GET LAMP: The Text Adventure Documentary

StukaFox says...

So this is absolutely true:

When I was 14, I wrote the (as far as I can determine) first parser-driven BBS in the world, basically creating the first purpose-driven, "multi-player" online adventure game, with the following caveats:

- Unis had such games themselves, but their access was limited to other university students and not the general public.

- It's also possible that someone else might have done the same thing before me, but I have never found any record of a such a BBS or online game existing prior to 1981.

The name of the BBS was 'New House of Wrath' and it featured a house that you explored via simple verb-noun syntax. Each room in the house was a BBS function (various text games which I wrote myself / a message base / a philez repository / a graffiti wall) as well as a simple underlying adventure in the style of Zork. The whole thing was written in sloppy TRS-DOS BASIC on a TRS-80 Model III and resided within 48k of memory including a primitive DB engine that I wrote. I still have a 8-pin dot-maxtrix print out of the code.

Shortly after my BBS went "online", a couple of multi-line BBSs sprung up, but these were straight BBSs without an overlying structure like mine.

At the time, I thought nothing of writing the BBS other than it was a fun thing to do. 80 Micro, the magazine that covered all things TRS-related, was going to write a story about my BBS, but nothing ever came of it. I ran it until about 1986 when I finally gave up because everyone was going to online service like Compu$erve and Prodigy.

I know I'll never get a single bit of credit for what I did, but I know what I did and I'm proud of my little contribution to the online world; that'll have to be enough.

Historically first ever EF4 tornado in our country. The shock was such that basically everyone has new houses crowdfunded. 6 dead, not the people in the video.

Hidden Tool in an Outlet Few Know

BSR says...

I'm thinking that if you're an electrician installing these outlets in a new house it would be quicker not having to put down and pick up your wire strippers all the time unless of course you get paid by the hour.

Cavuto: How does it feel to be dismissed, CNN?

enoch says...

so let me get this straight.

neil cavuto,a pandering, whoremongering demagogue who represents all that is diseased and corrupt from FOX news.is glibly and childishly deriding CNN for now being in the very boat that FOX was for years.

that somehow the criticism and sly accusations of FOX being biased and slanted were not warranted.that the REAL focus should be on the reactions of the executive branch, and not on the content of cable news.

when we consider that even as late as 2010,33% of FOX viewers STILL thought that iraq had connections to al qeada, and that they were hiding WMD's.this alone is enough to condemn FOX as a rapacious propaganda machine.

i am not letting CNN off the hook.who have also been caught fabricating conflict based on questionable sources to formulate political crisis when there was none.

but that is not even something cavuto is addressing.he is literally beaming with a smug condescension in this piece,self-righteously admonishing an entire network as if those networks are not populated by individuals.

as if they of one mind.
one message.
and the message is:"poor CNN is no longer the favorite and now has to sit in the back of the bus like we did for 8 years".

do you know what this is?
and i am POSITIVE cavuto is totally unaware of this comparison.

this is the new house negro ridiculing the OLD house negro.
who were lovingly called "house niggers" *dedicated to @gorillaman*and "uncle tom's" back in the day.

so house negro neil cavuto is just gushing with pride that his new master prefers his network to that old rust bucket CNN.

the new pimp in chief likes his cable news to bow and prostrate itself upon his moist loins, and no other network can whore itself quite like FOX news.

so good for you mr neil cavuto!
you are the presidents new, favorite whore.
so pucker up you precious little slut, trump has something for you,and say goodbye to your last vestige of moral integrity.

now go be a good house negro and go make a trump a sandwich.

this is too delicious not to *promote

2016 Olympics: What Rio Doesn’t Want The World To See

00Scud00 says...

Probably because the wealthy just see them as being undeserving free riders. As it is I bet there was a lot of grumbling when the planners finally gave in and allowed those 20 families to stay where they were but felt they had to give them new houses or risk looking bad. Not to mention that shanty towns don't do much for property values.

They could have given all those less-fortunate, now evicted people so much money, and still made off like bandits themselves. I just don't understand the oppression and hate.

NOMAD Micro Home

Yogi says...

I've seen a lot of these prop up and they've always been interesting in a design sense. But I can't help but think that current houses with upkeep and renovations would be better for everyone. Of course building new houses isn't the way, but if you already have a house or can find one just living in a sustainable way could keep that house going for decades rather than building a new one.

Wallace Dresses Down Gillespie Over Romney's 20% Tax Cut

snoozedoctor says...

It would be nice if politicians had the real guts to tell you exactly what they plan to do. It's like hiring a landscaper for your new house and you asking, "what's the plan?" "Well, you know, make it pretty." "How are you going to do that?" "Well, you know, put some things here and there." Anyone who has worked with a landscaper would know the folly of that trust.

Zero Punctuation: Star Wars: The Old Republic

braindonut says...

I haven't done the smuggler story at all, but as a Sith Warrior, I can say the story was VERY engaging all the way up to level 40 something. They did a great job of continually ratcheting up the drama. If it weren't for the fact that I'm stupid busy dealing with moving into my new house and work, I'd be playing it right now.

I only have to run my sprinkler system about three months a year.

Holy frack! You have to use sprinklers on your lawn for a QUARTER OF THE YEAR and you think that's fine?
Do you people in the states have any concept of low impact? It truly is stunning... I mean, we here in Australia are pretty damn f cked up too, but we're trying...
What about fricken rainwater tanks? All new houses built in Australia require them now... and guess what? They give you heaps of water for watering any lawn you may want or your veggie patch or your fruit trees, or your small wheat crop.

Geesh, calm down. We actually have a shared rainwater tank here -- the groundwater that I already mentioned.

I calculated the electrical cost of running my sprinklers, and it came to 5 or 6 dollars a month. So yes, there's some carbon impact.

When I say 3 months a year, I don't mean 3 months of continuous operation, you realize? It's 2 and half hours every morning. In the Fall and Spring the grass doesn't need watering, and in the Winter it's under snow.

Anyway, if you want to yell at me for not being low impact, do so because I live 20 miles from work. I don't want to, but I don't have a choice.

Actually, I'm curious about your electrical consumption since you're shaming me for mine. I live in a state with one of the lowest per-capita carbon emission rates. I have aggressively programmed electronic thermostats and compact fluorescent lights. I run my air conditioner only about 30 days out of the year. I wonder if you're not actually living a higher impact lifestyle by trying to live in an arid area?
