Stoned Ape Theory

Sam Harris on the error of evenhandedness

SDGundamX says...

@hpqp
@marinara (because it indirectly addresses your post)

First, did you even read the book?

Second, quoting the Koran is not evidence--hard, empirical, data. You can quote-mine any religious text--including Buddhist sutras--for passages that can be interpreted out of context in quite a negative way. Where is the empirical data that shows all Muslims not only literally believe this but actively act on those beliefs? Hell, how many Muslims have you personally talked to and asked about those passages? I would consider that as "action-research" and be willing to hear the evidence you came up with.

Third, those links you posted are not evidence. They are reports of particular instances of violence whose causes are far more complex than simply "Islam made them do it." If Islam causes this kind of behavior, why aren't they stoning women in Malaysia, Tunisia, Algeria, Indonesia, or a host of other Muslim countries? How is it that the actions of a relatively few individuals within an enormous group can damn the entire group? How is it that Harris can ignore cultural, educational, and socio-economic factors involved in these incidents and claim with certainty that Islam is to blame when he doesn't seem to have any evidence to support his case?

The difference lies in the specific tenets of Islam.

Again, I ask you to show me the evidence of that. He can claim violence is caused by the specific tenets of Islam all he likes but I've never seen him show any empirical evidence that proves his point. And you know why? Because he can't. Such evidence doesn't exist. Sam Harris may be a brilliant scientist but he is a gobsmackingly awful anthropologist/historian/philosopher/theologian.

In conclusion, Sam Harris doesn't make good points at all. He spouts opinions unsupported by empirical data with a clear intent to espouse fear and hatred against one particular religious group. He is no better than a KKK member standing up there telling us how dangerous black people are and using pseudo-data like the number of black people currently in jail or anecdotal evidence of a white woman raped by a black man to prove his case. He lumps all members of a religious group (diverse in nationalities, ethnicity, cultures, socio-economic backgrounds, education, etc.) into one category and pretends they're all the same. His actions are detestable, all the more so because he is not some uneducated hick but a respected scientist who should know better than to claim things without having the evidence to back them up.

“Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able?
Then he is not omnipotent.

He is able..He could program everyone to never do evil, but then they would be robots.

Is he able, but not willing?
Then he is malevolent

He is willing to perfect you so that you don't do evil anymore, but that's entirely your choice.

Is he both able and willing?
Then whence cometh evil?

From mans disobedience

I wasn't indoctrinated either. I am the only Christian in my family. I became a Christian at a late age after being an agnostic my entire life. I used to think Bill Hicks was wise too..but it turns out everything he said about God was just ignorant, perhaps even deliberately so. He just didn't understand the bible very well.

God damn there's some huge ejaculations, semens almost cumming out of you lot. Who would have thought a queer blowing off some christians could have caused such an orgy of banging at the keyboard. It's a metaphorical desert of paragraph sized dunes for anyone following this thread so I'll let Epicurus keep it brief.

“Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able?
Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing?
Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing?
Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing?
Then why call him God?”

Epicurus – Greek philosopher, BC 341-270

LOL It's like the argument for an all loving, omnipotent god was destroyed before Jesus was even born.

Note: This isn't why I'm not religious. I don't believe because I wasn't indoctrinated as a small child. That and the booze and drugs are still working for me da dum Ching1

Now before you, dear reader, set of oncemore into the desert of hopelessly convoluted diatribes, fill your camelskin bladders at the endlessly refreshing oasis of Bill Hicks, I believe named that after the comedian though I can't be sure of the chronology.

"The whole image is that eternal suffering awaits anyone who questions God's infinite love. That's the message we're brought up with, isn't it? Believe or die! Thank you, forgiving Lord, for all those options."

