Wikileaks - U.S. Apache killing civilians in Baghdad

joedirt says...

I think you are wrong. The concept of you break it you buy it applies. The US is still in their country killing people. Period. That is all that matters. You lost the ability to say the soldiers were doing their job, in fear for their life.. That doesn't apply when you are still occupying a country and killing citizens daily.

Imagine you lived in Anchorage, how many years of living under Soviet occupation would you tolerate? How many dead Americans would you put up with, every day being murdered by some Soviet occupying force?

I think the only solution is the karmic one. The sons and daughters of these soldiers should be forced to watch this video every year on the anniversary of the murder of these innocent people. If you are still only considering the reuters folks and the van... You need to watch the whole video where they launch rockets into buildings and murder people for another "i saw something in his hand" type death sentence.

I'm sorry. You do not have the luxury to make "it looked like a gun" mistakes when you are raining down death from a mile away in the air. Why not get actual video or real footage? Like from a drone or fly in closer and take a look?

Joe McCain calls 911 to complain about traffic

dial 411, or free 1-800-GOOG-411 to get a local police department number while on the road

In Anchorage, I know that absolutely doesn't work. I use GOOG-411 for everything, so when I called to report that several lights were out on a major road in town with no maintenance crews around, no power outage, and no other obvious problem, I was met with at least 12 different numbers for the PD. When I went through the addresses and picked the one I thought was best, I got their fax number.

On the other hand, why in the world is this actually news? There are plenty of asshats that call 911 all the time for various stupid reasons. None of them have made the news, and very, very few of them made the "Top 10 911 calls of this year" list that various networks have. Just because the McCains share parents doesn't make this anything special.

Palin Abused Power but did Not Violate the Law

CNN needs to read the findings more closely.
Abuse of power is unlawful according to Alaska state law.

Alright, I had to make an account just for this. I'll go ahead and quote the findings from page 8 of the report right here, verbatim.

Finding Number One

For the reasons explained in section IV of this report, I find that Governor Sarah Palin abused her power by violating Alaska Statute 39.51.110(a) of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act. Alaska Statute 39.52.110(a) provides

"The legislature reaffirms that each public officer holds office as a public trust, and any effort to benefit a personal or financial interest through official action is a violation of that trust."

Finding Number Two

I find that, although Walt Monegan's refusal to fire Trooper Michael Wooten was not the sole reason he was fired by Governor Sarah Palin, it was likely a contributing factor to his termination as Commissioner of Public Safety. In spite of that, Governor Palin's firing of Commissioner Monegan was a proper and lawful exercise of her constitutional and statutory authority to hire and fire executive branch department heads.

Finding Number Three

Harbor Adjustment Service of Anchorage, and its owner Ms. Murleen Wilkes, handled Trooper Michael Wooten's workers' compensation claim properly and in the normal course of business like any other claim processed by Harbor Adjustment Service and Ms. Wilkes. Further, Trooper Wooten received all the workers' compensation benefits to which he was entitled.

Finding Number Four

The Attorney General's office has failed to substantially comply with my August 6, 2008 written request to Governor Sarah Palin for information about the case in the form of emails.

Analyzing this, a few things should be readily apparent. One, it's completely contradictory. The first finding states Palin broke the law. The second says she didn't for the same reasons. Also note, in finding number one it states "I find that." This isn't a report from the legislative committee on the investigation. This is one man's interpretation of events. The legislature isn't even in session and this isn't their report! They didn't find anything! The only thing they did was agree to release this section of Mr. Branchflower's report. That's it. Mr. Branchflower is just providing counsel for the committee.

I'm not trying to defend Palin in anything. Have your reasons for hating her, I don't care. But have a valid reason. This is just a ridiculous, contradictory hatchet job that doesn't prove anything, yet people are eating it up.

Palin abused power, probe finds (Politics Talk Post)

Another article from MSN with a little more clarification on what this is about:

http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/10/10/1531677.aspx

They didn't actually find anything unethical about the firings. The abuse of power claims are based around accusations of her knowlingly allowing her husband to be involved somehow. Problem is they don't seem to have any actual evidence. Just statements that they couldn't prove a personal connection, but since they couldn't disprove one either it must be true. Here's an article from the Anchorage Daily News detailing the trooper that was fired:

http://www.adn.com/politics/story/476430.html

Just about everything that was in question ethically happened even before Palin ran for office. Also, the things Palin claimed caused her to fear this guy were all substantiated by the trooper's record. They had police statements from before Palin even ran for office where Wooten threatened family members and was physically abusive. I think this will only become big if something more concrete comes out of it. Like if it actually makes its way to the Alaska Personnel Board and they find that she actually broke the law (which is unlikely). I would also expect Obama's campaign to run with this too if it really carried any serious weight.

I do like this part of the BBC article since it sums up what I think pretty nicely:

"The US presidential race has now become so polarised both Republicans and Democrats will likely see the report's findings as vindication for their own trenchant views about Mrs Palin, says the BBC's Richard Lister in Washington.

Alaska's governor will either be seen as the victim of a Democratic party hatchet job, or a hypocrite.

Most voters, for now at least, seem more concerned about who will extract them from the current economic crisis, rather than any questions about political infighting in far-off Alaska, our correspondent adds."

Yeah, "enjoy" can be a relative term. I wasn't doing any serious research or anything--it just came to me. Literally. A friend forwarded the link in e-mail and I figured sifters might like it too.

To me, the sight of the pure desolation of the place illustrates what an empty argument it is--real, exaggerated or otherwise. I mean, it doesn't even matter if it's literally true--to me, anybody who presents that argument is beneath contempt and impossible to take seriously about anything. Except, yeah, F*ing VP candidate!</rant>

Well, I cannot really say I enjoyed this. I mean, the mere thought of Palin possibly becoming the vp is more than any reasonably thinking person could take, isn't it? But I had been wondering (having access to maps, unlike Ms Palin and Miss Teen South Carolina) what she would actually be able to see "from her home", but was too lazy to dig into it. So, thanks for doing my research for me. Are you from Alaska or did you just happen to come across this vid or did you seriously do some research?
