Mike Tyson Punches Man On Plane

Man confronts Superintendent about Bullying in Katy ISD publ

ChaosEngine says...

I had a pretty rough time in school. Plenty of people I would happily never see or speak to again.

But I don't think you should hold someone to account for dumb shit they did as a kid. Christ knows I did enough stupid shit in my youth. That doesn't mean you have to support them or even forgive them (at least not unless they make some effort to earn it), but I fail to see the point of dragging this up at a public meeting.

All that said, the superintendent's reaction is terrible here. If I was in the speakers position, having had the bravery to come forward and recount that experience, if my ex-bully had dismissed me like that, I'd have a very hard time not punching the motherfucker right there.

All he had to do was admit he was a stupid kid and apologise with a modicum of grace and humility. As it stands, I hope he loses his job because he's clearly a) an asshole and b) unfit.

Two thoughts:

1) Remembering something shameful or terrible can cause a person discomfort that they don't know how to deal with particularly well. They might go numb and blank. They might cry. Or, they might laugh -- which can seem incredibly inappropriate from an outside perspective.

2) Even if one were to give Lance the benefit of the doubt here with regard to part 1 there, a person in a position of authority (like a Superintendent) needs to follow up and try to make amends, along with showing some empathy and understanding that it is his job to try to prevent that kind of shit from happening NOW.

I guess it is possible that after the meeting, he went out and apologized and said that he regrets what he did when he was a young, stupid kid, and that that motivates him to work hard to prevent that kind of stuff now that he is in a position to do so. Possible, yes. Likely, no.

Robot Tries to Escape from Children's Abuse

newtboy says...

I think they should give it the ability to charge its skin with 100000volts as soon as it detects imminent abuse, like when it sees a child's fist or foot accelerating directly towards it. You stupid kids are going to create Skynet, and it's going to be pissed!

Best Greeter Ever - BAM!!!

Retroboy says...

That was not a bam.

That was a BAYAM.

Willie adds a consonant and a vowel just for being Willie. And the capitalization is well deserved by his extraspecial all right now.

We need more people like Willie, honestly.

(He also has intense knuckle scarring from stupid kids that punch the heck out of his hand.)

SiftDebate: What are the societal benefits to having guns? (Controversy Talk Post)

KnivesOut says...

I guess there's a benefit in teaching someone to use a tool that is capable of killing you. The respect and discipline involved is something of a life lesson, and can be extended to any number of potentially deadly things that we interact with more or less often.

When I was about 12, my dad and I went to a gun range in Florida for the first time, and he put his 1911 .45 in my hands, and showed me how to hold it, how to check if it was loaded, how to load it, and how to shoot it. He showed me how to respect the thing for the destructive life-taker that it is.

"Don't point a gun at anything you don't want to destroy" he said over and over again. I was terrified. I still enjoy shooting guns, even though I don't own any, and don't think I'll ever want one, but I can see the allure.

When you infuse an object with that level of emotional mass... it's like you can feel it in the room with you. The thing becomes more than a tool, it's a little gravity well of destructive power.

That's how I see them anyway. The people who are nonchalant about them scare me though. Stupid kids pointing guns at themselves in facebook cover photos. These people are the reason we can't have nice things.

Boy Tasered For Not Washing Cop's Car Sues -- TYT

PHJF says...

Of course. That's what makes something nationally relevant. It doesn't even have to affect me. It just needs to impact more than some kid in New Mexico or something (I already don't remember). I'm just saying this isn't national news. There isn't some national epidemic of cops brutalizing 10 year olds.

Some stupid kid going missing in Florida isn't national news either but every time it happens it's all over the news. Public servants employed by the government (that is, employed by you and me) abusing their positions in any capacity is relevant news. And excessive force is clearly endemic to American police as the countless examples constantly surfacing in various newspapers and the internet have shown. If it isn't some kid or grandmother being tazed somewhere it's some unarmed citizen being shot and killed for no legitimate reason.

Why Never to Make a 20 Pound Smoke Bomb

ulysses1904 says...

On the subject of stupid kids and fire, we were hanging out in the family room when I was a teen and I noticed the end of my lit cigarette got knocked off. I ignored it like a stoned idiot and we came back in the family room later to find the couch cushions smoldering. We dumped water on them and then my mom came home and smacked the crap outta us and made us put the cushions outside. Good thing she did, we woke up to find nothing but springs and wire outside instead of cushions.