WTF?!?! Who the hell is training and passing these idiots at the academy???
So he fires 4 shots on a man carving a piece of wood. That alone is stupid enough. He was not threatening anyone, at most, 1 single shot in a leg or something would have been more than enough.
Then, he just stands there like a stupid moron, waiting for the guy to bleed out. Then his even stupider pals arrive, and 11 in total form a line to safely approach a man shot 4 times, lying in the ground, with a knife who wasn't even moving or speaking??
This is disgusting beyond words. That piece of shit should spend the rest of his life behind bars, and those 10 idiots who arrived later should get a slap on the wrist as well.

I thought the homeless guy was gonna be ninja flipping up and stabbing them with his knife, then like have a load of hidden throwing knives and nail them all in their foreheads, then smokebomb and disappear.

....back to reality, some hick police officer murders someone posing no threat, gets away with it, then his dumb buddies show up and act retarded. Fuck the police.

Somebody pointed out something to me the other day. Actually it was on satellite radio, but what they said offended me at first, then I thought about it. What they said was that Bill Hicks really isn't that funny. When you think about it, he's not. The things he says are, no doubt, true, prophetic, philosophical, etc. but none of it is really "funny".

I think Stanhope is funnier than Bill Hicks. Stanhope doesn't put himself above crass humor, but he usually does it with purpose.>> ^shagen454:

I like this guy a lot. In my opinion, Bill Hicks was sort of what we now call a "hipster". They didn't use such foul language back then. Back then Bill Hicks was just an abrasive weirdo. I definitely don't like Stanhope as much as Hicks but he is sort of pandering to that style of comedy for this generation and I'm glad for that. I love any comedian that talks up drugs and calls this generation a bunch of pussies. I know you know that rottenseed cuz I just checked and you posted that specific clip, haha funny shit! And then the full video is on the sift but my favorite part of it is this segment that rottenseed posted:

I would not classify him bill hicks or gorge Carlin as a comedian , sometimes they do say stuff for comedic effect , maby 3% of the time ( unless its a specific routine ) but most the time what they do is just say the truth and I don't just mean in an ironic comedic way , or in a clever with language , or clever poetic way. they littoraly just say how things are.

I wouldn't Evan classify it as DRY comedy or humor because its not really evan that.

I don't think its a bad thing though you would hope that there were more people that existed and picked out the bullshit and clearly communicated it to others, I just think the label comedian dose not do them justice.

Another Earth - Haunting 2011 Trailer

poolcleaner says...

I had a dream about this movie once...

Oceanic Flight 815, en route to Earth 2, crash lands on a desert planet infested with giant sand worms and zombies. In an attempt to get home, the survivors encounter Jeffrey Sinclair on board a space station caught in a time rift, who reveals that he has been chasing Q who is commanding an army of half-Scarran, half-Sylons with Goa'uld symbiotes to conquer a magical island in Neverland. And the only one who can save the universe is Jim Raynor, captain of a stolen Firefly, and his life partner, a half Wookie, half Time Lord who has sworn a life debt to the captain. They have a depressed robot sex slave who isn't attracted to them and each of them owns a power ring, bestowed to them by the Guardians of the Universe (who are all dwarves, except for one of them who is Tom Waits).

You don't even want to know who the crew of the Firefly is. It will blow your fucking mind. Ok, I'll tell you: Napoleon, Socrates, Sigmund Fruuud, Billy the Kid, Genghis Kahn, and Ludwig Van; then for some reason Whoopie Goldberg is there with William Shatner, Patrick Stewart, and Malcolm McDowell, who can't stop pining over Beethoven. At the end of the movie, the crew is clean cut, the robots are all shiny, and the ghosts of Bill Hicks, Rufus, Obi-wan, Pizza the Hut, Dr. Frankenfurter, and Alf are all sitting around waiting for you to wake up -- but, when you wake up -- you're Homer Simpson! OMG don't tell ANYONE about the twist ending or the sequel where he meets Hank Hill who gets abducted by aliens and meets spooky Fox Mulder and that sexy redhead Leeloo.

My mind is exploding! There may be another me who isn't as awesome as the real me and enjoyed the movie The Notebook... Pshhhhhh -- Frell the frack off. Every alternate reality of me smokes pot and makes or plays video games. Stop trying to change me, universe!
