "nice day" instead of "nice ass".

I've always wanted to take a catcaller and hire lots of gay guys to hit on him all day, just to see the reaction. I suspect I'd have to hire bodyguards too.

Shootout in Parliament Building

Payback says...

Well, historically, he's armed with a big ass club (mace) that he's supposed to bash heads with should a fight break out. I was just surprised he was "packin' heat".

I always knew he was in charge of Parliament security, but a lot of positions that are 100s of years old tend to be completely ceremonial, like the Speaker of the House.

It's like finding out the British "Beefeaters" (Yeoman Warders, the Royal bodyguards) actually have UZI machine guns under their hats and silenced Glocks stuck in their waistcoats when all they ever do is really conduct tours.

Well, would he still be at arms if he wasn't armed?

Unmanned: America's Drone Wars trailer

I'd still like to understand how you believe diplomacy to be a more workable solution. If diplomacy is to be the solution to extremism in Pakistan, I presume you look to the moderate leaders in Pakistan for the answers? When I go through the list of such leaders, a disturbing trend is observable.

Shahbaz Bhatti was an elected member of the National Assembly lobbying for repealing Pakistan's death penalty for blasphemy. He was assassinated on March 2, 2011.

Salman Taseer was a governor in Pakistan, lobbying for repealing Pakistan's death penalty for blasphemy. He was assassinated by one of his own bodyguards on January 4, 2011.

Benazir Bhutto, the nations first female Prime Minister had returned after being chased off by the nations military to run in the 2008 elections. She was assassinated on December 27, 2007.

This list is just highlights, countless more moderate leaders keep ending up dead in Pakistan. Meanwhile, elected figures like those from parties like the JUI-F survive, and give speeches in Pakistan's National Assembly declaring Osama Bin Laden an Islamic hero, and the assassins that killed those in the prior list as heroes as well.

I don't mean to be rude about it, but I just don't understand why you believe that diplomacy alone can be expected to succeed in such circumstances?

@bcglorf
thank you for that well thought out commentary.

we still disagree but i always appreciate when someone i disagree with can enlighten me in how they came to their conclusions.

what appears to many my abhorrence to authority is actually my perception between power and powerlessness.
the ruthlessness of power.
the vulgarity and twisted logic power uses to oppress and control.

look at the words you use to describe pakistan.
we both agree on what is happening but disagree on how to deal with it.

cant thank you enough bc.
very few will interact with respect and not come to prejudiced conclusions.

Chef Ramsay versus/vs. Douchebag Cook

Fletch says...

Ramsay vs. douchebag, and Ramsay isn't speaking into a mirror?

Ramsay started the namecalling, and then accuses him off "mouthing off"? This just looks so forced and ramped up on Ramsay's part. Part of the "show", I guess.

And, actually, Ramsay does sound scared, even with his two bodyguards there. His version of events seems to forget just about every single thing he said to the guy.

I bet you if you ask these airhead celebs to stop using bodyguards that carried guns they'd laugh in your face. And I know Beyonce's guards carry pistols since I worked stage security at one of her concerts in Atlanta couple times.

I own 2 assault rifles, and I'll be dead before they are taken away.

Bald for Bieber

bareboards2 says...

From Calgary Herald:
Call it a tragic turn of events or a bald-faced lie. Rumours began circulating Thursday afternoon that Canadian pop star Justin Bieber had been diagnosed with cancer, prompting an outpouring of support from avid Beliebers – many of whom went as far as shaving their heads.

The gossip mill initially began spinning out of control thanks to a tweet from Entertainment Tonight’s official Twitter account (@ETonlineAlert) that stated:

“Pop star Justin Bieber was diagnosed with cancer earlier this morning. Bieber fans are shaving their heads to show support.”

The tweet was quickly deleted, but not before #BaldForBieber began trending.

No official comment regarding the rumours has surfaced from the 18-year-old star, however, his bodyguard Kenny Hamilton took to his Twitter account (@KennyHamilton) to deny the cancer diagnosis.

I Dare You To Steal The Olympic Torch. I DARE YOU!

Mauru says...

So let's say you got this giant party keg at your party of 150 of your friends. Some idiot runs up and knocks it over. You'd be pissed.

Now imagine the party-keg is a torch and the party is like a lot larger. They also just furiously debated about world politics, health and sportsmanship. THEY ALSO DID IT FOR A LONG TIME.

You might just as well walk over to mekka and shit on the prophet's stone. Being pushed off a road by a bunch of jogging, silly looking bodyguards seems pretty civilized to me.

If you want a world without symbols... dude, that's a mighty off-road plan.
