Indiana Jones & Pascal's Wager: Crash Course Philosophy #15

MilkmanDan says...

Somewhat disappointed that he didn't include my personal favorite argument against Pascal's Wager: conflicting faiths.

Instead of a 4-cell chart (2x2 from believe/don't believe and god exists/doesn't), the chart should arguably be a LOT bigger. Plenty of individual branches of Christianity will tell you that *their* specific brand is the only one that will get you into heaven. And that's just relatively minor distinctions -- different sorts of Protestants, or Protestants vs Catholics, etc. We haven't even got to Christianity vs Judaism vs Islam -- all of which fall under the "Abrahamic" umbrella -- but very few Christian faiths think that Jews or Muslims are just as eligible to enter heaven as they are (or vice-versa). From there you can get to things as disparate as Hindu vs Ancient Egyptian vs Zoroastrianism, and everything else.

With that sort of chart, it is just as easy to say that choosing to believe in the *wrong* god could possibly be associated with a more negative outcome than washing your hands of it and going Atheist. Maybe I chose to believe in Ra the Sun God when Zeus ends up being the one true deity. Come to find that Zeus, as it turns out, tolerates people who don't believe in him as long as they don't believe in one of his competitors (like Ra). Therefore I get a lightning bolt to the keyster and a trip to Hades while my nonbeliever buddy gets a ticket to Elysium.

Of course it's all a load of bollocks, but if your argument is a load of bollocks (like Pascal's wager) you don't get to complain when somebody flips it on its head and uses it to argue the exact opposite...

No, no, no, God wasn't there because of that, he was just busy playing hide and seek with his pals Elohim, Allah, Krishna, Zeus, Thor, Hachiman, Shangdi, Odin, Jupiter, Aganju, Make-make, Ra, Arceus, Dirawong, Alban, Nergal, Hades, Oya, R'hllor, Dyausa, Tenjin, Anubis, Freyja, Magec, Huitzilopochtli, Crom, Marduk, Azathoth, Cthulhu, Ranginui, Eru Ilúvatar, Arnapkapfaaluk and The Flying Spagetti Monster... to name a few.

The whole thing is filled with speculation and arguments from incredulity. There is no hard evidence that scripture doesn't mean what it says..there is absolutely no doubt there will be eternal separaration from God because of sins..and very little doubt that it will be eternal conscious torment. Some people think it is destruction and not torment, but after looking at the evidence I have decided there is far more basis to say it is the other way around.

It comes to a similar conclusion as this bishop in the video that the idea of hell as a burning lake isn't supported by scripture.

Yes, I've seen all of this before..it is unconvincing. As soon as you start twisting scripture to support your conclusion, you've ceased being interested in the truth.

Revelation 20:10

and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

Aye I think you're right if you take things even further back and look at the old testament. From my (relatively little) study of the old testament hell refers more to a grave, or blackness, and not a fiery pit. I decided to use the words I did because most teaching these days is based on the simplistic fact that hell is indeed a fiery pit, and 'that's where you go if you're bad'. It's a twisting/mistranslation of the old testament's words, and a variety of words that meant different things (such as Hades, grave etc) were often lumped together in the translation as just "hell". So it seems that even if the bible does refer to this place I mention, it wasn't necessarily the original intention of the authors of the scripture that formed the bible for it to be described this way.

"to those" refers to children, who cannot yet discern right from wrong. A classic example (I think) of what this kind of indoctrination does is provided in the Amish documentary that is here on the sift.

They argue the how's why's and wherefore's of community protocol, mostly centered around how literally the religious teachings should be followed. It's clear to see that it never even crosses their mind that perhaps there isn't even a god. God is all they've ever known since childhood so any other possibility would be meaningless to them.

@hpqp good info, cheers

@hpqp
Perhaps I read to many poems in high school, but every one of these, to me, seem to be analogous to being killed in spirit.

Mt. 10:28: "...destroy both soul and body..."
Mt. 25:41: "...into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels..."
Mt. 25:46: "...eternal punishment..."
Mk 9:47-48: "..thrown into hell, 48 where “‘the worms that eat them do not die, and the fire is not quenched."
Lk 10:15: "...will go down to Hades"
Lk. 12:5: "has authority to throw you into hell"

The only one that seems to really indicated being not destroyed seems to be Mk 9:47-48. Eternal punishment could be eternal non-existence, and going to hell or Hades could mean the same thing. Unquenchable fire seems to speak more about the fire, not those being eradicated by it. Fire seems to be what most people see as the "hell" part, the part about eternal torment in the form of torture instead of destruction. For me, the idea of fire is that it consumes things. Once consumed, the thing is gone, and so is the fire. So, is the bible saying the fire doesn't go out but is always ready to consumed the next evil doer, or the fire isn't going out because the source isn't consumed? Really, I don't know, don't care anymore I guess..."hell" seems to violate God's own decree of love, a fairly large theological problem, more than just being destroyed.

Most likely it is me that is wrong about hell, no matter, I don't think it a real thing. Even though, sometimes, when I see all the injustice in the world, like all those assholes in the video, I wish there was a place after death where justice was done. If your an atheist, then the life itself is truly an unjust thing.

Edit, o ya, and thanks for taking the time to research a very great reply

World condemns Gaza flotilla raid - Russia Today

Winstonfield_Pennypacker says...

The sponsors of this so-called 'aid flotilla' freely admit the whole thing was a political effort designed to provoke a response. They may not have expected the severity of the Isreali response. But after having viewed the videos, it must be said that they had it coming. When you are brandishing knives and charging at soliders you have no right to whine when you get shot at.

The 'aid convoy' was filled with bunches of known militants and other activists with histories of anti-Isreali sentiment. And many of them were armed. They KNEW they were going to be boarded. They also refused several offers to deliver their so-called 'humanitarian aid' at a port to be trucked to the supposed destination. They deliberately refused any offer of a solution that would have resulted in a safe outcome.

This outcome was more than likely. It went down as designed, and somewhere there are a bunch of these smug bastards who are secretly GLAD their own people were killed so as to generate a strongly negative story and get more PR. There's a special circle of Hades reserved for sleazeballs that sponsored the flotilla. The blood is on their hands as much or more than on Isreal's.

Greece riots: 100,000

quantumushroom says...

obamarx is doing the same thing that sank Greece here in America: expanding government with no way to pay for it (not that Bush was much better with the first round of failouts and medicare D).

The EU is encouraging more of the same with their handouts. November's elections will indicate if America will follow Greece into financial Hades.

Government is the great fiction, through which everybody endeavors to live at the expense of everybody else. -
